No, No Not Demo Day!

Recommended Posts

Our club hosted a demo day over the weekend and we had 6 OEM's show up. I decided to do a walk through and ogle the shinny objects despite the fact that I feel pretty good about my game and really happy with my bag. Hitting off grass, with Trackman confirming what the eye was seeing my wallet started to vibrate in my pocket. Of all the drivers I hit, the TS3 looked, felt, flew and sounded the best. I had never seriously thought about Titleist woods/metals. The Callaway 3W was a rocket launcher. I learned so much by being able to take a given head and try half a dozen different shafts and doing it on a range where you can see the full ball flight and not just a simulation. I hit some true blades just for chuckles, and on this day, my swing was in the slot. Great feel and ball flight, but I am beyond kidding myself that I could play them consistently through a season. I have developed a real appreciation of how much of a role the shaft selection plays and get past a fixation on simply choosing a club head.

But, in a game where confidence is paramount, I am kicking myself. I walked in feeling really good about the bag I was toting around and now.....

Nothing worse than trying out a few fancier clubs than your own! Your clubs never feel the same and you are left wondering if that upgrade would really turn your game around! However, there is definitely a "honeymoon" period with new clubs, balls, etc where every shot is perfect. After a round or two my old game creeps back in.

I always swap hitting my existing clubs with the demo day clubs, and compare the Trackman numbers. Usually not a big difference, if any at all. That is why I have the same driver, fairway wood and hybrid in my bag for over 10 years. There is absolutely a placebo effect with hitting demo clubs. Going back and forth between your clubs and the new shiny stuff on the range, helps to mitigate/minimize the "honeymoon" effect.

Titleist had a demo day at my club today. I played with a CPGA pro that’s a Titleist ambassador. I hit his TS2 3 wood a couple times and hit it well so I decided to stop by the demo event. I ended up getting getting fit for a TS2 driver and 3 wood. I picked up a couple mph ball speed with the TS2 driver over my G400 max. I’m still undecided if I’m going to get the driver but I’ll definitely be getting the TS2 3 wood. It was a little bit longer than my F9, the dispersion was better and the ball flight was better.

Driver: Cobra Aerojet
3 wood: Titleist TSR2

7 wood: Ping G430 max

Utility iron: Callaway Apex ut

4 Hybrid: Callaway Paradym
Irons: Titleist T100 5-pw
Wedges: Vokey sm9 50*, 54*, 60*
Putters: TaylorMade Spider X

Scotty Cameron Newport 2

Ball: Titleist ProV1x

I love the performance but it is so loud it literally made my ears ring. The tech that was fitting me was even getting startled. I hit high on the face and I guess that’s where it makes the loudest sound. But I liked the flight on it. Interestingly I didn’t hit it too much left.

I just went through all the drivers out there replacing my 400max. I ended up with the m5 and while I picked up a ton of yardage I really miss the g400max forgiveness. With the latest reschedule I went from +2.1 to +1.6, mainly because of the last 5 rounds with the m5.... I’m still getting used to it but every round I wonder if I should go back to my max...

The forgiveness is why I'm so hesitant to replace my max. No matter where I hit it on the face I get decent yardage and I don't have the really big misses with it.

However, there is definitely a "honeymoon" period with new clubs, balls, etc where every shot is perfect. After a round or two my old game creeps back in.

From 1974 to 1994, I played the same set of MacGregor MT irons. From 1994 to 2008, I played my next set, component/clone Ping Eye2 irons. In 2008-09 I underwent a full bag replacement as I needed to dump stiff shafts and my obsolete driver. What I found was this: many of the OEMs make at least one iron model I could play - as long as it had the right shaft in it. And if I'm playing a driver I was fitted for, newer models may be just as good, but if often takes five years or so for something truly _better_ to emerge. (I'm in my Sixties, so Father Time often is a factor when I need to change.)

I love the demo days and expos to keep up on what the different OEMs are producing. But, recently I've been able to resist changing out because something _might_ be five yards longer.

Haha... I decided to rebuild my bag this season... Have 2 of the 13 clubs I plan on buying... My warehouse got shut down... Have plenty of time for golf, have 0 money for golf... Will have another job (hopefully!) and then I'll have the money and not the time...

Granted, my irons are 22 years old, so it's time for them to go.
