So you’ve brought your B game to the course...and there’s 25mph winds

So I’ve been hitting my mid summer stride of upper 70s lower 80s scores of late but am still due a day where it’s just not as sharpe as other days. Today would have been that day except here in the Texas Panhandle we also have 20-25mph winds.

I can manage a round of B playing to keep it at a respectable score but when you push those winds into it I began to wonder why I play anymore.

What do you do when the conditions are working you over and your games not at its best...?

That works on about 1/4 of the holes here. A lot of our greens are elevated. I had 135 to Center. Up hill into the wind. Caught an 8 iron clean on a slower swing lower driving shot. As I began to strut it Came up short. SMH :s

It’s cliche, but you’ve got to play what you’ve got. Manage your misses. Don’t try to fix your swing on the course, just hit the shot you have. If you’re hitting it left, then play all day aiming right. In the wind the worst thing to do is get fancy. Just make solid strikes with whatever ball flight you have that day.

Oh, and GRIND around the greens.

Hope this helps.

Some of my golfing heroes are Tom Kite, Tiger Woods, Old Tom Morris, Seve, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Harvey Pennick.

Fully engage my imagination thinking that I'm trying to manage my game as well as I can trying to bring a score in to the clubhouse. It's the year 2000 I've got a 5 shot lead I'm leaking oil but David Duval on my six... Gotta bring this home!

Sometimes that doesn't work. Then I just think of getting fried food and try not to be a little

About 3 rounds ago I shot a round that improved my index (top 10 of my last 20 rounds) in 25mph winds. I didn't have my A game either. The only adjustments I made were to take an extra club (or 2) when I was into the wind, play for the center of the green as opposed to wherever the flag was, and make sure to aim to a point that if the wind caught my ball, my miss would be in a decent spot. I did have a couple more up and downs around the green than my usual, but I wasn't playing spectacular.

Basically just play conservatively.

It's gonna be a long day.........

Good ball striking day in the wind....fun

Bad ball striking day in the wind.....Not as fun.

Manage expectations, you might be in for a surprise.

When I figure it out I will let you know. Im a +hdcp and whenever my ball striking is off and the winds pick up there's not much you can do besides aim for the fattest part of the green and fairways. I find the easiest way to not score big numbers in the wind is to just get the ball in play. Easier said than done

I love playing in the wind, its an advantage over golfers that struggle with

Playing in the wind. The trick is, club selection, expectations, and attitude.

Make the wind your friend, and go play.

Play Golf.....Play Blades......Play Something Else.....Just Go Play.....

Even when I have my A game, heavy winds will increase my score. So alter your expectations, less-than-great playing, difficult conditions, maybe that's going to mean 10 strokes over your "net par" game, 6 or 8 over your average. That's life, that's golf, don't let it get to you. If its blowing 25 and I hit a green with a wedge, its a good shot. If I hit the shot I want, and the wind does unexpected things to the ball, that's OK, its still a good shot.

In that situation I stop in the pro shop before the round and buy an extra dozen balls.

I remember when I made my long-awaited first visit to Dornoch. I'd been working hard on my game and had managed for the first time in my life to develop a consistent draw, especially with the driver. I was looking forward to letting the new swing show its stuff at a world famous course.

Except in the last couple rounds before leaving home that hard draw was starting to cross the line into a hook. And then I arrive at the first tee of RDGC on a morning with winds 20-gusting-30-something. Four hours, 100-something strokes and 16 golf balls later a friend asked me what I thought of the course. I told him I had no idea whatsoever. All I'd seen of it was waist-high rough and gorse bushes.

When I played Kiawah in April of this year I only had 3 rounds under my belt for the season, so my A game was not even close to ready. And we played in 30-35 mph winds for the entire round. There were several times where I was clubbing up a full 4 clubs.

It was crazy, and I managed to pull an 86 out on the Ocean Course. Not my best score, but considering the conditions and the difficulty of the course I'm pretty happy with it. You just play the cards you're dealt, and find the best way to manage it.
