Best Laser Rangefinder 2019

Recommended Posts

well I own an XE, love the XE.

Only thing that annoys me I can't figure out how the adjusted number works. The other night it was 14*C and heavy fog coming in and it was giving me 12 yards longer on a 120 yard shot and it was perfect. I have been in Houston mid April at 26*C and it gave me 2 yards longer at 110. Still never got one adjusted yardage(over 60 yards) to match the real. I want to know at sea level what environmental conditions give the actual number, there must be a few conditions that do, taking out the slope.

I've had my original stabilized Nikon Coolshoot 80VR since they first came out (and I'd get the Pro if anything ever happened to mine). I know people on this forum always think whatever they have is the best but I've got to say, an image-stabilized rangefinder is so different and so much better than a non-stabilized one it's like using a Titanium driver instead of a wooden one.

My current laser is an older Nikon (LaserCaddie line), showing signs of maybe needing replacement. Been thinking about my options, and with less than steady hands, the idea of the Nikon stabilization is intriguing. Nice to see comments from an actual user. :)

I don't have particularly shaky hands but normal rangefinders seem to max out around 200 or so yards for being sure I'm aiming at a flag. With the 80VR I have no problem at all ranging the flag on 500-yard Par 5.

Not that I need the range to a 500-yard Par 5 very often! But I'm just saying the stabilized one is easier to aim at 500 than a normal one would be at, say, 250. And keeping it steady at a normal distance like 150 or 180 is a piece of cake.

Another thing it makes easier is being able to shoot something like the lip of a bunker at 130 yards, then the flag at 140 yards to figure out the flag is up front just over the bunker (of if the flag was 160 it means it's on the back of the green). With my previous rangefinders I just could never be sure I was catching the lip of the bunker or some other spot in the bunker or the edge of the green or whatever. That comes in surprisingly handy when there's no pin sheet.

FWIW, sales guys at Roger Dunn in LA all tell me the Nikon Coolshot Pro Stabilized is by far the best unit out there right now...don't think they were trying to sell me on it as I was pretty clear I was only interested in a GPS watch. I'll take the speed and ease of a GPS watch over a few yards accuracy...but then again I'm a bogey golfer!

I think the real question is how much do you want to spend? The best is probably the most expensive with all the features, as talked about many times the technology of grabbing the flag in mili seconds, screening out background yardages is about the same on any of the quality units....Precision Pro and Golf Buddy for instance are significantly less than Bushnell/Leupold but IMO work as well or better. Good Luck!

The VR feature on the top-end Nikons is the only legitimate upgrade (for my purposes) available. If I weren't willing to splash out for that functionality, I agree with just grabbing one of the white-label generic ones for $100-$200 and be done with it. The basic golf rangefinder technology is very functional nowadays at almost any price point.

Bushnell is the obvious leader but man they are expensive. I use the GPS feature on The Grint golf app and get around the course just fine. Every now and again it tells me a yardage and it seems suspect, but for a guy like me who doesn't have the dialed in game that commands knowing the EXACT yardage to a pin, that doesn't bug me too much. 95% of the time I'm hitting to the center green yardage regardless of the pin, unless I'm under 100 yards, then I'll think about trying to tuck it close.

I just can't see myself spending $500 for a range finder. Maybe I'd consider it if I went to a range very often that never marked their flags and I was also a scratch index. Otherwise, I'll save my $$ for lessons or whatever else I blow my money on.

So I’m new to rangefinders the last few years. Had a Nikon Coolshot 40i that I really didn’t like. It would constantly misread and ended up costing me more strokes than anything. I’m upgrading to a Bushnell Pro X2 after reading a lot of reviews of the XE. People seem to love the X2 and for the XE, I hear A ton of issues. Reviews aren’t very good on amazon or anywhere else I’ve seen. Am I missing something? Because to me, it looks like they tried to upgrade a great product and missed the mark, making the $100 markdown on the X2 really appealing. Thoughts are appreciated.

I love my XE. Upgraded from a 10 year old 1600 Pro.

> Do you have trouble capturing flagsticks? That’s what I keep Hearing is you have to pan over to the stick but the X2 you can shoot right at it. Is the slope with environmental elements added accurate?

to get a flag you keep your finger on the button, then pan to get the jolt.

You can click on anything to get a reading.

So far so good with elements, just annoys me I am still to get anything over 150 yards to play 150 or less at sea level; I have played in Scotland at 45*F and Texas at 96*F.

All the golf magazines seem to be giving the laser amazing reviews.

When you target something it gives you the real yardage - 150

it gives you the slope 0%

It gives you the adjusted Elements number 152

I have never had the elements adjusted to match the actual yardage on the flat and sea level. In warmer conditions the ball flies further so surely 150 will play less than that in the heat of Houston.

Seems like the Bushnell construction has become much more plastic and the ability to last is nothing like the early generations which were much heavier and durable, I still see guys with old 1600's going strong. I suppose it is all by design for higher margins and less product life to have the consumer repurchase every few years.

I had problem with Leupold myself. Would not give yardages and lock on problems. Sent one back, they sent me a new one. Same problems. Gave it to a friend, he has problems with it also.
