Spikes vs Spikeless

Recommended Posts

I've long been a supporter of golf shoes with spikes, but recently I purchased a pair of spikeless Adidas shoes off the sale rack to use at the range and have recently began thinking that I actually get better rotation out of my swing with spikeless then with spikes. I roll my lead foot some through my finish and using spikeless shoes has allowed this transition to occur a bit more natural then when using my tour 360 2.0's. I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on this. Are spikeless shoes known to be a bit easier to flex or rotate in general? I've begun looking at purchasing a pair of the adipure shoes as my daily gamers but wanted to put this out there 1st.

I am not sure they have helped me in my rotation or swing. I know some guys state they need spikes because they are swinging hard and need the traction. I won't ever buy another shoe with spikes. I just find the spikeless to be more comfortable and I try and swing within myself so don't really have any slipping problem.

I'd be interested to hear from guys like this that have switched. I am a bigger guy and I swing relatively hard, so I've always been told to use shoes with spikes. However, the most comfortable looking shoes out there are spikeless, and I've been curious to try them.

If anybody that is bigger that swings hard has switched from spikes to spikeless, please speak up!

I prefer spiked shoes with stable platform. Currently wearing Footjoy Ikon's and loving them. I've got some Biom Hybrid's as well but they feel like slippers (to use a friends analogy) and I don't feel as well anchored with those, particularly if the course is wet, which is often the case when I play.

Spikeless for summer and spikes for the rest of the year. Well I only have one pair of spikeless so even in summer they get rotated with he spikes so they get a bit more air. In general though, I haven't found much of a difference. Slips definitely happen more without the spikes though. If there's anything riding on the round at all, I'm going with the spikes

I bought a pair of cheap spikeless Nike shoes when I left my Adidas 360 shoes at my parents house while visiting. Once I had both pairs in my possession, I swore that I liked the spikes better. Flash forward a couple years and I have subconsciously switched to wearing the spikeless shoes 90% of the time or so, only busting out the 360's in the spring when things are super wet. I am 100% on board with spikeless.

I've been playing spikeless for a long time and they are comfortable but I really want to find a pair that offers decent traction in wet conditions. True Linkswear fit me the best but they just don't work with wet grass.

I was a spikes guy but then I started having foot issues not related to golf. I still have 1 pair of Adidas spikes that are winter rain shoes but now i’m Spikeless and loving it. All the spikeless i’ve tried seem to have a softer sole so I wear mine with Superfeet green (except the new Adidas Tour 360 XLT which the materials are too stiff for me).

No offense to anyone but I think anyone can wear spikeless, just whether they want to commit. Swinging too fast or too hard is a myth, IMO. Not saying those people should wear spikeless, I think they should wear what is comfortable to them, I just think that is a reason they have made up in their head.

I used to be a "Spikes only" guy... For years I wouldn't even look at a spikeless shoe. Last year I picked up a pair of G/Fores and have been nothing but impressed with them. They grip as well or better than any spiked shoe I've ever owned... plus the added benefit of not having to change out spikes. I've not tried any other spikeless shoes lately but I'd say the Tech has improved immensely in recent years.

I went Spikeless about 3 years ago and am never going back. Comfort level is infinitely better. For reference, my driver SS is about 106-113 mph depending how my shoulder is doing on a given day. I'm not sure if they directly helped my swing at all, but at the very least the comfort and relaxation has indirectly made me feel better on the course, and when you feel better you play better.

Also, spikeless being bad in the wet is pretty much an antiquated notion now. When they first came out 5+ years ago and companies hadn't fully figured out the best way to make the soles grippy that was true, but any newer shoe performs just as well as a spiked shoe. The only advice I would give, passed on from a local pro, is avoid rounded/circlular nibs as they will grip less and wear more. Sharp corners/edges are your friend.

I just got a pair of G/Fores from a tee prize in a member/guest. Wore them for a practice round and they were pretty comfy and the grip was good. How long have you had yours? Does the bottom wear out?

I got mine mid-last summer. Can't put a round number on them but its a lot. Probably close to 50 plus practice at this point and a lot walking. The "Spikes" are definitely wearing down some but so far I have not noticed any reduction in traction yet.

Wow, one of those things you experience but don’t think about. I have worn out my Nike Winflo’s that I occasionally use in place of spiked shoes because of how much i get through the shot when I wear them. Now I am thinking of purchasing legit spikeless shoes.

The current split of tour pros is 60% spike and 40% spikeless (or at least according to a golf magazine article from a few months back), so there's clearly no major advantage or disadvantage to one or the other for the swing. Try both and wear what is most comfortable and convenient for you. I walk pretty much 100% of the time and prefer spikeless because of comfort by the end of a round (or multiple) - by the end of 36 most spikes start to feel pressure on my feet at the point of each spike, plus less fear of slipping on wet cart path or bridge. And I can wear them everywhere else before / after the round and drive in them, but none of my reasons have to do with swing performance.

I love shoes (of all kinds), so my list of golf shoes in rotation right now are:

Adidas: Adipure (spikeless), Adipower Boost 2 (spikeless), Crossknit 2.0 (spikeless), Tour 360 EQT Boa (spike)

Footjoy: Pro S/L Boa (spikeless), 1857's (spike)

Puma Ignite Proadapt (spike)

True Linkswear Knit (spikeless)

I wear my spikeless versions far more often than spiked. Spikes mostly only comes out when it's wet, or I'm trying to match an outfit hah. And I pull out the 1857's when I'm feeling super classy.

Adidas Boost sole > everything else for comfort. The crossknit 2.0 are my favorite for hot weather even though the velcro strap looks unconventional and goofy. I love boa for my wide toes and narrow heel, really helps secure it down so probably picking up a pair of the new adidas forgefiber boa here soon.

Footjoy Pro S/L are my least favorite, just not near as comfortable. True knits are pretty nice as well for warm weather comfort, but sore feet after a lot of walking that I never get with boost.

Pro Tip on adidas: you can usually set price alerts on amazon using camelcamelcamel.com and pick up some off the less popular colors for a steal, because their pricing algorithm starts heavily discounting options of the same product that don't sell as well until a purchase is made, even on new releases. Like the blue crossknit 3.0 are $104 right now vs $130-150 for the grey and black depending on size. Or the blue forefiber hit $150 (when Adidas is still barring any discount codes from being used) and by the time I had a chance to go order someone had bought a pair and the algorithm tripped them back to $200.
