Why do you buy new clubs?

Like most responses, I just like to mess or tinker with stuff. I have the equipment (loft / lie machine, putter bending machine and shaft puller). It's all about the search. I have told friends I could be fitted for best equipment for my game and most likely would not keep it. I want to shoot the lowest possible but at same time, love to go to the range with different equipment. There is a local shop nearby that I can check out any used equipment for a couple of days and try it. That feeds the sickness but is also very enjoyable. I relate it to hunting. Whatever you hunt or if you do hunt, there is so much excitement looking for the trophy buck or whatever, but then for me, a letdown as soon as you take a successful shot. Its all about the hunt and what could be lurking in the woods.

its the never ending quest for perfection and confidence - wedges for me especially. Two new ones ordered this week alone. Its the part of my game i deem the weakest so ill keep going until i get comfortable. And once you go down the rabbit hole there really is no going back. Its mostly mental , i have a stock set that i try not to tinker with i was fitted for and then a back up set of blades that in one aspect i know i prob dont shoot as well but screw it when you middle one they feel great that id like to tinker with more, currently weighing up reshafting them and with all the shaft combo's out there its so hard to just be happy with what you have

Lets hope the RTX4's are as good as i hope !

I buy new clubs to fill a void in my life....or feed an addiction...or to keep golf fun...or to seek the ideal distance, spin and ball flight...or to find exactly what I'm wanting from a putter...or to use gift cards...or curiosity...or because of the deal. So basically a variety of reasons, each of which could vary depending on the club and situation.

I don't change clubs very often, but I do like to find bargains occasionally, as a low cost low risk way of trying something different.

Looking for that "it". I recently got tired of being aimless. So I got fitted for my irons and just got them. I'm done with looking in that category any further. Found "it" on my own with my hybrid(s) and putter. Driver, fairway, and wedges to go.

Improvement. If it doesn’t improve my game it gets binned. My bag is in a great place right now, but there are some tools I would like to have available in the toolbox should I need them.

Because how do I know what's currently in the bag is good, unless I try something else. Demo clubs are almost never at my spec and you don't really ever know how they will perform on the course unless you put it in the bag at spec. I'm trying to get better about it though. I still like to try different things. It helps me know what actually works.

I don’t typically buy “new” clubs as in still wrapped in plastic (except for wedges). The clubs I do buy are generally backups to my current irons or new wedges (which I might be due for soon) when the grooves lose bite.

I’ll often buy cheap secondhand clubs to experiment with for fun like a persimmon driver or Macgregor blades or clubs I always wanted in the 90s that are like 5 bucks now.

When it comes to woods tho I’m a ho. Trying to find something that works and hoping it’s the arrow not the Indian (it’s the Indian).

I get junk email from a lot of different retailers. Last summer, a MRC Diamana WB with whatever adapter and six grip choices installed, $80. This past February, '17 TM M1 440, $150. A real nice combo,......right now!

My handicap has basically flatlined at 2.5. No matter what clubs I put in the bag, my scores are going to be in the mid 70's. A logical-thinking person in this situation would then not spend any extra money on new equipment. Alas, when I start looking at shiny new stuff I stop thinking logically.

If it works don't change it. If you do, let's call a spade a spade, "Club ho." I change when wear becomes noticeably problematic.

I don't like changing irons or wedges or their shafts as it takes too long to get reacquainted and trust how they behave during play.

Graphite and or driver or 3wd doesn't have the same effect on me. Don't care a lick about the latest and greatest club technology either. I can play a decent round of golf using 2-LW, without driver, 3wd or putter in the bag. I can't do that in reverse.

OP - I buy new clubs to try to get to where your bag is. I think a lot of us can get 80-90% there, it's the final 10-20% we're searching for. Unfortunately no club in my bag is 'perfect'. And for me that's full confidence it will do exactly what I expect it to.

I am buying clubs because the cost to buy new shafts, new grips, and have them built is about 2/3 the price of a new set. So, paying an additional 33%, I might as well get a new set. I have tested this iron/ shaft combo a few different times and everything seems to fit me and stay within the yardage gaps. As for the driver shaft I just got, it is because the performance wasn't there.

ONLY to play better or maintain, especially as I age (67 now) and my swing speed declines, and ONLY when I've tested something new against what I already have. So driver every 4 years or so, irons less often than that. More often with FW's and hybrids as I try to close gaps at that end of the bag. I never put something in play in hopes that it will be better, especially in the age of Trackman.

And fwiw, I never EVER buy used or online anymore; too many people have messed with tipping shafts and hotmelt and the like, and counterfeits are way too good as well. I'd rather pay full retail, especially knowing that I'll be playing the club for three or four years, if not more; the per round difference isn't significant, but the peace of mind is.

I gave up on buying new long ago as I can find lots of good deals out there for stuff to try. Everything in my sig except my edels (wedding present to myself) I've put together for under $1k. I now waste money on archery equipment, woodworking tools and recently, photograhy... Besides, a shiny set of older blades does more for me than pretty well anything new (except maybe some Srixons)

I have been fit for clubs at places around me a couple times, indoors with a Trackman, and have not liked the results.

So I read a lot of reviews here, watch reviews on Youtube, and try and replace what I have with used clubs.

And I always go back to what I have, because it’s not better.

A couple years ago I had a really good summer. Didn’t change anything, got my handicap down to the lowest ever. I still have the same equipment now, but I have tried so many sets of irons already this year, tried too many shafts in my driver, confidence is not very high right now.

I almost have my house paid for, so I have been thinking that this winter I may treat myself to a good fitting for the entire bag. Maybe TXG or something.

I waste so much time looking, reading, watching, trying different equipment, it really is starting to bother me when I think about it. Changing equipment, that’s not properly fit, is not going to make a bit of difference in the scores I shoot.
