I was embarrassed to be at Bethpage...

I wanted to see if anyone here attended yesterday's first round , and if so what their thoughts were on the fans? I don't write very many posts on GolfWRX, but I have to say that attending Bethpage yesterday was pretty nauseating to say the least. I'm sure there will be people who throw around words like Snowflake, etc when they read this, but the etiquette or lack there of I witnessed yesterday was deplorable; and it was all under the heading of "Hey, I'm from NY". As someone who grew up on Long Island, I was embarrassed. I stood next to the tee-box on 7 watching Phil, Rory and Kisner come through and wanted to vomit at the stuff that was coming out of some of these people's mouths; and could only imagine what the players were thinking. Then Phil hit the restroom after he teed off, only to return to very specific and graphic questions about what he was doing in there.....there were some other choice remark as well thrown Rory's way.

That being said, I think I'm venting more on the fact that this has become "acceptable" ... I guess it's just worse in NY because people think that being from NY they just have an excuse to be A--H---e. I was going to take my 5 year old to the tournament yesterday, but I though it would be to long a day for him . I'm glad I made that decision, as I'm not quite sure what I would have said to him at that point when he said, Daddy, why are they yelling those things at them? ...Maybe I just witnessed the worst fans of the week on that particular tee box, but something tell me I'm being being to optimistic.

I just happen to see the Billy Horshell Incident last week on twitter, and I guess that's what also prompted me to write this. I was in 100% agreement with Billy and his reaction. Reading comments from people om twitter who genuinely believe they have the right to act, say and do anything they want is total Bull---t. Get some manners people...and If you can't control your self when having a few beers, then don't drink. I'm all for cheering, and a little heckling, but there's a line ....and if you don't know where that line is then stay home.

Was going to write something about social media (and the media at large, really) emboldening people to overstep socially acceptable norms in the quest for their 15 minutes of viral fame but I don't really want to go down that rabbit hole. Instead, I'll chime in with a freezing cold take... New Yorkers are a--h----!

Sadly, it's become commonplace at all sporting events, even outside Nooo Yawk! I believe it's equal parts liquid courage, mob mentality, entitlement, stupidity and attention seeking behavior. As long as sporting events continue to be sponsored by Budweiser and rake in huge revenue, it isn't likely to stop anytime soon.

I went yesterday, first time to a golf tourney.

I got there at 6:30am, watched TW putt and at the range. It was quiet, all good, then I bolted all the way over to the 9th to see him tee off. When I got there, there was a pretty good sized crowd, very quiet as there were was a group teeing of near the tee box. When TW showed up, there was a cheer, few "go Tiger's" and then TW went to used the head and this guy yells, "If you shake more than 3 times...". That was it, Honestly, wasn't that offensive.

Then, I followed TW for a few holes, crowds were very quiet, no bababooeys or get in the holes.

Maybe it's because it was early but I whether it was on the tee, the fairway, or the green, there was nothing in the way of obnoxious behavior.

It got very crowded around the group so I jumped ahead a few holes to Rickies group, hit spots near the green, fairway, tee boxes, and the crowd was totally normal. Lot of people who knew each other, just talking about the golf.

I was getting tired so I camped out on this hill near the 2nd green and waited for Phils group to come in. The people on the hill were older, just very chill and respectful, was pretty relaxing spot to watch.

NYC loves phil so you had all the bababooeys come through with his group, that must have been what you saw. Phil's gallery was actually bigger than TW from what I saw and it was pretty rowdy.

I learned that if you go to an event, you have the option to either get in the mix of the insanity or if you want a more laid back experience, you can find good spots where the more "quiet" fans hang out.

@Pauly567 I wasn't there, but I share your thoughts. I attended the Ryder Cup in 2016, and while I understand it's supposed to be a bit boisterous there was a lot of disgusting behavior there as well. I was close by on the one hole where the american fan told Rory to suck his d**k walking between holes and Rory nearly went after him. I was certainly glad I didn't have my children with me that day, and felt bad for the ones that were there with their kids. I could make a pretty long list of the things I heard yelled that day that I wouldn't have wanted my kids to hear, and likely ask me what it means.

True story. The one and only time Ebrasmus went to NYC I had a cabbie yell at me and call me a J-Off.

NYC, baby.

Today's society, anything goes, sad really

I will say, in general, during my trips and stays all over the Southern USA the biggest and most annoying personalities/people to deal with are indeed from NYC. To the point the Americans with me mock them. A self fulfilling stereotype, all under the belief that because they are from NYC they can be as loud and obnoxious as they want, no matter how minor the location or situation, mind numbing

I wish I carried nunchucks, not the golf shaft and not Chuck Norris

Well the Horschel incident did not take place in NY, rather in another place 1000 miles away, so what that has to do with this I don't know. And I noticed that English golfer Eddie Pepperell actually tweeted that the fan should have been kneed to the face, which seems a lot more egregious than a rude comment. But I guess this is where we're at. Promoting violence is okay in response to a dumb comment.

I was yelled at in Coney Island for ordering a sandwich wrong.

But then again, that happened in Philly too.

I guess I just suck at ordering sandwiches.

Hey, it's New York! What did you expect?

Throw in the "Tiger Effect" and you can multiply the asholiness X 10.

I don't remember whose program it was now, think it was Hank Haney's spot, but there was quite a bit of discussion last week about how rowdy/unruly the fans most likely would be at Bethpage simply because the vast majority would New Yorkers. Sounds like that discussion was spot on. Personally, I find it embarrassing when I witness such behavior. I guess my upbringing shows. I was told never to be an embarrassment or bring any kind of embarrassment to my family. The words were also...you know will know you will witness you doing it and will know who you are and who your family is.

Please don't judge the entire state of NY by the actions of those from NYC & surrounding area. That's a very small part of the state. Unfortunately people think that the entire population of NY acts like those from the city. The reality is that we don't.

If more knees hit faces. A lot less rude comments would fly for no reason. Now it may take 30 years to have it take a societal hold. But it took that long for it to become “ normal “ as well.
