Ping bags- have they sharply declined in quality and durability?

UPDATE:

I called and spoke with Ping today- the customer service is completely off the chain excellent!

They offered to replace the bag and walked me through the process.

WOW- I mean this phone call took like two minutes- you talk about having confidence that a company backs up its products!

I still have a green Ping Man hoofer from mid 90's- it's immaculate. I've had several Ping bags since then- a 4 Series, an LS, a Hoofer 14, and currently a Hoofer. The LS was not built very well, and was very flimsy.

The four series was ok-

The current Hoofer is all black- It has been used about 5 times- it was in storage along with a Sun Mountain 3/5 and a Srixon bag. The Ping padded parts have faded and the metal rivets on the base are all very rusted. I love the straps on the bag, but I guess I have become suspicious of the durability of Ping bags.

I believe this Hoofer is a 2016 or 2018- not sure which.

The Sun Mountain still looks new and I've used it a bunch and had it since 2014 I think.

I LOVE Ping and have two sets of Ping irons and would like to keep them in Ping bags-

Did I just get unlucky or is this a trend?

I feel the same way. I have a hoofer from the 90's that is still in great shape (black has faded from sun but that is it) . I purchased a Ping latitude as I was riding more but still wanted the ability to carry and it seemed to fit the bill nicely. The bag lasted 3 seasons before zippers started to break and the bag showed noticeable wear on the straps, sides, and pockets. The 90's Hoofer has not a single one of these issues. I just picked up my first Sun Mountain (actually an Under Armor bag manufactured by Sun Mountain) and am looking forward to seeing if its anymore durable. I almost feel like my expectations of how long a bag can last has been skewed due to the outstanding performance of the 1st Hoofer.

I still have my 90s canvas Hoofer at my in-laws and that thing is sturdy but I found the zippers are really sticky and take a lot of pulling to get them open/closed.

Have 3 “newer” Hoofers and a Latitude. Will say I feel like the stand mechanism is great to start with but wears easier. One of my bags leans to the right and falls at least once or twice a round if I’m not careful putting it down and pulling the leg out.

I also like the old 2-strap system better than the new Y-shape they have.

No problems with holes, tears, or zippers. The one I’ve used most and has a stand problem I’ve probably used 100+ rounds and it’s still functional.

Overall I won’t stray from this bag as I love the look and stand mechanism. At least until I stop walking the majority of my rounds.

If they made the canvas hoofer bag I bought in 1999, I’d buy another one... instead I’ll continue to use my old one.

Well, just make sure you're comparing apples to apples. No one wants (relatively) heavy canvas anymore. In order to drop a few pounds of weight, nylon wins the day. I don't think you're going to see anyone go back to that in a major OEM. That said, Seamus and several other companies have picked up that legacy. Maybe one day you'll see a crossover where someone like that does a retro rebuild. Sometimes still use my Ping L8+ circa 2000. Strap pads were THICK, stand still retracts like new, and is in great shape. Joy to walk with. Only downside is no dividers. Had about 5-6 Hoofers and collegiate (mascot?) bags between 2006-2012.. very thin/uncomfortable straps, and everyone on our teams had stand issues. Constantly sending back for repairs in that era. I want to try Ping again but nervous with past stand issues. My current Titleist/Sunmountain stand is solid, but the material sure is thin and the straps are very uncomfortable compared to vintage Ping. **Very curious about modern Ping quality vs mid/late 2000s (not good) vs 90s/2000 era (great) IMO**

Ping sent a hoofer lite which I requested- It looks great and there is no tangle at all.

We will see how the bag holds up- but the fit and finish look great- and the full length dividers seem to eliminate the club tangle that was present on my 2017 Hoofer

Quality has certainly gone downhill - still using my OG Ping Moon Bag which has no real wear marks, and it much have logged 500+ rounds!

Just purchased a PING Hoofer last week and have had no issues with tangling. Love the bag in all black and the storage is great. Love the rain cover holder and magnetic pouch in the front. Not to mention the bag is much lighter than previous models I believe.

yeah I see a difference in this one I just received vs the last two I had- there is NO club tangle at all and everything is just very simple

Yes, Ping Hoofer Lite is awful. The pockets are impossible to get in and out, I exchanged it and bought the Taylormade FT lite and it's waaaaayyyy better

Half a season with my Ping Hoofer and the straps with the SensorCool technology (whatever that is) has already parted. I carry from the bag room to the range and back. Carried 9 holes with it once this season. Bought it at the club pro shop, pointed it out to the pro who said he'd follow up with Ping. We'll see.

My longtime favorite carry bag was my 2000ish Hoofer that I had to retire 10 years ago when the divider fabric was torn from use. I have tried Titleist, SM and Ping stand bags since and the new TaylorMade FT is everything that my old Hoofer was. I was surprised by how much I like carrying this golf bag. Not sure what happened with the Ping design group, but their bags are no longer my first choice.

I have a Sun Mountain 3/5 from 2014 that is still kicking!

Mabye it's just me, but it feels like the new Hoofers are heavier than the old ones.

I have a 19 Hoofer and a 16 Hoofer (last with the big Ping logo) and the 16 is better is every way. Less tangle, a real towel loop and seems lighter. Currently bidding on a backup on Ebay and want to sell the 19.

Ripped one of the center dividers out of my 16 Hoofer 14 way after 2 months. Ping immediately replaced it with a brand new one that seems to be holding up. Not a huge fan of the straps as I think they are too narrow compared to my sons Titleist carry bag. Also, the 14 way is a nightmare to get midsize grips in and out of.

I was pretty down on recent Ping bags but the new Hoofer lite they sent is fantastic in every way. Great fit and finish- minimal club tangle. The straps are different but my jury is still out on that- I love the Hoofer lite so far- it's the replacement they sent directly to me

I have a hoofer that I bought about a year ago and have had zero problems with it. The straps work fine (I dont walk but they get used going from car to cart a bunch), zippers all work perfect, etc...only issue is it has faded but I play a lot of golf so that is expected.

 

I wish they would change up the configuration, and the pockets a bit. For the configuration, I wish they would go back to 2008ish setup where it was one up top, two in the middle, and two in the bottom (not 2 up top and middle, and one bottom). I also wish the apparel pocket was bigger. I used to be able to fit a rain jacket, rain pants, a towel, and a bunch of gloves in the old one but now its a jam to get the rain suit in there. I do like the cart strap slot, its nice to get to everything without moving the cart strap all over.

Surprised people are down on the recent hoofers. Mine is rock solid. Quality is top notch. Club tangle is the only complaint but that’s always been the case.

I bought a couple of the Mascot bags this past winter on closeout. I believe they are most alike to the 4 Series from a few years ago. So far so good in my opinion. Love the minimalist styling. Club tangle is still a bit of an issue as the dividers aren't full length but it carries very well, meaning the weight is distributed well side to side. Often times I'll carry it with 10-12 clubs and it's perfect for those types of rounds Also fits well on my Clicgear cart. We'll see in terms of durability as I'm really only half a season into using it.

I've had problems with several companies and believe quality control has declined. Had issues with Vessel, Ping and Titleist - my wife said I must be rough with my bags, lol!

I just switched to the 2019 hoofer. My prior hoofer was about 5 years old and had faded out too bad to keep in use. Other than the fading, nothing was wrong with it. The pockets on the 2019 are driving me crazy. The apparel pocket is way too small and the one above it is a pain to use. This bag may soon appear on BST.

I've been using a DLX for about 3 months and haven't had any issues with it. Not to sure on any of their carry bags as I'm still using an older Callaway for that.
