I think I could break 200 at Bethpage Black

I hit the ball pretty straight. I would shoot a lot better than 200

Pat Perez, who fired 68-73, was even more emphatic. “A 20-handicapper would not break 200,

yeah I have seen 20 caps put up 15s on difficult holes. Big forced carries, thick rough, deep bunkers. Tons of wasted shots/lost balls/penalties can add up.

It depends on the conditions. If you and your buds were just out playing and had no one spotting where your balls went in the rough I doubt if you could carry enough balls to finish 18. The best golfers in the world were in the rough all day, and missing the fairway by a yard would make finding your ball pretty hard. Figure every missed fairway = lost ball with penalty. And if you managed to find your ball hacking it out of the rough would be pretty difficult. If you're playing from the tips this course could eat your scorecard in a hurry, but I think breaking 200 would certainly be possible. That is 11 strokes per hole which sounds realistic, but I've had a 13 on a relatively easy par 4 before so who knows.

That's an average of 11 a hole. Might be the dumbest take since the thread where people posted that a low index (something like 5-10) wouldn't make the cut at PGA tournaments if they tee'd off on the green on every hole

Honestly PGA pros are WAYYYYYYY better than any of us. But they are not gods.

200? Sheesh. The "worst" golfer in America shot 257 at Sawgrass in a round that included a 66 on the 17th hole.

A 20 handicap is breaking 200 every time

I remember this one. I thought at the time that he could use a putter down the cart path and do better than 66.

Pat Perez has been known to say things that have proven to be false. He point blank predicted Tiger was to retire soon. So anything he says next is just noises coming from the hole he eats from. 200 shots ? My goodness. That’s 11 shots per hole. Can he math ?

I played the Red--didn't want to wait 7hrs for a tee time-- from the member's tees in 2002 and shot 83 with borrowed clubs..

I was 56 years old then and relatively fit and healthy and still carried at least 225 yrs with the driver..

no way I can do that now at 73 of course but am pretty sure I would have broken 100 at the Black then..

PS: I was about a 9 hdcp at the time..

if you’re making an 11 on every hole, I’d think you’d be removed from the course before you finished the front 9, haha. As a 12 hdcp, I just broke 90 from the members tees (~6500 yds?). I was playing solid, steady golf. A couple pars, rest bogies and a double). But, you HAVE to hit the fairways or forget it. I was a fit 56 years old, and was really tired afterwards - a hard walk!

The course is not set up anything like it was this past weekend for regular play, at least not when I've played it. It would take recreational golfers about 8 hours to play a round if the rough was that deep. Also, the greens there are relatively flat and are cut to play at fairly normal speeds on regular days. I have played Winged Foot, and to me that was much more intimidating, just because of the greens. Some of the greens there you look at and say,"Are you serious?" The amount of undulation and the speed that they roll made me feel like every hole was a possible four putt. All that being said, Bethpage Black is one of my favorite courses that I've ever played. I love it and can't wait to go back again. I really think it's one of the best golfing experiences there is and it's right there available to anyone who wants it.

Played there from the back tees in my salad days in the 80s and 90s when you had to get there before 6am to get a ticket (I'd drive from NJ at 3am). Once past the 3rd hole, it was uh oh. #5 is not for pushers like me, then that carry on the par 5 #7, then the double ballb#sters 10 and 11. When you get to #15 the hardest, you have been thoroughly umbled hitting it uphill on that monster on your 2nd shot. #16 is a relief after that. #17 another uphill trek. #18 relatively easy compared to what you just been thru for 17 holes. Should be on anyone's bucket list assuming you're LT 12 GHIN. We viewed at as a religious pilgrimage type experience to play it, really great course. And what they have done to improve it !! since it is now major site, replacing Baltusrol in NJ for the US Open after the 93 Open.

There's a trillion guys at this site who have played it.

I've played it each of the last 5 years with golfers ranging from 2 handicaps to 15 handicaps.

I've played it from the white tees which give me similar shots into greens as the pros have. (about 40 yards a hole closer).

I've played it from the blue tees, which is a fair test for me. These are listed as 7450 on the card, but I've never seen them set up anywhere close to that.

I've played it from the BACK BOX on every single hole.

