Ever just have an unusually bad day at the course?

Couldn't have said it better brother. This is exactly what happens. I play every weekend so by the time the following week comes after a poor round, I've forgotten the past round and I seem to play outstandingly better. Golf is a wonderfully evil sport. It loves to test your patience.

...and another one today. My bad rounds are becoming less and less unusual.

I've tried this for giggles, but it actually really does force you to keep form. Gotta keep those wrists firm!

Played in a one day member-member 2 man best ball money match 2 years ago. I was a 3.5 index, guy I was playing with was a 2.0 index. I shoot a sweet 95. I didn’t have one three putt, but I did have 4 lost ball/OB, two hazard penalties, one ball lodged in the roots of a tree, and was in about 12 sand traps that day. (Most were fried egg or buried in the lip lies).

I also sprained my ankle looking for a ball.

I also ripped my shirt looking for a different ball.

I also cut my face and was bleeding into a towel while looking for yet a different ball.

I was lucky to make it off the course alive. Guy I was playing with said he’d never seen anything like it (collection of bad bounces, breaks and odd crap that happened) and wouldn’t have blamed me for quitting on the back nine.

It was horrible. I think I shot even par the next week on the same course... lol. Golf.

Hmm. A rough but typical day in a comp for me. 49 on the front, 47 on the back. I lost three balls and my putting was rubbish but I kept it below 100 so I probably shouldn't complain. At least my handicap is unlikely to change since it was a handful of bad holes with the rest being okay.

Oh yeah. I'm currently a 9 and consistently play to that - and I'm normally a decent scrambler when things get sideways and can salvage a not totally disastrous day - but played a round not too long ago where literally everything went wrong and carded a very impressive 97.

It was a new-to-me course with some tight fairway OB areas - of which I found 4 - I couldn't make a putt outside of 3 feet and just as I thought things were calming down late on the back 9; fired my tee shot on 18 into the ONE water hazard on the whole damn course.

That was a very unpleasant day.

Not the worst day I've ever had, but the other night for my 9 hole league was far from stellar.

First hole, I thought I smashed a pretty good drive. The hole requires that you be on the right side of the fairway for the approach shot. I was heading towards the right edge of the fairway, and the ball lands on the right edge and takes one of the worst kicks I have ever seen 90 degrees right, and into the trees. Truly head scratching. There were a handful of other bad breaks during the round, but I'll spare the details.

After the round I am walking out of the club, and as I am walking by the deck the wind kicks up and blows one of the awnings. The awning had a ton of water on it that flew up and landed directly on to me. As I stood there soaked wondering what the heck had just happened, it started to pour. Now I am running to my car completely drenched.

Sounds exactly like me..... No great highs or lows..... Now Putting I don't get hung up over those 3'ers (yep don't play it down :D ). But I had a really indifferent 5-7 rounds and watched my HC go up 2..... Just very few good holes, but I don't have too many blow-ups either. Just bad shots for the most part.

Have turned it around and now playing some of my best golf & hope it continues. Much better around the green of late.

I'm a slow learner...shot 48, 4 nights in a row at my monday night men's 9.

I know better but I have to remember to not follow a poor shot with a stupid shot.

Monday past-short on the fairway, dogleg left. Should have taken a shorter iron past the trees...that cost me an extra stroke. Two holes later-dogleg right, same thing-trees are not 90% air.

Lost two more being cute around the greens-trying to salvage a bogey after those tree shots. Gotta remember, I'm not that good...pitch to the middle of the green

I'm there at the moment. Haven't hit a ball for three weeks, in Florida at the moment and it's the first time I've not had my clubs with me because I'm seriously considering chucking it.

I was at a short game clinic in January as last season I dropped the most shots around the green from 40 yards and in which surprised me but I thought I would try and address it.

Started the season all guns blazing, with scores of -2, -1 and +2 first three competitions. Things levelled off as they usually do but recently it's gone completely to hell.

I played an invitational and I was that bad one of the guys in the group asked my partner if I'd ever played golf before. Played the back 9 in +2 so managed to recover but I went out again the next week and I fatted, thinned, slice, shanked the ball on every shot to the point I walked off because I had no idea what was going on.

Went straight to my coach and was hitting the ball fine, no issues. Back on the course... absolutely rubbish.

Now I took the game up in my 30s and it's never come naturally but I'm questioning whether or not it's worth it.

Everyone at the club and in my league wants me to keep going but I've honestly never played another sport like it where it can go so completely wrong from time to time.

How do you folks cope and what camp would you be in? Compete or quit?

So frustrating.

I played four days at Pinehurst with a double hernia that got operated on right after I got back. I couldn't swing to save my life but I wasn't going to pass up the trip! I had a great time otherwise. Didn't really care that I couldn't swing - I'm at Pinehurst! - and my intestine needed constant rearranging so I had a good excuse.

I'm repaired now. Have taken a month off after surgery and will be back at the course tomorrow.

I think we're all there from time to time. I had that just today. This weekend, Im playing in a tournament at the course that I used to play frequently. Granted, it was my first tournament, so I was a little nervous and Im used to play from the white tees but had to play from the black tees but still...I shot a 120. My average the past couple years has been in the mid 80s, so I was a bit disappointed but round 2 is tomorrow and now Im so far out of it that I can just go tomorrow, knowing that I have nothing to lose and cant let it fly without a care.

Even still, I felt bad for the guys I was grouped with because they must have been thinking, "what is this yahoo doing here???"

I died laughing reading this. The next time I'm having a bad day on the course I'll think of this and tell myself it could be worse.

Of course!

I'm an 11.4 and I am crazy consistent. Every round this year has been an 86 or 87, every single round. Then last week I shoot 82 at the Warren Course at Notre Dame, they just finished up the Senior US Open the week prior. Not crazy tough but challenging. I then proceed to shoot 94 at a local course that is not nearly as tough. I could figure out a damn thing. That is until 18, of course, where my drive straightens out and I hit an iron pretty close.

Been a difficult year of golf for Jack Pearsall. He’s been playing three different cb iron sets each with very different shafts: Fcm Rifles 5.0, s200 and nippon 1050gh stiffs. He’s been dancing between three different putters, now just two. His woods are fine. His hybrid and DIs are fine. He’s thinking he should go to Joe Kwok and just find out which one has the goods or is a fourth set the solution? He is just a bit lost. He has not put together a full 18 where he hasn’t faltered. His scoring has been poor, for him.

He drives the ball better than ever. His 3 wood is a beast, he should be tearing it up. But he isn’t. Inconsistencies he has really not had before, it’s just gotten beyond that whole “it’s a bad day, forget about it”. Not sure but he thinks he’s become muddled in the minutiae, ground down by the relentless tinkering. He also has been somewhat of a chucklehead in terms of his game management and related course shot selections.

He still has fun but...his game isn’t sharp, just momentary instances of brilliance followed by or accompanied by weirdness. It’s vexing.
