Father’s Day, what do you do?

Normally it's 18 holes with my pop's & Father-In-Law followed by the USO and ribeyes on the Weber charcoal grill but this year may be a little different. Pop's is laid up in the hospital with a hope of releasing him tomorrow but that doesn't leave much recovery time. It's also my little princesses 3rd birthday. Hoping to be a dew sweeper and get out early to leave the rest of the afternoon for birthday festivities.

Another key is to conspire with a group of golf-playing dads. If you can get a dad-foursome going, you can build a much stronger case for getting away. For a few years I was part of an "annual Father's Day round" that was actually set up buy a single guy with no kids, lol. He, his brothers, and his dad played an annual father's day round already, but invited some friend-fathers out to turn it from a 4 person family outing into a 16 person skins game. The peer pressure added a ton of negotiating leverage since it wasn't perceived as me just trying to get away.

Usually play golf on Saturday to avoid the crowds (as I play every Saturday, nothing different there). Then Sunday we usually get together and our older kids come by for dinner or a cookout then I settle in to watch the US Open and they leave me alone. Nice quiet day usually. As some earlier commenters stated enjoy the day with the little kids as the time flies by before you know it.

Updating my crazy month. Daughter turns 16 on Saturday so pretty much all day is taken up by that. Anniversary is also Saturday but my wife and I literally have no time to celebrate given everything else going on, and she’s actually mostly good with that this time. We will make it up somewhere, plus we already did an early anniversary dinner last weekend anyway. Sunday my son wants to go hit some balls, so we may do that. And I’d love to watch the US Open and I’m sure I’ll do some of that. BUT, we are planning a relatively long trip to the UK for July and really need to nail down hotels, etc. I really need to spend Sunday planning that trip, because I will be traveling all week to San Francisco after that and am crazy busy at work so have no time for much of anything else.

The point is, I just don’t see how we will squeeze much Father’s Day celebrating in. And I’m mostly fine with that. Mostly (except it does suck when you get 2 days a year but 1 never really happens in my case, so 1 day a year...and I’m the kind of person that doesn’t want anyone making a fuss over me. Secretly I do , of course, but I would never make someone feel that I expected it).

I have young young kids (20 months and 5 months) so I am new to Father's day. Late May to Mid June is also a very busy celebration month. Mother's day, Brother-in-Law's birthday, Mother-in-Law's birthday, Wedding Anniversary, and then Father's day comes late along with my Sister's birthday. So we tone it down for just about ever one of those celebrations because people get tired of trying to drum up special things. So when Father's day comes around, it's going to be a rather normal day but I get to pick what we get for dinner, and the nuclear family (just kids, wife, and I) will hang out in "Dad's room" watching the U.S. Open until all of them but me fall asleep.

When the kids get older I'm sure those dynamics will change but IF either of my kids show even the slightest interest in golf there will be a round somewhere that day.

Though my dream is to surprise my Dad with a "full fitting buy what you want" day followed by a weeklong golf trip to the North Carolina area.

I guess I’m a weirdo, but I wanna spend the day with my son. He’s 2 1/2 and I’ve never had so much fun with anyone. We spent the last week on Destin, heading to the airport in about an hour to head home and we had loads of fun at the beach, fishing, swimming and hanging out together. My wife stays at home with him and I think I’m jealous, all I want for Father’s Day is to be with my boy.