I played it one week after the Barclays one year (the stands were still up), so it might not have been "tournament conditions" but the greens were baked out. The rough was maybe mown down, but it was just as thick. And, those conditions weren't much different than normal conditions. That was the year Reed won with 275. BK was 272 this year, so it's not like the course was that much easier. Also, that 275 was (probably) with 7 playing back every day (it played as a par 71).

I have NOT played it in big winds.

The fairways and greens are in such nice condition (and the greens aren't that difficult) that you actually have some easier shots and putts than on your home course.

It still can only get so hard. One thing is that the playing field is WIDE, so you can get offline and still find your ball. It doesn't (usually) go into trees and there's no water. The fescue there is wispy in places, so you can find balls and play them. The rough is really thick, but it's not a black hole. You see where the ball went, and you can wander around for 20 seconds and find it. Some of the toughest finds are when you hit into a place that is bunkers and fescue and rough and you're not even sure which bunker it's in and it's all hilly so you can't see your ball from far away. Like these spots. . .

pvy5tftbb3x6.jpg

I've never seen someone over where HV3 was on 4. Those guys were trying to carry that bunker on the left and (almost) no one tries that. There's a ton of room to the right there where mortals play to. Oddly, we've looked for balls on 6 a lot. You want to bail right and the fescue comes in quick over there and it does seem to be thicker there.

But, they keep the woods pretty clean there, so it's easy to find balls. Even a 15 handicapper is going to hit some fairways and get a shot near the green and make a bunch of bogeys. You take a hole like 15. . .if you miss the fairway there, you can still find the ball, get it up to 100-130 and have a wedge in. So, TOUGH par, but easy double, with bogey fairly likely if you're smart and don't try to do too much with your second shot.

Yeah, those 15 cappers double more holes than they do at home, but at the end of the day, they get out with a couple pars, a bunch of bogeys a bunch of doubles and a couple triples/quads and shoot 98. And, if you're hitting fairways, you can score there. The rounds we've played there, the rating and slope seem pretty accurate. It doesn't play 20 strokes higher than the rating or anything dumb like that.

The worst thing for your round is the fact that you slept in your car, woke up at 5:30, and might be hungover.

We have a PERFECT example coming up!! Parfield and Hendrix are posting the Bethpage Black course vlog on YT now. They are of course playing match play, but I am going to keep track of their strokes. Allegedly both play off scratch?? So far, Parfield is +2 and Dan +3 after 3 holes. Keep in mind they also aren't playing off the back tees and are playing the course probably in the 6500 yard range so I'd guess a rating around 74.

Neither even has a glimmer of hope of breaking 80 though, I'm thinking they shoot around 90-95. From the black tees they probably shoot 100-105. Broadie Smith I think recently shot 84 from the very back tees with a "foot in the rough" and I wager he's between a 0-4 HC now as he's reported scores at or even slightly under par during tourney and pro am's. Even if the rough wasn't as long... Even the greens weren't a 14 stimp...that's still a pretty good score from the back tees.

I actually just watched a Bethpage Black vlog where 4 guys played match, one of them was not a good player. I'm talking like pretty much a total hack, well over a 20HC I would guess... He shot +69 from the whites. Even if moving to the back tees adds 3 strokes a hole, he still breaks 200.

This brings up a good but totally unrelated topic: When Crossfield shoots 20 over on a course rating of ~74, does that mean good coaches don't actually have to be good golfers? Can you understand golf (or any subject) well and teach it well, but not be all that great at execution? Certainly the opposite can be true. However, I'm not sure I'd take math lessons from somebody who can't add very well, or let somebody fix my car who can't use a torque wrench properly.

200 is too high but maybe not that far off. I have played it a few times and I can see where the strokes could pile up. There are lots of forced carries into greens completely circled by insane rough (i.e. no way to run the ball up to the green) and huge deep soft sand bunkers. It is almost always set up with US Open type conditions--narrow fairways hemmed in by thick rough, where even the slight misses get punished hard. There is lots of fescue and in my experience, it is extremely thick and unforgiving. Plenty of places to lose balls. Windy conditions are common. Greens are pretty friendly though.

If I had to bet money on it I'd take over 200. I'm assuming the following:

1. Course is played with strict rules of golf.

2. The 20HC is legit and not a sandbagger.

3. Course is playing PGA tour length and conditioning.

4. Player has to play in the wind/cold/rain that was present during this tournament.

5. Player has to deal with a PGA crowd and hecklers that come with it.

I think #5 would have a major impact.
