White Golf Shirts Ruined by Sunscreen

not sure about removing the stain but I did mange to keep for it happening for me. I make sure to apply the sunscreen and wearing an old tee shirt to the coruse. change into the shirt at rhe course and gtg. no more stains. seems like my issue was that the suncreen had not absorbed into the skin and that would cause the yellow in the collar area , eithe that or your could apply sunscrrn and wait to put your shirt on until right before you leave. either way has gotten tir of the yellow makrs on my white shirts.

i've used, with success, the shout spray and a toothbrush. works like a charm

Two parts dawn dish washing liquid to one part hydrogen peroxide-rub into stain with small brush let sit for half hour then wash normally

There is some misinformation in this thread. What is true is the following::

Culprit is avobenzone (or a derivative thereof) - found in "chemical" sunscreens (most "spray on" sun screens). That, coupled with iron in the water leaves rust color stains on shirts. Much more of a problem in the northeast, especially with well-water as the iron concentration is very high.

DO NOT USE OXYCLEAN. It does not react well chemically and will make the stain worse.

Barkeepers Friend is the best solution I have found to date. Soak garment in bucket with this added. Let sit for an hour. Rinse thoroughly - then put in in regular wash.

Banana Boat kids SPF 50 has worked great for me. Stays on and doesn't burn the eyes. No stains on any of my white shirts.

Used Bullfrog for years and that stuff wrecks the sleeves and collar. Wife was able to get the stains out but I'm not using it again with good shirts.

I use Coppertone Sport spray on sunscreen and it leaves the discoloration on the collar as well. What I have found works is shout spray, elbow grease and letting it sit about 20-30 minutes before tossing it into the washer. I wash on cold and try to treat my white polo's almost immediately after wearing as well.

It typically gets most of the stain out, but it is a process.

Someone told me to apply hair shampoo directly onto the stained collar, then wash normally. I tried it on my new Uniqlo (100% polyester) white shirt collar and it removed the suntan lotion completely.

I've found that it might have to do with the Sunscreen used. I had the problem which my wife treated with a spray on prewash ????? shoots I can't remember what, then I changed to Blue Lizard sunscreen and the problem went away. Then Blue Lizard became hard to get and I went to Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF50, sold at Costco, and no problem. You might try changing your sunscreen. And if I remember the prewash I'll let you know. It was a common product......

Suave hair shampoo. DO NOT USE CONDITIONER. Rub the shampoo directly into the stain, then apply some more. Then roll the shirt up in a ball (tights part) in the center of the ball. Then wash normally. That will get mustard spots out of shirts or even the hardest of dirts spots out of pants.

What sunscreens do people recommend that won't stain shirts and offer adequate protection from the sun. I am a redhead so I need sunscreen that will still offer good protection.

I use Banana Boat kids 50spf and get zero stain plus no sunburn.

Any sunscreen that damages or stains a synthetic material shirt is something I want nowhere near my skin. It probably has all sorts of strong oxidizers and such.

 

I use either Coppertone Waterbabies 50 SPF or the CVS store-brand knockoff (the Coppertone is slightly thicker and stays in place longer, the CVS is slightly thinner and rubs in more easily). The active ingredients are: Octinoxate (7.5%), Octisalate (5%), Zinc Oxide (14.5%)

 

Sunscreen with Avobenzone and similar chemicals turns my skin red even before I go out on the sun. That can't be a good thing!
