Phil with 2 Drivers again @ US Open

Phil just posted a video talking about 2 drivers for US Open. I believe the last time he did that, he won the 06' Masters.......

I like the idea of Phil putting a shorter driver in the bag at Pebble.

I think it was only one day that he didnt play with a driver in 13. I may be wrong though.

Phil played the entire US Open, Scottish Open, and British Open without a driver in 2013. He finished 2nd 1st 1st

If the plan is indeed to keep 2 drivers at Pebble, I wonder how that changes the rest of the bag. It looks like he might have no fairway woods with the Rogue 3 iron as his longest club after the drivers. If the plan is no fairway I would think putting the 17 degree rogue hybrid in instead of the 3 iron makes more sense because of its potential use to hack out of us open rough

Also Phil didn't use a driver the first two rounds of the US Open at Torrey Pines. Put it in for the third round.

Yeah he played Houston with the 3 deep then had "Phrakenwood" at the Masters and Quail Hollow, then went back to the 3 Deep without a driver through to the PGA where he started with 3 Deep then put in the Optiforce 440 for the weekend rounds. He then finished the year playing SLDR at the Presidents Cup

The 2 Driver strategy made a failed return at the 2011 Masters while the no driver strategy made a failed return at the 2017 Open at Birkdale

Interesting that Tiger has taken something off his driver to get it in play and rely on his iron game. Phil still trying to give it the biggest whack as possible.

 

It's also a bit odd that he's using 2 drivers this week but doesn't plan to do it the rest of the year. Will be interesting to see what club he hits off the tee at Pebble the most. As mentioned, he almost won at Merion with just the 3 Deep, but this choice did seem to put him at a disadvantage on a few of the really long par 4s. At Pebble, Holes 2, 9, and 10 are fairly long and driver could also be a big advantage on 4, 14, and 18. Also, hitting a 3 Deep like club now means he's giving up more yardage to a lot of top players vs. 6 years ago (may not be viable now).
