2nd day choice Western Washington

I have a group of 4 coming out to Seattle area and I am trying to figure out the 2nd day. Day 1 we are play chambers and home course. Day 2 we were planning on playing Golf mtn but they are doing qualifying on the Olympic course.

 

The 3 Alternatives would be

1. Either Salish Cliff's and Hawks Praire or 36 at hawks. (which course is best at hawks and how are conditions?)

2. Trophy lake and McCormick woods

3. Drive to Suncadia for 36 ( likely have a free place to stay that is 10 minutes away)

 

 

what does everyone think?

Man- that's tough. My take is with 1 and 2 you have one really great course and one "meh." I was just at Suncadia for Memorial Day weekend and the courses were in really great shape. Granted these are all based on my extremely unscientific personal opinion-

1. Salish is awesome. Hawks Prairie are both good, but nothing amazing. I prefer the Links over the Woodlands.

2. The changes to McCormick have made for a really fun layout now (they took out some ungodly amount of trees). Trophy Lake same as Hawks Prairie, good- not great.

It may very well boil down to the fact that I think the Oki courses in the area are so absurdly overpriced that I do my best to avoid them. It's a shame that Gold Mountain isn't doable- that's the best value in the state.

That said, with Chambers and Home Course both being links style, showing your friends something a little more NW woodlands style at Suncadia would be my suggestion. I was up there for Memorial Day and aside from one green (I believe it was 2 on Prospector) and maybe three tee boxes that are still recovering from being buried in snow, the course was in absolutely fantastic shape. I had played both courses a few years back and wasn't blown away, but after playing them in those conditions, I absolutely loved both courses. The resort itself (we did a Stay and Play) seemed to do a lot of little things that were really frustrating for somewhere that wants to claim itself as a "Premier Resort Destination," but if you're going for just the golf and have a place to stay, that's my rec over the other two by quite a bit.

I played mccormick years ago and you are saying it is better that trophy now? I thought the opposite 10 years ago.

I think it is, yeah. Trophy was never anything all that special to me. Keep in mind, I'm trying my best to let my disdain for Oki cloud my judgment too much.

I agree that oki isn't great inside of Washington. I was the same way when I lived there. I now think they are reasonably priced on a national level. They do an ok job of maintaining the course but not like a Troon or top notch operation. I just talked to my guys and they thing the 1.75 hr drive from Tacoma to the mountains is too long so I am running out of options. Salish Cliff's apparently only opens at 830 am? so we would have to play that 2nd and then drive directly to the airport. Hawks prairie has a tournament on the links course so I would have to play the woodlands course at 6am and then go to Salish.

 

So McCormack woods and either cascade course at Gold or Trophy lake.

 

Thoughts on that or any other suggestions around there?

Ah- didn't know you were coming from Tacoma. What about 36 at Chambers Day 1, then McCormick and Home Course Day 2? If walking 36 at Chambers is too much, I'd say McCormick and Cascade/Trophy Lake like you outline below.

my choice would be to do mccormick/trophy. mccormick is definitely a tough course since it's narrow but plenty of trees. trophy is a little of the same.

Salish would have been my choice but I don't really like hawks prairie.

we are considering just playing Salish that day now and hitting the casino. Salish seems to be the standout course in that area.

Why not Washington National followed by Chambers Bay for day 1. Day 2 Salish Cliff's and the Home Course.

Each pair is approximately 30 miles apart.

those are hell of a drive in between courses especially if you're playing 36.......

I actually am considering wa national on the way back from Salish to the airport. IT is only about 20 minutes out of the way so if time permits.
