Bird Attack!!!

Recommended Posts

Hey all, haven't been around much this year. Golf season is slow to start this year, not really into it yet, weather has been AWFUL!

Anyway, in my golf league last week, I hit a ball to the right near a creek. As I went to look for the ball, I was attacked by these god-awful mean birds:

A red-winged blackbird:

https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/red-winged-blackbird

Clearly they were nesting near the creek. Bird flew right at me, pecked me in the head, ran into my back twice! The bird flew away, then I went to search more (yeah, I'm up for some punishment!). Bird came back and attacked me again!

I'm virtually certain I went in the creek, but I couldn't get anywhere near the relief area that would be required. Would you say this falls under 16.2 "Dangerous Animal Condition"??

The issue I'm struggling with is that I would have to take relief first for the penalty, then relief for the dangerous animal situation, however the area where I had to drop was dangerous.

I had a post about exactly this a few years ago. What the USGA said is this.

If your ball is in the penalty area (hazard at the time) you can take free relief in the penalty area, no closer to the hole, from the dangerous situation. If this wouldn’t be possible, such as it’s all water, you’ll need to take relief, under penalty, from the penalty area. You can take relief from the PA in a safe spot from the dangerous situation.

Yikes, July of 2014. I’m old.

I might modify that slightly (may only be semantics) - if it's known or virtually certain that your ball is in the penalty area, in a dangerous situation, you can take free relief by dropping in a safe part of the penalty area, no closer to the hole. If there is no such position, you can take penalty relief from the penalty area and drop outside the penalty area as per normal procedure. If that drop still leaves you in a dangerous situation outside the penalty area, you can then take free relief for that dangerous situation. You are the judge of what alleviates the dangerous situation (using your integrity of course).

To be clear, you don’t have to literally drop outside the penalty area in a new place of danger before you take relief from the new place of danger. Knowing you will be in danger in the ordinarily prescribed relief area is all that is necessary to move to a safer location take the final drop.

Not to get all curmudgeon on you, but were you solo? I am very familiar with those birds and their antics. Typically what we will do is have someone stand behind you and hold up a club, and they stay away. If you are looking at them, they fly away, but if you turn your back, target acquired. I can't imagine this is a rules violation...

All birds on the golf course want to kill you, the ones that dont are happy to eat your guts after the other ones kill you. And they're all federally or internationally protected.

You suggested this a few years ago...and jokingly, I suggested it could be against the rules. The conclusion was that it is OK. Sawgrass asked the USGA about it and used a playful puppy instead of angry birds. :)

Cannot get it on the same line either. Besides, it should be bigger in order to see the emotion properly. Maybe we could write a Local Rule on that to GolfWRX ?

You have a better memory than me. The rules question part of it just popped into my head as I was typing. I do't even remember posting it, but I've certainly given that advice before. Too bad my regulars wouldn't help me a couple weeks ago...

A playful puppy would get a much different response.

I was not solo, but at one point I was looking right at the bird and he flew right for my head! Duck and cover!
