Titleist AVX- is it just me....

It is very much a niche ball. Plus, it is up against the new Pro V1 balls which get the publicity since they are their marquis balls.

Zero tour use right? Seems if you were fitted properly for your drive the ball is irrelevant. I predict they will discontinue it in a year or two.

I've found two and played quite well with both. It's a soft ball that didn't fair well on that recent golf test we've all seen, but I can annilate that ball off of my driver. It's noticeably lower flying over other balls that I use, but it's got a piercing ball flight. Good ball IMHO.

Not about whether or not it’s a good ball, or who it fits. Why has Titleist stopped promoting it?

As for tour use, the Tour Soft doesn’t get any either, but I saw commercials for it this past weekend.

I thought I'd read somewhere that the AVX was kinda sorta a "stop gap" in the middle of the 2 year cycle for changing the ProV1 and ProV1X.

Stop gap as in it was the new ProV1 in disguise and now that the ProV1 is out, the AVX might be discontinued at the end of this year.

AFAIK, just rumor/theory. Not sure if there's any truth to it but the new ProV1 is VERY similar to the AVX,,,,,,,, so no need for 2 of 'em.

Again, no idea whether any of this is true.

The new pro V1 is not anything like the AVX. It spins way more on all clubs, launches higher, and is firmer. There is a big difference.

Before the deadline for the 4 for price of 3 order last month I tested the ProV1 for multiple rounds and chipping and putting sessions. Not the most thorough test I've ever done for a ball but for those 3 or 4 rounds and the practicing I found little difference.

I've found the AVX about 1/2 club longer than my previous Chrome Soft. The ProV1 seemed a little closer to the AVX than the CS but because I'd been used to playing the AVX over about 8 months or so I bought the AVX. Personally I hope the AVX stays in the lineup.

Just one person's observations.

The new prov1 is much lower spin than before but around the green and in mid to short irons it honestly has at least 20% more spin.

On driver it’s more spin too, but trajectory and ability to work were very different.

That said, I can’t tell you how it works for you. But all the data driven testing would say they are completely different balls in completely different performance categories.

Edit... After further rounds with AVX, I found it to be long and spins nicely into greens. I like it.

Well, I just tried to google some data driven testing but it became too hard to sort out quickly. 20% more spin over the AVX sounds like a lot though. A 6,000 RPM (whatever) iron ProV1 strike would only spin 4800 for the AVX ? Doesn't sound quite right.

I've always hit a higher iron than most of the similar 'cap players I've played with over the years and I can't say I see much difference with the AVX so the slightly(?) lower flight of the AVX off irons suits me just fine. More importantly, to me anyway, is that a well struck iron hits and sticks, or releases a short distance, say 3-6 feet or so. The AVX fits that profile for me.

I will admit that the additional roll out on chips was something I had to get used to but after a short adjustment time it's fine.

I'm also not a big "worker" of the ball. I play straight to a slight draw normally. I almost never try to hit a cut. And as for the flight off the driver I find if I tee it low it goes low and if I tee it high it flies plenty high. Go figure. LOL

So, net-net, the ball fits my game rather well. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

As far as data, that is about right, though 20% could be a slightly high estimate. But it is >10% in every test I have seen for certain. I added some links below. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying its a bad ball. I actually love the AVX and played it all last year, but It didn't spin inside of 20 yards like I wanted, and the 5-8 irons lacked the spin I prefer. I loved it off the driver, the low spin and trajectory made it really long for me and it is very easy to hit straight. The launch characteristics off the driver made up for the loss of ballspeed due to the low compression against my 115ss. There is no doubt it is a very long ball, and it spins much better than most very long balls in its category, but it doesn't have the iron and greenside spin of the balls being played on tour. (Which is why no PGA player is using the AVX)

With all this said, I whole heartedly believe this ball is the best overall ball falling between bonefide tour balls and the low-spinning Tour Soft type offerings.

I fast forwarded through much of Shiels' test but by him saying that all 3 balls felt identical off the putter he started losing my attention pretty quickly. I'll grant that the AVX and ProV1 feel very close the V1X is definitely clickier and firmer feeling off the putter.

Looking at his results, of course there won't be 20% difference off the driver. There was 20% difference off the 7 iron but from 100 yards, whichever club he was using, the AVX and V1X were virtually identical. I found that interesting.

Anywho, Shiels' video more or less confirmed what I remembered hearing about the AVX and what I've experienced over the last 8 months or so and the ball just flat out works for me. Lower flight and spin off the driver gives me more carry and roll out and the short irons hit and (mostly) stop. If I "suffer" a slight bit off the 7 iron due to the lower spin, oh well, what're ya gonna do. ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the videos.

