This May Be The Craziest Thing I have Ever Attempted

Recommended Posts

One of our older courses here called Eagle's Nest has extended it's yardage to 8100 yards no joke. Now that is 8100 at sea level too. It is a pretty interesting course anyhow what I call a hidden gem. I worked up there many years ago and like the course. They have a few things posted on the net golf adviser etc. It was formerly owned by Senator Dick Elliott who passed away a few years ago. His son now owns it and has put some money into it. Anyhow after the background this is the crazy thing I want to do------------- Try to break 100 from the very back tees with persimmon and blades. I am no illusionist and I know my game. It will be tough. first off from what I read you have to get permission to play the back tees. I am going to get with management and seek permission and a time to attempt this. I am going old school all the way and play my Precision irons and a mix of woods. Can I do it do not know but relish the challenge--- In some eyes I may be an idiot but golf is supposed to be fun. I could care less what others think or care if I shoot 110. I am going to try it. Lets hear some feedback-- Am I ready for the Rubber Room?

Modern ball or wound? And by blades do you mean your precisions, machogans, etc? We want the stu 8100yd WITB!

Also you’re talking to the guy who drives it 250 on a good day who played the 7200 yard tips at Royal St. George’s because I paid $200 and I might as well enjoy the whole bleeping golf course!

(And you will break 100 I would think...)

IMHO the MacHogans would be just shy of cheating because I play them so much anyhow. I did try to practice the FC-4000s that Stickfish sent me yesterday. I do not think my back will hold up for 18 holes at that venue. So at this point it will maybe be the MacHogans or the Precisions. Persimmon woods I have picked out--- From my stash I pulled a Penna Model 12 which has a sorta deep face but not as deep as a JS or LFF---- but it does have a regular shaft. My 4 wood is a Keyhole Mac Randy gave me and believe it or not has a regular shaft--- The topping on this is a original Louise Suggs "First Lady" 6 wood---- Putter will be more than likely a PGA Tommy Armour Ironmaster or the putter that is front line for me lately a Spalding TP Mills #3----- Some of my buds on the other site I go on think I can break 90. One of those guys has actually played golf with me. If I play the Mac Hogans I will probably ditch the 6 wood. This will not be a just go and do thing I am going to seriously practice for this. More than likely I may start out with a balata ball more than likely a HT-100. But I may go to the Lady Bridgestone or a Wilson 50. I am also going to play the ball down which I mostly do anyhow. With my distance of about 220 on the persimmon driver and a 600 yard par 5 and 2 Par 3s over 250 I am going to have to rely on my short game quite a bit

It's 10 strokes over bogey golf...you've GOT this man! Keep it in front of you and away from the hazards (penalty areas) and you got it made. My advise, throw something like a Stan Thompson Ginty 7 wood in the bag to advance it good distance out of the rough if you need it. If you play every hole like you are playing bogey golf and don't get greedy, I say you can pull it off. And I don't think it's crazy..it sounds fun. I wish I was playing with you. If the golf course is reluctant to let you try it, challenge the local pro to play with you and outfit him with some of your extra gear. I'll bet he'll get a kick out of it too.

I think you are going to rely on that 4 wood more than anything, even then you will be laying up on most of the par 4's. I went through the card some news site had posted and saw that the 8100 is measured to the _back_ of the greens instead of the 7950 to the centers. But when looking at the pure distances and adjusting I think it will play to about a par of 90. I think you've got it in the bag.

I read the same article that is what gave me the idea in the first place. One thing you have to factor in too even at 7950 to the center of the greens it is at seal level . So by dead reckoning I always figure 10% so that would put it close to 8100

LOL shows you are as crazy as I am!! But it would be fun with you along. And the Ginty is a great suggestion and believe it or not I have one. One thing I am sorta fuzzy on is if the owner and I know him will try to make a publicity stunt out of this and that I do not want. This is just a personal challenge to myself. I posted on here and another site I go on because I am among friends.

Yep it will be balata balls. I think I have enough to make it through. Let me point out I will be practicing some and it will more than likely be a couple months. And I just remembered that on top of the HT-100s and professional 90s I have I have 3 brand new Palmer Balata never hit in the sleeve that Scooter sent me a few years back

It's completely doable ... depending on how you do it. If you try to reach all the 460 yard par 4s in 2, you're most likely going to put up some big numbers. If you play everything as a +1 par (3s as 4s, etc), you should put up quite a few "pars" and an occasional "birdie". Layup on the 250 yard par 3s and try to get up and down for a 3 ... be happy with a 5 on the par 4s. Have a "par" of 90, and you'll be well under triple digits.

I think we all want to try this at heart. I know my 50’s Spalding set would be fun for sure. Maybe one day the wrx classics can book a tourney there and do it all together.

