Green Bay Area Courses

I'll be up in Green Bay around July 4th. 'Looking for a round at a decent public course. How do Brown County and Village Green stack up? Any others worth considering?

Nope. I'm a true blue public golfer. I've played 510 different courses, and only 7 have been private.

Your dates rule out Thornberry Creek. LPGA plays there over the holiday weekend.

Right. I'm in town to see the tournament on Friday, and Saturday afternoon. I'll likely play Brown Deer in Milwaukee on the drive up Thursday, and Washington County on Sunday. I'm looking for a decent course near town for a Saturday morning round.

Brown Co. is a very nice Muni. One of my favorites in the area. Typically in very good shape and fun to play. I would not hesitate to recommend it. The other public course I'd recommend is Royal St. Patrick's in Wrightstown, right off 41 in between Appleton and GB. Super easy to get to. It's a links style course, always in great shape, little to no bugs. No elevation change at all, but beautiful scultped/rolling fairways. Greens are smaller but not tiny and have a lot of subtle little breaks to them. Several holes with water lining one side of the fwy. Also one of my favorites in the area.

Arg, before Washington County opened, I think a lot of people would have had Brown County as the #2 muni in the state behind Brown Deer. I don't think you'd be disappointed with it...

 

Arg, just curious, and PM me if you prefer. How did you become an LPGA fan? Not picking on you, by any means. Just curious what you like about the women's game...

I became a fan after watching the 2009 ANA. It was an exciting finish with Brittany making eagle on the final hole to win the major. I learn a lot from watching them play. The average player hits the ball the same distance as me, and I can relate to that. Their tempo and course management are fantastic. On top of that the crowds are smaller, so one can actually see them up close, and interact with them. I've been to several PGA events, and it's a zoo.

 

I was really interested in Ai Miyazato. She became the World's #1 player in 2010. She's 5' 1", and drove the ball 240 yds. Her tempo was incredibly slow, but she really powered through the ball. She taught me that you don't have to rip the cover off the ball to play solid golf.

Dunno if this is too late but I am a BIG fan of Hilly Haven in DePere.

I'm on the 7th hole at Royal St Patrick's Golf Links. Fun course. It's a bit soft, and there's little wind. I bet it plays more like true links golf when it's drier and there's a stiff wind blowing. I couldn't get a tee time at Brown County, but this is enjoyable.

 

My only minor complaint at this point is the constant drone of traffic on I-41. If the course was a mile farther east it would be a sleepy little layout.

 

Edit: Of course a few holes later the wind picks up to 15 to 20 mph. Lol. I really need to keep quite until the round is over.

Glad you are enjoying it. Rain has been brutal this year in NE Wisconsin .... Played there last Friday and it was cart paths only, so we walked. Hopefully you can get off the path today, but ?? We were hammered with rain on the 4th for about an hour of and again overnight into Friday a.m. (about 30 mi. south of GB). One of my favorite courses to play, lots of fun.

It was cart path only on the 1st and 10th only. The conditions were soft, but playable.

Thanks for the recommendations. Brown County wouldn't give a single a tee time. I called late the day before, and they were booked solid the following morning (Saturday). Must be a popular place.

There were a couple of openings a few minutes after sunrise, and then late in the morning. I had to tee off before 7:30 am, and after walking 36 holes at Thornberry on Friday I couldn't drag my butt out of bed at the crack of dawn.