Any honest review I would try to do of golf ball would start with "felt the same off the putter", at least in the vast majority of cases. A few of the super, super soft 2pc balls (Supersoft in particular) make a noticeably quieter sound on long putts but for something like comparing an AVX to a Pro V1 or Callaway or Bridgestone urethane ball, darned if I can hear any difference at all with the putter. Maybe driver, not putter.

Don't know if this is the same video I'm thinking of but in one of them Shiels used a shot tracer to show that the driver trajectory of Pro V1x, Pro V1 and AVX was High, Medium, Low exactly like the pictures in Titleist's marketing literature. That was pretty cool because it was actual (outdoor) ball flight, not simulator numbers.

I think ones opinion of AVX is in direct proportion to how one feels about having about 1,000rpm less spin off mid and short irons. The guys in my club who've tried it and who need/want every bit of spin they can get don't like it. Even if they gain distance. And the guys who suffer from excess spin (big hitters mostly) love it, even though they don't necessarily need the extra distance.

Stuff like the driver ball flight and "feel" matter to some people but it's the iron-shot spin that's make or break. Titleist did a pretty amazing job in my opinion of making something as close as possible to "Tour" ball performance while lowering the flight and cutting out a lot of iron-shot spin. Kind of a unique offering, in a market crowded by Pro V1/Pro V1x clones.

While I would agree that most balls feel very similar off the putter, to ME, there is a very clear difference between the feel of the V1x and the other 2. If you gave me the 3 balls blind and had me putt with each of them I could definitely pick out the V1X out of the 3. Could probably tell the V1x as soon as I hit it without hitting the other 2. The V1 vs. the AVX, likely not.

There are also some balls out there that when I putt with them actually seem to have more "dwell" time on the face. For a long time now I have focused on accelerating through the ball. Decel is death.

To that end my stroke accelerates through and continues on (roughly) in a ratio of 1:2, backswing to through swing, maybe a tad more on the through swing. And I have actually double hit shorter putts with certain balls. I think the Volvik (not sure which one) was one of those and recently with one of the Bridgestone premium offerings.

Doesn't happen all the time even with one of those balls but even when it doesn't happen those balls seem way "too" soft off the putter, "mushy" if you like,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and if I *think* I may double hit it, guess what ? No dice for me.

No problem on the links. Like I said, it really depends on what you value in your game. The AVX is a really good offering especially if you need a little extra distance in the middle of the bag and aren't reliant on spin specifically around the green. It is a really great ball that isn't quite a tour ball, but is certainly better short game spin than the non-urethane and other entry level urethane balls around.

I loved it last season, but found the Tour BX to give me that extra spin on partial wedges I missed, and I didn't really need the extra 1/2 club bump on 5-8/9 irons, so I moved on. But, I feel the AVX has a nice slot in the Titleist line and sales have been great; I don't see it going anywhere.

An out-of-state friend of mine (who unfortunately I haven't seen lately) has this thing he does putting that makes me avert my eyes. If he's within 6-8 feet of the hole, he hits the putt and then I guess because he wants it to go in so bad he like pulls the club back a split second after impact. Like the putter touched something too hot and it burned him. The first few times he did it I sort of smiled because it was funny but after a while I was like, "I do NOT need that image in my mind next time I'm trying to make a 6-footer".

The AVX and the 2017 Pro V1 were vastly different in terms of spin, most notably around the green for me. The AVX did not bite like the Pro V1.

For reference, I am a high spin player. I tried the AVX when it came out and saw distance gains from Driver to 7 iron which I enjoyed. Once the honeymoon period wore off, I noticed I could not control the scoring clubs (8-Lob wedge). They would travel too far at times, not react around the greens consistently, and was not able to control the flight as well. Most likely due to less spin than I am used to.

I played 9 holes hitting both the AVX and the 2019 Pro V1 and saw that off the driver they traveled similar distances. The AVX was a much flatter flight, but I actually got more carry from the Pro V1 and they rolled to almost the exact distances each time when struck well. IMO, the 2019 Pro V1 has some of the long club benefits of the AVX (less spin) while still maintaining the control around the greens.

Don't get me wrong, the AVX is a great ball, but I definitely sacrificed control around the greens when using it.

I use the AVX and it suits me well. My opinion on the AVX vs ProV quandary is that if you have a high swing speed the AVX could be useless. I don't have a high swing speed, and with the AVX I can really launch some deep drives and control my irons much better.