And stu I think I’ve only played 4 rounds at anything more than 500’ above sea level! Sea level golf is just golf for me!

You have the game plan I have in mind exactly---- Good example #17 which is a par 5---- With me hitting the persimmon driver only around 220 or so it will take me 3 pretty good whacks to get on in regulation. #18 the par 3 is over water no way I can carry it over. I am going to depend a lot on my short game and putter---- I used to work at that course but it has been 13 years since I have played it

The links at Rolling Hills formerly Sevillano Links in Corning CA at 7823 but #3 is 501 from extra back tee adding 115, #13 add 50 to 472, and 18 add 25 to 711 uphill and course goes from 7823 to 8013. I've played it several times once greens were 13-14 stimpmeter. The time I played the 8013 was with a couple of World Long Drive guys. On the 18th one of them rammy cackled his drive on the right side of the fairway around 350 uphill to the 711 dogleg left hole. He got to his drive thinking he could scare the green in 2 only to look at the green that still looked 4 bills away. My friends I played there most carried the ball 280-290 off the tee and it was tough getting inside 200 for your 3rd shot. Loads of trouble left. Other than that with crazy schlepping Olympic Club Lake, Spyglass, Pebble, and The Point same day after my high school graduation would be #1.

Well practiced this AM and it turned out well----- Practiced a driver I did not think I could hit. A few weeks ago I found a Power Bilt Citation in the pile at work. Looks like the one in Randy's avatar only a little lighter color. Has the fiber 3 pin inset. Reminded me of my beloved Citation from years past that finally cracked. Anyhow I rescued it. Expect anything else of me? It has a "C" shaft did not know if I could hit it . Took it along with my Penna Model 12 regular shaft on a whim. I got to the course real early. I refuse to hit range rocks with my persimmons so I brought along about 50 older Precepts and Srixon Soft Feels. I was planning to get a small bucket of range balls to warm up with. I had several range tokens in my bag but the machine was locked up. Anyhow went to the putting green and learned something else too. Felt good and the club house had not opened yet so I figured WTH? Hit about 10 balls with that driver cold turkey and was cranking it high ball flight and all. Could not believe I could hit a C shaft anymore. They opened up the machine and I got range balls and went through my regular routine with the irons ( MacHogans). Went back to cranking that driver some more. One of the early regulars came over on the cart and asked " Stuey are you cranking persimmon?" I told him sure am! He told my other pal Rich see I told you. He further stated " I can not see well anymore at a distance but my hearing is good and I heard that crack and knew it." There was a Tourist golfer beside me hitting the latest and greatest Titleist stuff looking like a walking Titleist billboard. He asked why in the HE double hockey sticks I would be hitting that outdated stuff? I gave my answer " Because I still CAN!!" I shot it with the range finder and I was cranking it about 225 on the fly very high not a lot of roll out because the grass was wet from dew and they had watered the range earlier. This one pro that teaches there had arrived and set up some of his equipment. He is a pretty decent guy and was curious too. I told him I did not conceive in my wildest dreams I could swing a C shaft anymore. He asked what I thought my SS was? I told him around maybe high 80s maybe 90 max. He put me on the machine I was an average of 99. He told me I was generating effortless power and turning good through the ball. I was hitting my irons flush too. I think I have a new routine for practice get loose of course and start off with the persimmon driver. Main thing is my back is not hurting at all. I am planning on playing this afternoon around 4 or so after all the tourons have left. Yep it amazed me that so many showed up today.

Could not find the Ginty but in my searches I found a little Tourney Custom 5 wood I had forgot about. It is hook faced as heck. I can hit that thing. I found it in one of the persimmon bags. I keep covers on all my stuff so finding an individual club can be a challenge some times. I pulled the cover off and saw it and it was like an old friend I had not seen in years. I went WOW! Hooky ! I had named it that years ago. Did not look anymore for the Ginty. I can hit all kinds of shots with that thing. Found it's matching brother the 4 wood. It is not as hooky. I got those two clubs back in the late 70s early 80s. I remember I always liked them but they never had the right shafts for me. Now those shafts fit me fine. Hit them good this morning too.

That is what I will be carrying the 1 iron for--- I have several including the Tommy Armour one Richard graciously sent me--- Hey Richard if you are reading this I have fell in love with that thing. Since I am bagging my VIPs with the Hogan shafts I only need one fairway wood and that is a old Mac keyhole 4 wood Randy (OSR) gave me when he visited me last year. See some of you guys are in this too. Now as far as straight classic I may have "cheated" a little--- I did use my rusty 1997 vintage Scotty Santa Fe but I had did some extensive work and mods on it and wanted to try it out. On those greens which are burned up I could have putted just as good or bad with the 1 iron. On the actual round at Eagle Nest I will more than likely use a Modified Bulls Eye ( expect any different from me) or a beloved Spalding TP Mills #3
