Testing was with a 5iron. ss was 93mph with the 5 iron (why can I only get 103mph from driver?? thats another story I guess). I didnt take notice of aoa numbers

"And i was loving the AVX", immediately after saying "a 3 piece ball works better", made it sound like you (or he) thought the AVX wasn't a 3 piece ball.

It illustrates a point I've just about quit bothering to make on these threads. People get all hung over needing a "low compression ball" or a "3-piece ball" or some other technical spec, based on finding some specific balls that do or don't work from them.

Obviously, friend Aussie doesn't do best with "a 3 piece ball", per se, right? Because AVX is 3-piece and it was not one of the best balls for him. He does best with a certain couple of balls that happen to have 3 piece construction.

I hate it when fitters or guys going blah-blah-blah on YouTube or people on forums parroting some marketing bumpf they read over-generalize from specific balls to this or that specific specification. There are 3pc balls that work great for me, others not so good. There are 4pc or 5pc balls that work great for me, others not so good. Same for "compression", you can build all sorts of different performance using low or high compression (or 3 or 4 or 5 pieces).

So my original point still stands. If the fitter tells you AVX doesn't work well for you and then turns around and says your swing requires "a 3pc ball", he is selling you a load of crud. Not someone to take seriously IMO.

This has been a FUN year. The 2019 TP-5x was my starter ball, then it was back to the ole-trusty 2017 XV 6, then it was the MTB-X. Of all these I think the MTB-X has been the longest of these balls off the driver (same course, same conditions). Next ball is the 2019 XV 6, just arrived thanks to the BOGO deal. Can't wait to hit that one...

As per one of the prior poster.. all yellow :)

Nice I wanted yellow XV but had a coupon for gg and bogo so was $38 out the door. Played my first round ever with a srixon ball and it so happens that it was my best. Bought 2 dozen on way home, going to play these for a while

It does get dirty like all the other matte balls. If it’s damp mud clings to it like all other matte balls. Never played the QST but have played the Project a and while they may feel a little different it’s not a huge difference. Project a spins a little more too.

So matte golf balls stay dirty ? You can't clean 'em up ? And mud sticks to matte balls more than to a traditionally covered ball ? Is that true ?

There’s undeniably way more effort in keeping a matte ball clean and it never seems to get back to having that new look. From my experience mud does adhere to them worse than a regular finish ball. I’ve only played the urethane matte balls so maybe those made of surlyn are different.

Plus +. I bought my wife Duo Soft Matte white balls. They're really pretty when they are new. But, they discolor easily and look bad. Not sure why the whole matte thing took off in the first place.

Confession. Much as my head says stick, I do like to mess around with different balls, a sleeve of these, a dozen of those. Surly, urethane, all makes all price points. I do notice differences in flight and feel, I do notice some stop a little quicker or don't roll as far. I can assess what "too soft" feels like off a driver, or just right feels like of the putter.....but none, absolutely none, make any real difference to my score. Theres something about getting a prov1 out the sleeve though, or finding a new one, that will never be surpassed, no matter how much TM, Callaway and Srixon try to mix things up :)

In answer though, my bag currently has about 8 Toursoft, 7 proV1 x, 6 Volvik vivid (white) and three new Callaway supersoft, marked identically, that I found in nine holes - bad day right there :)

The problem with golf is that (especially) once you reach a certain level there is NO equipment change you can make that will all of a sudden shave 3 shots off your scores. Or 2, or even 1. Not a ball, nor a wedge, nor a driver, nor a new set of irons.

And since no 2 shots are alike it's virtually impossible to say what "would have happened" had you hit a different club. Or ball.

So we move forward trying (and buying of course LOL) different "stuff" in the hope we'll trip over the "right" one - for exactly how long it's the right one, who knows ?

I think 2 shots is probably the upper limit of possible pure-equipment improvement. And that would only be in you replaced a frequently-used piece of equipment (driver, putter, ball, etc.) that was just spectacularly ill-suited to your game. Like an old SLDR driver for someone who hits it low and crooked or an 8802 putter for someone who can't find the middle of the face.

Human beings are amazingly flexible in their ability to eventually figure out a way to work around problems like a "wrong" club or ball. Given enough time and sufficient skill, even totally misfit equipment can still produce something close to the golfer's optimum performance.

I played for a decade-plus with small-headed "players cavity back" clubs and heavy Dynamic Gold shafts that were also too stiff for me. As much as I enjoy my modern SGI clubs and 100g R-flex shafts now it's not like I'm five shots better than I was with the unsuitable irons. Better ball or clubs can make the game more enjoyable and make shooting a decent score less effort. Not sure they can really lower your handicap much, though.

I guess I left that part out because I did say "(especially) once you reach a certain level". I think once one reaches a reasonably consistent level and has a certain amount of experience one should have already gotten rid of any piece that is ill fit.

But I probably should have added that. Thanks.

I would agree. I have several sets of irons, several drivers, woods, wedges, and putters. I generally shoot in the same score range no matter which clubs I put in the bag. Ball selection is no different either, as long as its has a urethane cover.

It's definitely more like, green isn't it? I liked those balls a lot but, the cover was just fragile and frail. I was always one hard wedge shot away from scarring the cover and then it became a shag ball.

I'm still farting around with a few balls this year. Made another eagle with a TP5 Pix, had a personal all time low round with a Callaway Chrome Tour Blue Truvis, still have a bunch of Kirklands, RZN Platinums, TP5 and 5x. I guess, once I'm through all them, I'll pick a winner.
