Golfing in the rain

Recommended Posts

Taking a few days off and booked nine holes at a local muni. The better half was playing 18 with her ladies league. Raining and +7C. Got there, nobody teeing off, got to start 15 minutes early. Play nine in about an hour thirty. Umbrella, rain gear. When I finish ,The courses ladies group were all standing around. I asked the starter and they let me play another nine due to the league cancellation. Nobody on the course and the rain stopped. Got around in an hour fifteen.

Shot 48, 47. Lost a few strokes due to mud. But a great day. A lot of geese on the course with the little goslings now hatching.

Sure beats a great day at work

I have one word for you "Monsoon". Living in Tucson I carry (literally walk, not ride) a rain jacket, rain gloves and umbrella, they're not that heavy.

My golf is limited and precious so I refuse to have it ruined by a little rain. Lightning? I'm outta there.

I played in a torrential downpour once in my early twenties. Had to stop at #14 because my 3wood slipped out of my hands during my follow through and ended up in a tree. It was a Callaway Warbird that I stole from my father's bag back when they cost $300. Spent the rest of the afternoon trying to get it down and eventually did - thankfully.

It was one of those experiences that taught me something...

I love playing competititions in rain as most people are too busy bellyaching to concentrate on golf.

The worst I ever played was a few years ago in well it wasn't windy but it was 34*, I'm surprised it didn't snow, with the rain and cold it was as playing about 3 clubs longer. We just missed winning as the rain quit during the second nine.

Rain gloves, a rain jacket you can swing in and a rain proof hat.

I play most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. If it’s raining then I get wet. I quite enjoy it actually, it adds another dimension to the game. It’s trickier in the snow tbh, but I still play if the course is open.

where I live rain is part of life. Played in a scramble this weekend, first six holes were in vertical water. Posted a 56, won a four Yeti chests, four Yeti mugs, certificates to the movies, dinner for two, a 20 dollar gas card, 100 dollar certificate to the pro shop and four rounds of free golf.

Don't forget rain pants! Walking 9 or 18 in wet pants isn't really a pleasant feeling. Neither is sitting down on a wet cart bench if your riding.

I play enough that I’m a fair weather golfer. No need to get wet and miserable when I can just play tomorrow. One of the perks of living in the desert after you retire.

I'm golfing in the rain

Just golfing in the rain

What a horrible feeling

'Plugged in the fairway again

I'm swearing at the clouds

Is that lightning up above?

Raise a club above my head

'Any wonder I'm not dead?

Think I'm going to pout

Umbrella's inside out

No matter how I try

D-mn grips, just can't stay dry

I've a frown upon my face

My play is a disgrace

Oh, woe is me

My club just flew into a tree

The bunker's now a moat

Putts skimming like a boat

There's a charge up in the air

Press on, do I dare?

The end is now in sight

Crack! Boom! What a fright!

Nature's getting her kicks

Think I'll play thirty-six

I got several pairs of fleece lined khakis that are great for wet weather.

Back in high school my 3 best friends and I played in a scramble tournament organized by a friend of one of our dads. We’d win or take 2nd every year and I think this was frowned upon by the older teams. So one year it is in in the mid 30s, windy and sleeting when we go off. It was brutal. We played all 18 and came in with a very respectable score. Come to find out they called it after 3 holes and never came to get us. They ate lunch and left all while we’re plugging away in the sleet and wind. Needless to say I hate golfing in the elements now.

I like teeing off immediately after a rainstorm that was strong enough to chase everyone off the course and soak them enough to not want to go back out, but not strong enough that the course has standing water on the greens. Then I get the whole course wide open in front of me, and it's fun to really stick the ball close on approach shots to the wet/soft greens.

Otherwise, I am OK playing in a light rain, but once my grips and gloves get wet, it's game over.

There were boomers predicted to come through yesterday. I'll be the 1st to say that I WILL NOT play in a downpour. Was prepared to play 9, then the rains would come and I'd be done. Got through 18 in about 2.5 hrs and played another 5-6 holes just goofing around (1 club for the entire hole, playing out of each others bags etc.) good time. Eagled a par 5 with my 19* hybrid. LOL

As long as it's not cold and/or windy and fairly light rain I'm okay with it. In fact it can make me play better by helping me zone in.

But I'll always remember a round I played a couple of years ago at Feldon Valley, UK. It was sunny when we started but after the first hole it absolutely threw it down for fifteen minutes. Then the sun came back out (typical UK weather for late spring). The rest of the round was sunny and warm but it's hard to enjoy gorgeous weather on a golf course when the last 12 holes are played with soaking wet underpants.
