AP2’s.........where have you been?!

Recommended Posts

I wanted to post this as I had done a lot of research and I think I got lucky. I’m currently a 12ish handicap and have been struggling to find irons that I like. I recently picked up a very gently used set of ap2s for cheap(714). They have regular dog r300 shafts in them and OMG. These clubs are amazing. I was very worried that they were going to be too much club for me as I am just a mid handicapper. These are simply amazing and it’s led me to believe you really have to not think about your handicap when looking for clubs. The clubs have to fit your eye and swing. The other big thing I think is shafts. I believe this is just as important as the club head. Anyway this is just my two cents and now I am so excited for the rest of the golf season as I see my handicap dropping very fast

714s are fantastic irons. 716 and 718 AP2 are a bit more forgiving and little bit longer than 714. But i don`t see any difference between 716 and 718 AP2, only cosmetics.

I went from 714 to 718 AP2's. I loved my 714's, but do not regret upgrading to 718's. Look and feel better to me. Just as confident I will hit my distance.

I found no love for the 714s and tried them multiple times. I thought the 716s were far better, for me, and the 718s with the leading edge seem like they could be better than all the rest. 714 cavity looks the best but I just never found the love everyone else has. Glad to hear they are working out, though, sometimes you stumble on something you might have never considered and they end up being the right ones!

718 have the top line shaved off at the back and the sole grind, both of which make it look smaller. All pretty similar though I thought the feel goes 718 > 716 > 714 which is not how many say it goes but that's what I felt. 714 felt hollow and not as solid as I like. 718 is softest but 716 has a nice soft click. Hit some amazing shots with both 718 and 716. Kind of regret moving away but liking the Pings I've got now.

Love my 716.

Got them on release and can’t see me getting rid of them ever really. The 714 feel the softest and the 718s look the best but not worth changing or upgrading.

Completely disagree they are a GI iron. The head dimensions are actually small and the lofts are traditional.

Only criticism is the distance. They aren’t the longest of clubs as they spin a fair bit but if you can handle that then cannot go wrong.

Nothing looks better when looking down at the ball.

The 714 works and the 718 are on point as well. I had the 716’s and they weren’t as good as the prior generations. If you like the AP2’s and the specific turf interaction you see with AP2’s you should really try the Srixon offerings as well.

I really think the 716 head wasn't bad at all. Felt better than 714 to me. 714 felt mushy dead and hollow. 718 was the best by far. The Srixons are nice but spin drastically lower than AP2 for me. Bent 2 weak they were still 500+ rpm lower but usually more.

Game Improvement irons? Majority of Titleist pro's play AP2's I seriously doubt they need GI. AP2's are basically a players cavity back which still demand great ball striking just a touch bigger and a touch more forgiving than the CB's which is due to the tungsten perimeter weighting.

While they are surprisingly forgiving, they are not remotely a GI iron. I personally prefer my iBlades, but despite me and my 716AP2’s not falling in love we did play some really good golf together. Play what works and gives you confidence.

Personally, I feel like the toe side forgiveness on the 718 is out of this world. I guess as a decent player they feel as forgiving as GI to me. My dad (who is a pretty awful ball striker) tried my 716s and could play them as easily as his 714 AP1. For my swing, I just don't find GI helps much. 718 probably a tad more forgiving than iBlade but I just LOVE the iBlade. Such a good iron.

AP2s are great and definitely very forgiving for a player type iron. I love mine but just hit them too high and spin too much. Never got along with them as much as I like the look and feel. Titleist dropped the ball on the new lineup and finally got me to order some jpx 919 tours.

Hi,

Are you using same shaft in your 718 AP2 as you did in your 714 AP2? I am currently gaming the 714 AP2 (KBS Tour shaft) but might upgrade to 718 AP2 before they stop production.

Thanks!

I'd go the same shaft. The 718 spin just a hair less. If you're hitting them well stick with it.

I also spin the AP2’s too much. If that wasn’t the case, they would be in my bag for sure.

No, I had Dynamic Gold S300 in the 714's. I switched to AMT Black R300. They launch higher and stop better for me on the greens.
