Different Style Golf Shoes Effecting Swing... Anyone ever notice?

Recommended Posts

I have two different Footjoys that I switch off between (Icons and DNA's) that are completely different in structure (I think) and it's kind of starting to mess with my head. They just feel completely different to me (or in my head) at set up. For instance, sometimes I find I have trouble adjusting to getting my weight consistently balanced and feet at a consistent width apart.

Is this insane? Or should I actually have golf shoes that are at least pretty similar in feel and build.

Not insane.

When you bare in mind most people are getting custom fit for clubs to 1/2” and sometimes 1/4” in length one way or the other then it should very logically follow a low profile spikeless is going to feel totally different than a spiked shoe that sits you up 1/2” higher off the ground with more heel to toe drop.

Find what makes your comfortable over the ball in terms of drop and profile and stick with it.

I've always felt weird bouncing between different shoes. To me, it's a sole thickness thing where I clearly feel taller in one pair versus another. I actually was going to post about this myself one day, but more along the lines of what Tour players think of it. Some guys switch styles very frequently and I wondered if it impacted their games at all. Most of my shoes now fit a certain profile, so it's less of an issue, but I have a pair of FJ's that I still own (but seldom wear now) that feel like platform shoes in comparison to the others.

I bought a completely different type of shoes one time compared to what I normally wear and first time on the range with them I got a horrable case of the shanks. It might have been a coincidence but I think the different type shoe was throwing off my balance.

You are not crazy. What most people experience is the "drop" being different from one model to the next. This is the angle and height that your heel is above your toes. Ex: 0 drop would be barefoot on the floor, where as a 10mm drop would be raising your heels up 10mm above your toes causing that descent angle. I have experienced this. 2 pair of my Nikes have a very low drop and my Boost have near 12mm. There is a definite distinct feel difference in my set up between the 2 models.

I have the same issue (or shall say experience) when I recently play in my Tour360 XT SL. I always wear Nike Lunar Command2, Vapor2 (Lunar) and Air Force 1G, and I feel all of them are lower to the ground. For my Adidas it’s high and I hit thin / top more often. I was curious whether it’s my swing or the shoes now I understand I’m not alone :)

Definitely.

But it’s hard to understand how it wouldn’t have an effect, even if minuscule.

If sometimes your feet are angled downwards toward the call and sometimes they aren’t, that’s going to affect balance, posture, and who knows what else.

I think it matters quite a lot when it comes to putting. If you stand with feet shoulder width apart, and you have a very consistent set up, then a shoe style can have a big affect on putting when you consider how specific putter fitting is. 1/4” - 1/2” in shoe height makes a 33 1/2” putter too short or a 34 1/2” putter too long.

Can you adjust yourself to either, or do you have a favorite pair?

I feel the same thing. I tend to "pull up" my putter while putting, when I'm in my Adidas. When I'm in Nike I never did it.

I noticed this during the time I used a belly putter. The height difference between a pair of original True tours and a classic Callaway saddle shoes was really noticeable in how the putter was anchored to my body.

I am not trying to give anyone ammo to blame their game on, but this absolutely a thing. I work for New Balance and have a bit of knowledge when it comes to the affect that drop can have on your stance. The Nike example is one I have experienced in the same models, as they have a much lower drop than even the TW71 I have. There is a difference. Some might even notice it in their weight shift, moving more towards their toes with a shoe with the higher drop.

Someone asked if you can have a 0 drop shoe and still be elevated. Absolutely. It does not matter your height off the ground in regards to the drop.
