Remembering All Your Shots for 18 Holes (Even Yardage)

msg

Recommended Posts

I can remember every shot of every round for a day or two afterwards.

My brain has been 'altered' (made less effective) by decades of dope smoking and I can barely remember mundane day to day things...as in, some days I have to give it a good long pause before I recall what I ate for dinner the night before.

If I'm passionate about it then it sticks in there nice and clear for a good long while. To summarize, my memory is now full of golf shots and song lyrics more than anything else!

I used that spreadsheet that was developed by a WRX member for a couple years but gave it up because it was tedious, during and after the round (data entry). So I went a year and tried to pace off my putts but never did. Saw my putting get worse. Now I use Golf Metrics and putt lights out and it keeps my head in the game.

Don't try to remember shots and probably could remember all of them If I tried but who wants to?

Back in Watson's heyday, I remember him in the scoring tent while watch on TV as he called off all his hole scores before signing his card. Thought that was amazing. Then I tried it, yeah, not as amazing as I thought as I didn't have any problem.

Yeah, I've tried to get into Game Golf twice now but you're right that it seems a lot of effort. Also it didn't really tell me much that I didn't already know. I tried their new 'contactless' system but it flat out didn't work and their support - though friendly - was pretty useless.

I can nearly always remember my rounds shot by shot. I don't remember yardages or clubs used but I can walk back through the round in my mind and have a pretty good idea where on the course each shot was taken from. Typically after every round I do go back through it hole by hole categorising each hole as good or bad. For the bad ones I make a note of which club/shot type let me down. Then I can look at the result and see where I need to do some work.

The only rounds I struggle to remember are practice rounds where I took 'redos' (understandable that I don't remember them) and particularly bad rounds. In the latter case I don't think it's a form of denial. Those rounds started badly and never got good so I actually think I just wasn't paying attention during the round.

But while actually playing golf I forget about (or at least don't care about) prior shots. I will usually be aware if I'm playing particularly well or badly because when I enter my score on my GPS it'll tell me how much over I am but when I step up to the ball I'm pretty much only thinking about that shot.

Not for very long. Shots I remember, certain holes played I remember, many I've remembered since I was 10 or 11 as special memories, but just not whole rounds. Sometimes if I'm trying to get to sleep I'll replay a round from the day or imagine one to work on course strategy - lucky to get to the fourth hole, lol - no wonder my mental game is weak.

Interesting comment above - song lyrics - wouldn't even try to count the hundreds upon hundreds stuck in my brain.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that you are concentrating, or should be, on all your shots so they actually register in your memory. When certain people ask you questions and you're not paying attention to them, it doesn't register in your memory unless you have that gift.

Amazing how the mind works, ride home is usually spent analyzing each shot and even recalling what I was thinking. But yet my buddy cant remember how many shots he took on a short par 4 as he's incorrectly marking a 5.

Pretty much the opposite here. I often can't remember 3 holes back, and I have no idea what any other player shot on any hole in my group. I don't work on being that way, it simply is the way that I am wired. I am very much in the moment on the golf course. I certainly know where my misses have been for a round or even weeks, and I know what is working. When I am playing well, I am managing my current tendencies including strengths and weaknesses. Today was another 75, leaving 4 putts no more than 2 inches short each. That is frustrating, but I was hitting the ball for the most part where I wanted. I can't recall specifics holes of the round, but I know I never short sided myself and I only missed one fairway. I did under club a few shots, but that is mostly because short was better than long on those holes.

Interesting thread!

I used to be able to come home after a round and record every shot in a spread sheet based on memory. The club, the distance and outcome. Not anymore. I hit my 50's (53 now) and I can only remember about 80% of them at best. Now I use a 5x7 notepad and record them as I play.

I’m 61-years old and can still remember all the details of every shot I’ve hit in a round. I’ve habitually reconstructed every round I’ve played upon completion for most of my adult life. I’m willing to bet, most golfers can remember the course layout of every course they’ve played, Recently we played a new course for me, but my buddy had played it once, about 10-years ago. As we’re driving to the course, he’s giving us a hole by hole description and he was spot on!

Cool I’m not a freak!

Plenty of us can replay the entire round in our heads! I fill out my stats after a round when I get home down to the length of putt. I can tell everyone in the group what they got on a hole if they “forget”. I could speak about which way the wind was blowing for any shot tonight or how a lie was on a certain hole if you picked a random one.

I remember reading about playing golf in your mind to help you sleep once but I ended up playing all 18 holes and then getting angry about the shots I missed haha. Not a good idea for our types.

I played at Royal Dornoch a few weeks ago and replayed every shot after the round, then marked it on the shot saver with where I played my shots from, yardage and club. Even pin positions and number of putts on each green. I sometimes think I'm a genius, but we all must be geniuses! Wife just thinks I'm crazy and asks why I can't remember more important stuff.
