So the difference between Koepka in majors and normal events can't just be mental, right?

To win only when you think it's important as in the Major tournaments doesn't make any sense to me. The talent pool is getting deeper and deeper. Winning is going to become more and more difficult.

Play to win every time is idealistic. Fact is most athletes (not just pros) in sports that involve a regular grind (golf, baseball, basketball, tennis, etc) will phone it in a good amount.

I hope you're not trying to say that a guy who has won 4 majors in two years, with 2 second place finishes.....and is currently ranked #1 in the world, is not a true professional. It certainly isn't an accident and if he wasn't an extremely talented pro, it wouldn't have happened.

Why can't we appreciate a guy who figured out how to peak for the majors, when most others never figure out how to get it done over an entire career

But do you have a source for that? Pgatour.com/stats shows 27 missed cuts for Tiger (20 from 1997 on), and 19 for Brooks.

I wouldn’t say they phone it in, but golf is kind of like swimming, you are trying to build to your best times (golf) for when it matters most such as the Olympics (majors). They are still trying to improve and maximize growth in some aspect of their form and overall time. So the qualifier or trial is just as important as the final, but just for different reasons (it’s pointless to peak early).

Well "phoning it in" doesn't mean intentionally losing. No one does that. It just means not turning in the same intensity as you would for, as you say, events that matter more.

I think the approach today is much more "optimized" than before. Whereas yes, in they past, golfers might go all out in every event, there's a lot more attention paid both to the physical effects of constant play (trying to extend one's playing career) and being at your best form at the right moment (peaking correctly). If that means that certain events are approached with less focus than others, that's the athlete's lookout.

Brooks admitted in a post round interview he was pretty spent. It’s got to be exhausting competing for the win in every major. I’m sure he wants to perform better each week but his energy is low.
