I think he means those of a MacGregor/Wilson/Spalding vintage. Of those 3 only Wilson survives as a true clubmaker, Spalding and MacGregor are in-name-only storebrands. Hogan is a shell of it’s former self, etc.

Ping is wee bit too new I think. But perhaps “Acushnet???”

So, technically Callaway as they bought up Spalding/Hogan?? :) I get your point!

Ping has been around longer, at least with respect to golf clubs. Acushnet bought their way into the club market by purchasing Golfcraft in 1969.

Yes, I think Ping deserves to be counted in there. An American company that fought its way into the market with innovation, changed the market paradigm, continued to innovate, and is prepared to break with its traditions (the Blueprints), all while valuing its customers.

Funny thing about Achusnet and Golfcraft. I bought a set of Golfcraft Joe Kirkwood Personals (1969-ish) recently, and was surprised when I got them to see how close they were to my original Titleist Tour Models from 1979-80. Pretty much identical muscle.

I was going for pre-war (and yes that means Hogan doesn't count either). But I learned something new, namely that Ping is a lot older than I thought (1959) and that the K1 is 1969. And I thought the Acushnet Bullseye was older than that, but now I read that Acushnet bought that design in 1962. If they both count, then Ram must be included in the group, but they are nowadays another box store brand.

I did forget about Powerbilt in any event, but they didn't make it either!
