Portugal Trip

My wife and I are going to Portugal in August with her family. We'll be staying down at the south end between Lagos and Faro.

 

Any suggestions for good courses there that we should look at?

I have only played one course at the Algarve and it was a recommendation from a well traveled wrx'er. It was at the resort Monte Rei. Bit of a hike from where you will be (closer to Spain), but not knowing if there are better options closer IMO it is worth the drive if you have the time. Great course and fun.

We had a group of 12 golfers there last May. Here are the courses we played on the southern coast. Our favorite was Monte Rei (great conditions, a wide variety of holes, lots of strategies needed, great service). Our least favorite was the Oceanico Faldo course (a VERY slow round and we spent a lot of time on every tee trying to determine how to play the hole) ;

I’ve just got back from playing in Portugal, we stayed in Vilamoura and played the Dom Pedro courses, Laguna, Millennium, Pinhal and Old Course. We all thought Pinhal and the Old Course were far better than the other 2. Both tight and tree lined but balls could be found easily when hit in the trees and chipped back into play. We wanted to play the Royal Course at Vale Do Lobo, the one with the famous par 3 that you hit over the cliff top but it was closed for maintenance.

@kozubs : Monte Rei is a masterpiece and remains my favorite course in Continental Europe. San Lorenzo is a really good course I would also strongly recommand too, like South and Laranjal courses in Quinta do Lago.

Monte Rei is absolutely first class.

San Lorenzo is a classic and the Old Course is awesome once you get past the terrible first hole.

If you don't want to travel east, Palamares is a beauty.

August is hot and rounds on the big resorts like Vilamoura can be slow.

Hi @kozubs, Monte Rei, as everyone mentioned is one of the finest and exclusive courses in Portugal . Closer to Faro you also have Quinta do Lago (North, South and Laranjal ), I would recommend the South course and Laranjal. San Lorenzo course is part of the resort and it’s a beauty. Close by you have Vale do Lobo ( Royal and Ocean)

The mentioned options is Vilamoura ( Old Course and Pinhal) are great. You have as well Vila Sol, but Vilamoura in August is crowded. Closer to Lagos I would recommend Penina, the oldest in the Algarve and very good course, and Palmares a recently renovated course with great views along the beach. There is also Espiche and Morgado do Reguengo (where our Open is played).
