A “newspaper” score?

Recommended Posts

It's when a score is "published" before the final stroke is made.

The term was first used by publishing magnate, William Randolph Hearst circa 1938. It was sleepy back nine on Pinehurst #2 when Hearst and playing partners Wallace Kelley (no relation to DeForest), Robert Cobb (inventor of the modern cobb salad) and Charles Lippincott (American Soda Fountain Co.) experienced a torrential downpour of rain. They quickly moved to the trees and covered their heads with newspapers. In order to finish the hole they had started prior to the rain shower and before moving to the next hole, Hearst declared a “newspaper par” for each player. The term has been loosely used over the years to “record a score” without actually holing out.

As fascinating as that is and thank you, I’ve always wondered about the origin of the Cobb salad! And that was my dad’s mother’s maiden name - but she wasn’t a salad Cobb. And no lie, she was a teacher and the name of her first principal in the Yarmouth,Iowa area in the ‘30s was Mr. Corn.
