New Decade Multi-Compound vs Tour Velvet?

nkresl

Recommended Posts

*I'm sure there is a similar thread out there, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for*

I'm re-gripping my clubs for the new season and I'm just looking for some input on people who have played one or both, and also the benefits of both individually. Last year I played the tour wrap 2gs and hated them later on in the season because they seemed to be too tacky and they were pretty much straight rubber. I have the tour velvet stock titleist grips on my 3 vokeys and liked them well enough, but i notice that there is a lot of hype behind the multi-compounds. I haven't had a good chance to swing a club with a new multi-compound, only one that was really dried out and couldn't get an adequate feel for the grip. I think the tour velvets are cheaper, but saying that it is a long season, I want to make the right choice.

I've played both and my choice is multicompounds, just have a really good feel for me and if your worried about the money check out Sharpro Multicompounds, I've had them on my irons for the last 5 months and am a big fan of them, just add 2 extra wraps of tape if you go this route as they are a little thinner. Good luck man and hope this helps.

I'm the other way around.

I've played Tour Velvet for years and now play the Lamkin 3Gen

$10 vs. $5 a grip for Tour Velvets or $6 a grip for Lamkins.

I look at it this way, the only way to swing the club is by the grip so get the one that will work best for you.

I've played both and liked both. If it is between those two, I would probably choose the tour velvets because they are cheaper and I like to play with the logo down. But I would give the z-cords a try. They have the best of both worlds IMO.

I used the Tour Velvet for a season, I loved the feel, but they got slick on me, even thought I cleaned them after every round. I went to the NDMC last year, much better for me, they really keep their tackiness, and the feel is fantastic. But, as always, to each his own.

I prefer the NDMC to the Tour Velvet. The NDMC is easier on my hands. I picked up a set of 712 AP2's a few months ago, and have hit them 3-4 times indoors in a simulator since then. The stock Titleist Tour Velvet grips were definitely rougher on my hands than the NDMC. I've had the NDMC on all my clubs since they came out.

I prefer the NDMC, grips to just about all others.

I don't really get why people want the logo facing down, it's a point of reference for your hands on the club.

Try the online fitting Golf Pride has. Might help? I find the NDMC wear fast too. Went to the VDRs for the looks and shock absorbing. Love them!

I've been using NDMC for several years. I have tried to use the TV but it's just too soft for me (maybe it's just perception). Recently I have converted to the Tour Velvet Full Cord. It's hard to find in my area but I think it will be the grip for me long term.

I switched from Crosslines to NDMC.I switched my grip from a baseball style to an interlock about the same time but the Lamkins wore out after about 5 months for me and I've had the NDMC's on everything for almost 8 months with no thoughts on replacing them. I also rarely wipe them down as I would think using anything but maybe a mild soapy water would contribute to deterioration and getting slick too soon, rubber is a petroleum product and using any kind of solvent would accelerate them breaking down I suspect. It may seem a bit OCD but after using both, I've noticed the all black NDMC feel a bit softer that the white/black ones like Phil Mickelson uses.

I do because if the logo is just slightly off, it messes with my head. Plus for times when I want to open or close the club face I don't want to be distracted by a logo that isn't lined up right. But I am a mental midget...

I recently switched back to TV after reshafting my irons. I liked that NDMC gave me the option of going gloveless, which was nice for range sessions, but overall I prefer the feel of TV and its more low key color pattern.

Agree with the above comment, the Sharpros are an excellent option. I personally prefer the NDMC to the tour velvet also but the Sharpro multicompound is the same product (only very minor differences - many say they are actually better than NDMC) with a very different price tag. You'd be able to get your hands on some for cheaper than tour velvets I'd imagine. I have only found that they are one layer of tape thinner, but I was playing tour velvets prior to these.

I agree with this, especially for wedge shots, but mainly I think going logo down just looks really clean and simple.

Also, I'm trying to make sure I address the ball and reference the face angle before gripping, where in the past I would grip the club, then address the ball and adjust my stance accordingly. Something new to try.

To each his own.

I like to use the logo as a bit of a guide, particularly on those types of shots.

I've played both, and liked them both (in midsize). Currently playing the TV's. I think the TV's are a softer feel than the MC's, I always felt like the MC's felt like gripping a coarse tree trunk. Not that the rubber part was prone to give you blisters, but the pattern just felt strange. That said, my hands felt locked in. MC's are also better when it's damp - TV's can get real slick on early, dewy mornings or rainy days.

I've wanted to try out the Sharpro's, those are next on my list. OP, those might be worth consideration in competition with the classic TV, at least from a price perspective.

NDMC seem to dry out, get slick, and get HARD when they wear out. I have never attempted to resuscitate a set, anyone have any input on that?

Tour velvet are my go-to, only because they feel great when new and I replace grips 2x a year and they are inexpensive.

Also remember, the NDMC will add 1/8" to 1/4" of usable grip length because of their thick end cap.

ND Multi Comps hands down.

OP how often do you play? I found the little hexagon patterns on the 3gen deteriorated very quickly, but I play golf 3-5 days a week, and practice daily. The Multi Comps I switched to 3 months ago are only now showing wear on a couple clubs. Not trying to knock the 3gen, but if a plush grip is the way you want to go, I'd go Tour Velvet over the 3gen.

EDIT: I get free Lamkin grips and don't play them if that tells you anything.

The Tour velvet is probably the softest out of all of the grips I've tried. Of course, you can get softer, but I like that when it heats up, the velvet seems to get a little tacky.

You can also sand them if you want to change how they feel. I've had crosslines and the NDMC and both of those are harder. I think the Tour velvet is a bit better when its moist outside.

It kind of depends how hard you like your grips to feel.

NDMC, they cost more because theyre better. More technology and feel built-in. Added firmness makes club more stable (i.e. less torque). Cord area allows me to play w/o glove, which is my preference. I know at one time TV's were the standard, but now they just feel cheap
