30th Birthday Trip Destination

Recommended Posts

My fiancée has offered to take me a short getaway for my 30th this summer before our wedding next year and the next chapter of our lives together. That being said, I am having trouble thinking of where to head and I am looking some recommendations. We would either be driving from Iowa or would fly out Chicago and are looking for a quick 3-5 day jaunt in late July or early August.

I have played Sand Valley, Erin Hills, and Whistling Straits over the past year. We visited Myrtle Beach last spring, Charleston and Kiawah last fall and TPC Sawgrass/ Jacksonville area over the winter. Streamsong is planned for buddies trip in 2020 before the wedding and Bandon is planned for this November.

Arcadia and Michigan were my first thought but that being more local, I figure I would be able to squeeze that in on a different trip. I am thinking we should knock out a destination further away as that could be made more difficult once kids are in the equation. I am thinking of the Northeast or SoCal as we have yet to visit these spots.

Appreciate your thoughts and suggestions!

Does she golf? Cabot could be great and with the other courses you have mentioned it seems like you wouldn't mind the travel getting there. (that fits north east right ?)

We got engaged at Arcadia, it is absolutely beautiful. I don't know if there is a better place to relax after playing than behind 18 green and have a drink. We paired it with Forest Dunes, which was great too and with the AB south course you now have 5 courses between those 2 places.

Red Sky Ranch in Colorado and Bend, Oregon (we have done Bandon) are on my radar for my Fiance and I's next trip.

There is obviously 1 big location missing from your list of played and scheduled and that is Pebble.

She does back home and has on a few trips like Myrtle Beach and such but she does not partake in the "Big" courses as she calls them. She is more than happy to walk along with me during my round or spend the day at pool/spa. Cabot is out for this trip as she does not have a passport... I am thinking we save Arcadia and MI and use that as an extended getaway after the wedding and kids, etc but Arcadia and Forrest Dunes are for sure on my to play list.

If you are willing to pony up the cash she will thank you for taking her to the Monterey peninsula. Of all the places my wife loves to accompany me while golfing, Pebble is her favorite by a wide margin. Only warning is that she will want to go back every year....it gets expensive. She took me for my 30th and we have been back every year (15) since (her request). She is a runner and runs nearly the whole course before the first group tees off. We typically go in the fall, and around Feb, she starts to make comments about going to Pebble. If you stay on property and enjoy the scenery it is unmatched IMO. Here are a few photos from last fall. US open prep was fully underway.3ljp79v8baez.jpg

Pinehurst area? Tons of excellent golf, and a fairly short flight.

For a July/August trip, I think MN, WI, or MI makes the most sense, weather-wise. Head to other places during the cold months.

My out of the box suggestion is Prince Edward Island, Canada. Maybe you can get a decent airfare out of Chicago. Even if it's not cheap, the golf is said to be really good and quite affordable.

Another suggestion for the Monterey area. Even if you don't do Pebble there are plenty of other options.

Though off the radar I would toss out one of my favorite locations. Whitefish Mt. There is some amazing golf in Iron Horse, Northern Pines and bit up the road Wilderness Club (On my top 10 list). Additionally you have Glacier National Park you can spend time at and Flathead Lake which are all amazing to see. Whitefish is a awesome little town and everyone is so friendly. _*Its like Aspen before Aspen became Aspen......_

Thank you all for the suggestions. I was leaning towards Pinehurst but after talking with her, she is leaning towards northern Michigan as the weather may cooperate a bit more.

Pebble was my first thought but that has been in discussions for a while with my two brothers and father as a brothers and dad trip in the next few years. My dad turns 70 in 2021 and we thought the three of us may treat him to the experience.
