New Bunker Unplayable Options

Recommended Posts

I'm 99% certain here...but looking for confirmation.

Imagine a scenario where you're 10 yards off the green with a deep pot bunker between you and the putting surface. Call it a Par 4, so you're hitting your third shot.

You loft up a gentle pitch shot that doesn't quite get there, and it settles in a fried egg at the bottom of the bunker. Your options are...:

(1) Hit #4 out of the bottom of the bunker.

(2) Take back-on-the-line relief INSIDE the bunker for one penalty stroke. Hitting 5 from the bunker. (Rule 19.3a)

(3) Take back-on-the-line relief OUTSIDE the bunker for TWO penalty strokes. Hitting 6 from outside the bunker. (Rule 19.3b)

(4) Replay the original gentle pitch shot from the same place. Hitting 5 from outside the bunker (Rule 18.1)

In this case (which is admittedly an edge case) the new rule (19.3b) doesn't do anything material for you that you couldn't previously do under 18.1 (you do get some additional flexibility on the place that you hit from, but also pay an additional stroke). Am I missing anything?

Yes. 19.3b means that if you don't get out first time or don't think you will be able to, you don't have to spend the rest of your life trying to get out.

Interesting. I hadn't considered that problem in a stroke play environment - you go into the bunker, you take a hack at it unsuccessfully, and then lose the option to replay from outside the bunker.

In fact, (4) would be through Rule 19.2a if the player decided the ball was unplayable.

To be clear, that was last year. Now you don't lose the option.

Even if the player decided the ball was unplayable he could still use R18.1. In fact ;-)

I agree that if you are 10 yds off with **nothing in the way**, option (3) doesn't do anything for you. But what if you had failed because an overhanding branch was in the way? Now option (4) is, well, an option.

What if in the first place you had hit the ball into a bunker from 200 yards out?

Allow me to unspin your head - attachments aren't working with latest forum update, so here's the link to it:

All rules are complicated if you just randomly read a few snippets. When you read them all and digest them, it's an almost alchemical how they get a lot easier to understand.

Same way with computer programming. Once you get a good grasp on the concepts you can learn pretty much anything else, except that demon known as Java, pretty quickly.
