How can it be applied though? If Woods misses out on automatic and thinks its best he does captain duties only then I'm not sure who can apply pressure on him. Regardless it seems to me like Woods has always marched to the beat of his own drum when it comes to his playing schedule.

If he gets in on points, he'll play and delegate captains duties to some of his vices like Stricker. If not, I bet he picks someone else.

To be honest, his body would probably appreciate the fall season completely off after the Tour Championship. When you take a step back and look at what he's done the past 18 months, its nothing short of amazing.

He will presumably play at his own event the week before (along with in Japan in late-Oct). Earlier, he seemed to indicate that he wanted to make his own team and play, although I tend to agree that he either makes it on points and if not, picks someone else.

I'm also not sure if Phil plays (or lobbies for a spot) if he doesn't make it on points. Spieth may be the one that is in this year based on prior achievements.

For something he doesn't care about volunteering to be captain is an odd choice. The months of planning require much more time commitment that a week of playing does.

I agree with the consensus. If he makes it on points I feel like he feels obligated to play. I don't think he'll choose himself. This year he's been much more careful about how much he plays and I think he'll feel like his captaincy is more important that him contributing as a player.

I think this is the right time to end Phil's streak of playing on these teams. After some good golf early in the year he's been terrible for months. He's been very invested in the Ryder Cup process and if he's off of this team then he will likely will understand that his time has passed and won't push for a 2020 Ryder Cup spot at 50 years old on a long demanding golf course.

Spieth deserves the benefit of the doubt. He's in his mid 20s and has 3 majors and has been great at team events. He's liked by everybody. If this current form is who he is now vs 2014-17 then you reevaluate next year but he definitely deserves a pick in an off year. I honestly think though he plays his way in. He had a nice run going for a few weeks and I think he's getting close to finding it.

Dude, he can't refuse to be US Captain and avoid the PC babies, he has to do it.

Well he was offered the captaincy because he invested his time as an assistant captain in years where he could barely walk. I don't think he would would have done that without caring about the team events.

They are definitely pressed too close together. And I don’t know why ? I mean. Does anybody watch football anymore ?
