All of the other resorts that I mentioned are rated at that level. Not to mention the probably 100 other properties in the country. The food at Pinehurst was great 10 years ago, I was back last year and ate off property every night and had better meals. Like I said I am nit picking. However, the Carolina is dated, it is to some extent intentional, however, you go to the Greenbrier and it looks like it is from 1900 but was redone 5 years ago.

> IMO the Carolina Hotel and especially the Holly Inn are as nice if nicer than the Sanctuary at Kiawah. Haven’t stayed at the others you have mentioned but have stayed at many other top non gold resorts. Most people that visit Pinehurst stay in condos and not one of the hotels. Dinner at the Holly is first class (technically 4 star) and breakfast at the Carolinia is unreal.

I like the dated vibe in a resort, but not in the room itself. Carolinas rooms felt dated and not up to the standard of others mentioned. The friendliness and hospitality and overall historic feel are cool and the food is really good. I did however like the Sanctuary better. Just my preference.

Pinehurst is great for golf, but there's sweet FA else to do there, really.

Disney World / EPCOT is a great choice, with plenty of non-golf stuff and some excellent golf in the area (and I really don't think there's a need to stick only with Disney properties for golf).

Palm Springs: JW Marriott and the associated timeshares are great places to stay, with lots of resort amenities onsite. Again, you'd want to go offsite for golf.

Have not been to Pebble Beach / Monterey. My sense is that it's Nirvana for golf, superb for spa and scenery, kind of meh for other activities.

Aren't there some great resort properties in Cabo? Seems like a pretty good choice to me.

"Resort" strikes me as a term that could mean different things to different people. If one insists that everything one does is on-Property, that limits the universe a lot more than if one is willing to travel outside for one or more activities. Honestly, the best resort and golf experience I ever had probably was at the Iberostar Grand in Punta Cana DR, even though onsite golf was just okay - was able to go offsite to La Romana (Teeth of the Dog) and Punta Espada for outstanding golf, and then come back for superb food and drink onsite. Wifey was plenty happy with the beach, booze and cuisine.

1. Bandon (Heaven on Earth for Golfers). Unlike other resorts, they don't gouge you for food (Yes Kiawah, talking to you)

2. Whistling Straits. (downside is you are not staying on property but great golf)

3. Sea Island (full confession have not played here, just toured the facilities and looked at 2 of the 3 courses, seems to have everything)

4. Kiawah, One great course, 4 courses that are impeccably maintained, but not worth traveling to. I could see retiring there and playing there weekly, but not worth the cross country tip.

5. PGA West, The Stadium Course does not measure up to Ocean Course, but the other courses are better than Kiawah's other courses.

This is true. While the golf at Sand Valley is superb, I wouldn't call it a resort. There is absolutely nothing else to do other than play golf. But it appears that this thread is defining "resort" quite liberally. And that's OK.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Greenbrier. It has five courses and is a classy resort that has so many activities and amenities, including a casino, nice restaurants, tennis, swimming, bowling, biking, off road vehicles, and much more. In the south only Pinehurst tops it IMO.

There aren't many resorts in the Northeast with three or more courses, but Turning stone has three decent courses, a casino and more.

As far as ranking the ones originally mentioned, I like Fairway Fred's list. From a golfers perspective (i.e. don't care about anything except the courses) Bandon has to be #1

My wife and I love traveling to Resort Golf destinations and so far we think the Hualalai Resort Four Seasons is our favorite and we highly recommend it. The course is scenic cutting thru lava and alongside the ocean as well as the relaxing view from the rooms, and in the winter months you can see the whales breaching from your room! I cant remember but I think there are like 5 different pool areas, and many other courses around the area.

Also looking forward to the new Mauna Lani hotel being renovated right now a few miles from Hualalai.

That's because when anyone mentions the Greenbrier people immediately think falconry; not golf.

Plenty to do, I have had a lake home five minutes away from sand valley for 20 years and I have found plenty to do in the area long before sand valley was there.

I'm referring to typical resort activities. There are none at SV other than golf.

I think SV has some nice (grass) tennis courts.

Forgot about the Greenbrier. But you're absolutely right about it. Good stuff.

I'm a little shocked at how low folks have pebble in their lists. I'm only going to vote on the places i've been

For me it's

1. Pebble and it's not even close

2. Pinehurst, quaint town makes for an enjoyable getaway

3. Streamsong - "resort" mmm wouldn't go that far but the golf is great

4. Kiawah I haven't played the river or cassique but wasn't very impressed with the golf outside of the Ocean course

River and Cassique would be numbers 2 and 3 on the list. However, they are private. They are terribly hard to get on to though.

I've heard you actually have to own property to be a member at them?

I think that is correct. You have to own property on the island. I was able to get on pretty much free at will when I worked on Kiawah Island at both Turtle and Ocean. Not 100% if they are that hard to get onto in you belong to another private course somewhere. I have not tried since I stopped working in the golf business.

We went to Big Cedar Lodge for a bit a year plus ago. Golf courses associated are really good and getting better it looks like. Though if you don't do the double play rate (Buffalo/Par 3) I would say the PAR 3 is way over priced solo IMHO. If your taking a family there is a lot to do outside the resort in Branson. Table Rock Lake is very nice. The resort has some fun things to do on site also.

Melbourne is our list to see but for the great golf also in the area. _Edit: PLUS do a quick jump over to King Island / Tas for the great golf there too ...!!!_
