80 mph 7 iron - Modus 105 - Irons Demo

OspreyCI

Recommended Posts

I was demoing numerous irons today on GC2 and I was consistently swinging 7 irons at 80 mph. Starting to think the Modus 105 Stiff Soft Stepped 1x are too weak for me. I have those in the P790.

Best iron I hit was the Titleist MB Project X 6.0. Accuracy was and distance control was unbelievable. 165 yds on the money and kept hitting g a baby fade hitting the white line.

Also tried:

Mizuno 919 HM Modus 120S - NO

MIZUNO 919 Tour Modus 105S - Good/OK

Titleist AP2 DG S300 Black - NO

TM P790 - DG 105 - 10- 15 yds farther than Titleist MB PX 6.0, but control

Was not good.

Man I am confused. Any feedback?

Are you sure about the GC2 numbers? Reason I ask is that the last time I was testing clubs (2 months ago) my numbers were 78 SS and carry at 138 with a 7 and regular shaft. Something just does not compute............Your SS with a stiff shaft must be higher than what you were shown. I confirmed my numbers on the course and I would suggest you do the same.

I have a driver PXG fitting tomorrow and will be able to hit some irons too. I will confirm numbers with PXG irons.

Even if the GC2 numbers aren’t accurate then numbers were all hit in the same monitor at the same time.

Why do you think the Modus 105's are too soft for you? You don't say in OP.

What are you seeing on the course?

I just am not that accurate with my P790’s as much as I should be. The PX 6.0 was just so damn accurate.

The numbers are hard to get off the screen be cause it flashes and goes away.

Sorry, should have clarified. I have Ben playing my P790’s Modus 105 Stiff SSx1 for over a year and just miss greens both left and right. The stiffer shafts I was demoing just we’re much straighter. Never thought I could handle the PX 6.0. I always thought it would feel like rebar to me.

I play Modus 105 Stiff straight in ( 78-80 6 iron speed) and they work great for me. Very accurate.

I hate PX in general, because to me they lack feel and hurt my wrists and elbows ( as do most stepless shafts)

If the PX 6.0 feel OK to you and you like what you're seeing, go for it.

I went down this road for the past three years. I went to a fitting in a hitting bay off mats out to a range. Trackman clearly showed that the PX 6.0 was the best shaft paired with the CF16. I ended up ordering the clubs and the on course performance was absolutely horrendous. I would shank balls, hit fat shots, thin shots. I even went and had the clubs soft stepped to 5.5’s. Results were similar.

I ended up selling them and went to another couple fittings over the past few years. I was fit into Ping i200 X100, AP2 AMT X100 then to JPX 900 PXLZ 5.5. None of these worked out and I ended up going to a Club Champion fitting earlier this year. The clear winner for me was the Z585 NSPro 950GH. I would have never had looked at or the that shaft, but the results were great during the fitting and just as good on the course. I ended up ordering the Modus 105 in the wedges, but I haven’t been impressed with the results.

I swing my 6 iron around 88 mph and I launch it at 22*. The higher launch shaft with the lower launch heads just work for me.

It really does depend on the person. It seems like at PXG you liked the PX 6.0. Personally, I swing a 6 like the person above me (88mph) and find even the 5.0 Project X to feel way too stiff, heavy, and boardy. Truthfully, even my DG105 are getting to the point of feeling a bit lumpy and stout as I've moved away from a more handsy swing to something more in line with using the body. I could probably get away going to like a Steelfiber 80 or Accra 90 in that weight range and be just as well off. I've found I do well with smooth, low launch shafts. I quite like the Nippon V90 and Oban 100s as well.

Thanks. After my PXG driver fitting I the PXG 0211’s and definitely want those heads. I am going back for a full iron fitting . I hit those with the PX 6.0 and they were working really good. The fitter said those were good, but he wants to try different shafts too. When I can scarp up the funds I will go back for a real fitting.

The shafts are basically polar opposites in terms of profile...and the biggest differences are in the butt side...but it really has zero to do with being early or late.

And there is a decent weight difference between those two depending on what flex.
