My son just getting into that age. I’ve analyzed a half dozen or so events and come away surprised with the consistency with which some events produce “good scores” relative to rating while others consistently produce bad ones. We won’t make our decisions solely based upon this but it’s interesting, nonetheless.

If you’re top 10 in the class, yes you’re being looked at. Outside of that no it doesn’t matter at all

This makes sense - thanks

So when should players be mindful of rankings for recruiting/scouting purposes? I would have assumed 9th grade for sure, but is 8th grade on the radar for college coaches? If so, are they looking at top 50? Top 100?

Really depends on the player and their goals. Coaches know who the best 8th graders are in the country. Probably aren’t paying attention to the 200th ranked 8th grader. At the end of the day the rankings only matter when your skill level gets high enough for it to matter. So I’d say it matters if you are top 150 overall and trying to get into big invitationals. It matters for 11-12th graders who are top 1,200 or so overall. The right schedule can move you from 300 to 175.

If you want to go to a top program it matters far more than if you just wanna play at a good school. If you’re good enough and proactive you will get noticed. The only kids that have coaches reaching out to them unprompted are the best of the best.

Until you are top 1,000 I’d focus on getting better and shooting the best scores you can regardless of event.
