Planning to play in STL in a couple weeks. We’ve already played Gateway and Annbriar is closed for a tournament. We’re limited to public courses and have narrowed it down to Crescent Farms, Stonewolf, or Tapawingo. Any of those stand taller than the rest?

My personal feeling is to eliminate Crescent Farms and focus on Stonewolf or Tapawingo. Tapawingo used to be my favorite public course in St Louis, but I have not been there in about 6 yrs, so not sure about conditions. Some others (near Crescent Farms) that get a lot of love is Aberdeen and Pevely Farms. But between Stonewolf and Tapawingo (provided both are in equal condition), I would choose Tapawingo just slightly over Stonewolf, but both are solid courses.

I'd say those 3 courses are all pretty much on the same level. What type of courses do you like? Crescent is more of a parkland course with tree lined fairways. Stonewolf and Tapawingo are both more routed through subdivisions. There are a good amount of blind shots and elevation changes at Stonewolf. Tapawingo has a lot of elevation changes on the Woodlands course and the first 3 holes of the Prairie course. Tapawingo is way overpriced imo. There are some memorable holes on the Woodlands course but there is also a lot of out of bounds and hazards so depending on how good your group is it can get frustrating if you're spraying it around.

Keep in mind it will still be winter conditions. Zoysia fairways and tee boxes will still be dormant and it's likely to be pretty wet. Tapawingo is in decent shape. You definitely won't be wowed by the conditions but I'd say they're generally pretty solid minus some sections of a few greens. I can't really speak on any conditions of Stonewolf or Crescent. I think Crescent converted to Zoysia fairways in the last year or two and I had heard it was a good improvement.

If your group would enjoy a links style course I would probably play Aberdeen which is located right by Crescent over any of the three you listed. It's a really good course and is usually in good condition. Another potential option is Missouri Bluffs. It's a Fazio design where most of the holes are framed by woods and has a handful of holes that play dramatically downhill. They did struggle with their greens a bit last year though.

My personal rankings would be Aberdeen, Missouri Bluffs, Crescent, Tapawingo & Stonewolf.

Crescent and stonewolf are definitely a step below Tapawingo. Tapawingo has 3 pretty different 9s that are all solid. Stonewolf is in the worst shape of the 3, you'd be better off at Far Oaks across the street. Better condition and more fun layout (in my opinion).

I like the Aberdeen and Missouri Bluffs recommendations. I'd play one of those 2, followed by Tapawingo/Far Oaks/Pevely Farms and lastly Crescent/Stone Wolf. If you just are interested in the 3 you listed then i think Tapawingo is miles better than the other 2.

I agree with burnsd427 Stone Wolf is one of my favorite courses its a thinking golf course witch I like. The first 4 holes will test your first shot placement. The first 4 holes goes, par 4, par 3, par 4 and par 4. On the first two par 4s I dont hit anything longer then a 3 iron on the 3rd par4 you can bust out a 2 hybrid or 5 wood if you want to get daring but 3 iron is the most I hit on the first 3 par 4s then the course opens up but then you have to deal with something like 70 bunkers. Its a hard course but fun because it makes you think.

> Since my original post as burnsd427 about Stonewolf, a lot has changed. The greens are excellent but the remaining traps are usually unplayable. Fairways are very thin with tight lines throughout.

> They have filled in at least 50% of the bunkers and have removed tons of trees. At what point is it not a Nicklaus course anymore.

Sounds like any Walters Golf Management course... Other than Gateway they do everything as cheap as they can and get as many golfers as possible. Running the courses into the ground.
