PGA Tour Live on NBC or Amazon

I started the year with NBC Sports Gold and switched to Amazon after my subscription was up a few months ago. From a purely content/stream reliability perspective on the streams, they are pretty much a wash. Save for the first tournament that NBC Sports Gold hosted (which I half-expected to happen), I had basically no significant issues with either. From that perspective, it pretty much comes down to what features/device support you need and how well you like the interface.

So the following is all my opinion, which of course might differ significantly from another person:

I stream videos in the following ways: Android phone, web browser, and Roku. Any streaming service that supports all of these is a plus -- both NBC and Amazon support them. I consider Chromecast as an acceptable alternative to Roku as I have both connected to my TVs.

Let me preface this by saying that the time PGA Tour Live started streaming events through NBC Sports Gold, NBC Sports was also trying to consolidate "NBC Sports" and "NBC Sports Gold" into a single app, which was a bit rocky. **It is very possible/likely that any issues I have identified with NBC Sports Gold have since been addressed**, but they were what led me to transition. I greatly disliked the NBC Sports Gold interface, but reliability and available features was an improvement over the dedicated PGA Tour Live app last year. The "Speed Rounds" at the time were inaccessible on the Roku channel, but available in the Android app. I never could get the filters to "save" so that it would only show me golf content. So I either needed to manually set filters or sift through a bunch of extra crap to find what I wanted. Perhaps most annoying though, which is something I encountered with the web, Android, and Roku interfaces is that I would often get locked out of the streams and need to log back in multiple times before it would finally work.

I'm not a fan of Amazon Prime's interface (honestly, I can't think of a streaming service's interface that I "like", but Amazon's is better than others, including NBC Sports Gold). It's a more well-established streaming service and there are some minor features that are nice where it is better than NBC Sports Gold. The Amazon Prime Video app supports picture in picture on Android, so I can watch a video while doing other stuff on my phone. The Roku channel is also reliable. When watching through a web browser, video scales automatically as you resize the window (you CAN do this with NBC Sports Gold, but it's less intuitive as you need to resize the window them zoom/scroll until you get the video the size you want).

I don't use Amazon Channels for anything else and don't really watch much else on Prime, so that wasn't really an advantage for me, but it could make it easier for others who stream other Prime/Channels content regularly.

I had nbc and hated it. Amazon version is vastly superior. Everything from the app to view it on , just in a finding your way around kind of way to the quality of stream itself. For some reason with nbc it always has issues playing , and the icon to play or find the latest round kept moving. I’d never go back.

Short answer is Amazon all day and every day....

Long answer (I documented this when the switch over happened earlier this year): I started out the year purchasing NBC Gold app and was immediately disappointed. I used to watch most of the content on the original PGA Tour Live on either my iPad or a computer. The PGA Tour Live app supported both PiP (Picture in Picture) on the iPad and also the ability to resize a separate browser window. Both of these options allowed me to have a small window open while doing other things. The NBC Gold iPad app was full of adds and also the web interface was Flash based and you couldn't resize the window. Both so that all of the ads could be in the viewing area of the window. The NBC App also didn't support full 1080P HDMI output. This was needed for TVs that didn't have Roku or any other way to watch the NBC app.

The Amazon app and web interface is much cleaner and supports both PiP and Resizing of the viewing window.

Bump!

Doing some fall/winter work. Had cancelled my Amazon PGA Tour live, but just renewed for the $9.95 a month. Going to analyze pro swings etc. it’s great because you can go back and watch ALOT of tournaments. Then cancel again end of winter.

One complaint I have is that they have gone to a only 2 day coverage. When I think it used to be 4 days.

And one of their cameras is messed up and show pixelated images . Usually the far off shot. Your tv is not messed up, it’s their camera.

IIRC the 2-day coverage was only for certain events at the end of last season.
