Get there early and grab a seat in one of the grandstands. That would be my advice. Think of canned sardines.

A lot of the fairways you can. But you have to remember that many of the holes are one-sided because of the ocean and there are a number of greens that spectators can’t get within 30 yards of. It’s a small piece of property on top of all that.

Waking the course early in the morning and then heading to 17 or 18 seems like a decent plan to me. I’ll be there Friday and I can hardly imagine what it’s going to be like trying to follow Tiger.

I was there in 2010 and it was a madhouse. Unless you’re in a grandstand, the viewing isn’t that great. My favorite spot was 3/4 of the way down the hill on number 7. Players are close and you can actually see the putting surface. Lots of times, the greens are either raised just enough that you can’t see much or they’ll be a bunker that limits vision. The high side of 16 green is also really good.

Dress in layers and be prepared to carry most of them most of the day. Foggy, windy and freezing turns into 80 and beautiful really quickly this time of year and Northern California has been warm the past week.

Go to the merchandise tent just inside the gates first while the selection is great and then check your shopping bag for free and pick it up at the end of the day. (If it’s already warmed up, stick your jacket in there, too.)

If you’re an American Express customer, they have a spot near the entrance where you can pick up a free little radio thing so that you can hear the coverage and actually follow the tournament. (It was AMEX when I was there, I’d guess it still is.)

I like sitting in the top of the grandstand on 7. You can see the 6th green,. Tee shots from the 8th. But it seems like this year, they don’t want you to stand on the top bench and Look over the rail.

Hopefully, once the tournament starts, they will open up some pathways that were closed during the practice rounds, but were open during previous US Opens there. Otherwise there could be gridlock in certain areas.

I would get there super early. I think I might just end up watching on TV. As others have said, Pebble isn’t the best for spectators. It’s too stretched out. But the US Open is still a great event. I’ve been to five Opens and am old, so that’s why I’m not as enthused as I should be about attending this weekend. So please don’t let me put you in a negative frame of mind. Enjoy.

P.S. Download the US Open app. It’s pretty helpful, but can be finicky sometimes.

AmEx is also giving out free binoculars this year. And charging stations around the course.

Much to my amazement, my wife and I walked in on Sunday and walked right up into the grandstand on 18. Ended up sitting in the second row and had a great time. It was definitely a great experience and can't wait to go back.
