Sand Valley + Erin Hills + Straits

LBRMGR

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have an ideal itinerary for this "perfect" Wisco trip? I've done EH + Kohler, so wanted to try and get in SV + EH + Straits. Was thinking if this was possible:

Fly in Thursday AM as early as possible to Milwaukee/Minneapolis? Drive to Sand Valley

Play 19 on Thursday PM + Short Course

36 Friday at SV, drive to Erin Hills

Stay at Erin Hills Friday Night and Saturday Night, play EH Saturday AM

Straits Sunday AM, fly back Sunday afternoon

This all conditional upon time of the year of course. If you don't stay at Kohler, is it difficult to get an advanced tee time at Straits? I know cost is prohibitive but just curious...

Any other ideas to try and get in all 3 places over a Thurs-Sun weekend?

Thanks!

Depends on your flights but if you have done Erin Hills and the Straits before, I would spend the extra night SV to soak in that experience.

My suggested trip would be as follows:

Fly in early Thursday and drive to Whistling.

Play the Straits.

Drive to SV.

Par 3 if time allows.

Friday:

Play 18 on Mammoth and SV

Stay at SV

Saturday:

Dewsweeper round on the par 3 course followed by a round on either SV or MD.

Drive to EH.

If planning after August, play the putting course.

Sunday:

Play Erin Hills.

Fly out.

I like this rotation as the drive from MKE to Whistling is quick and easy on the interstate. Allows you to maximize your time at SV and enjoy the unique experience and you end your trip at EH which is the closest to MKE. As far as booking a tee time without staying at Kohler, I have never had an issue and have booked months in advance,

SUPER helpful, thanks so much! I'm not sure if you can fly into MKE from NY earlier than landing at 10am...so it might be tough doing that...although if you play at 1pm, finish at 6pm and then hit the road, you should be there for a 9pm dinner...but that's probably wishful thinking?

I don't think you will have trouble booking the Straits, even if you don't stay at one of the American Club properties. I booked a time about 3 months in advance and even though I am staying on site, they did not ask me that question. I also don't think the price is any different whether you are staying there or not, but I could be wrong about that.

Planning a similar trip in 2020.

Our plan is arrive late into Milwaukee, stay at County Clare Inn, play Brown Deer next day, another night at CC, then to Erin Hills for an overnight in their on course lodge playing both days, on to Lawsonia, staying one night somewhere in Ripon, then to Sand Valley for two nights, playing as much as SV/MD as possible, finally going across to Sheboygan and 4 nights at Blue Harbor Resort, playing the Straits, Blackwolf Run and The Bull. Then drop down to Milwaukee and home. So its a clockwise loop from MKE and should take 10 days. Appreciate any comments on the accomm side as well as on our course rota.

Think we will end up doing 2 nights SV and 1 night EH.

Any golf trip to Wisconsin that doesn't include Lawsonia is never going to be considered "perfect".

I am not privy to the secret Lawsonia handshake, nor do I keep a pot of incense burning atop a Lawsonia scorecard. I like the course. I think it is worthy of a discussion of for the top 10 public venues in the state, although it is hardly a slam dunk. There I said it. I'm a heretic. On a scale of $'s/quality it stands up better.

flying from NY we can't land in MKE before 10am, so our itinerary is likely going to be:

Thursday PM 18 at Sand Valley/Mammoth

Friday AM: Sandbox and 36 Sand Valley/Mammoth

Saturday PM: Erin

Something to consider is Whistling has a pretty solid twilight rate. Not sure what time of year you're heading over, but I know in late September-early October you can get on around 1:30 PM for $210. If you were still looking for opinions, I'd say:

Thursday - Twilight round at Whistling

Friday - Mammoth Dunes and Sandbox

Saturday - Erin Hills

Sunday - Home

I don't think you can do a Wisco trip, especially if it's your first time, without hitting Whistling; however, you're playing Erin Hills, which might be my favorite course anywhere! And two nights at SV does sound pretty great. You'll have a blast no matter what you choose!

Hey guys. I write for WRX and I just did a story on a Straits + Sand Valley weekend. I wish I had more time to check out a few other courses but I can definitely help if you have any travel questions. The article is called "The Whistling Straits & Sand Valley Experience" so I would check that out first to whet your appetite. Then feel free to reach out to me!

How far is MKE from Sand Valley? Google says ~2.5 hours, SV says approximately the same, but someone told me it's 3.5 hours....seems hard to believe unless road closures?

I make this drive all the time. So long as you’re not hitting rush hour traffic in MKE or when you are going through Madison you should expect the trip to take no longer than 2.5 hours. I would say I average about 2:15 when there is minimal traffic. There is no way that it would take 3.5 hours unless you were driving through a blizzard.

Phreddy. Thank you. Finally someone said it!

Lawsonia Links is a nice course. It does have great greens. It's in a league with Washington County, not with Erin Hills or Whistling Straits... I think way too many people get caught up in the SV/LL combo, and they completely ignore the really nice Lake Arrowhead 36-hole complex a mile or two away from SV.

You could save a bit of time by using different airports. Milwaukee for the Kohler area and La Crosse for Sand Valley. Or since you likely have to get connections anyway to get to Milwaukee anyway, you could just fly direct to O’Hare and hit Whistling Straights on your way up to Kohler, hit Kohler, drive to SV, and the fly out of La Crosse.

The State of Wisconsin recently dropped $4 million into the Wisconsin Rapids airport to better accommodate private jets headed to Sand Valley. Just sayin'.

Personal preference. I really liked them both, but prefer SV...MD is so wide open, huge, expansive....It might be slightly more fun for the group as a whole, for whatever game you play, or if it's the 2nd 18 of the day to allow for a more relaxed round, allow for a little more forgiveness off the tee; whereas SV is a bit more of a test. That being said you can't go wrong with either.....might be difficult to do but take a vote after playing them both and see if the tee sheet will allow for a switch if that's the way the vote ends up.

What Ode1 said perfectly. I think SV is the more difficult course and requires better shot making. But what is really interesting about MD is that there is a HUGE landing area for the less accomplished player, yet the same hole offers a low handicap player a speed slot option off the tee if you want to test your game. It is the rare course that a wide variety of skill levels can play it and enjoy it.
