Without seeing anything, check your ball position. Easy to get it too far back, leading to you getting steep and sticking it in the ground. Good luck working it out. I am sure it is something small causing the issue.

Fair question and let me clarify. I rarely ever try to hit a wedge 100% but there are times where I’m hitting wedges say between 75% - 85% and that’s where the trouble currently lies

I’d be thrilled if it were just a setup fault. Hopefully I can get some video this week.

Yes check setup first!

And correct me if I'm wrong, but were you someone trying to add left wrist flexion in transition?

Yes, that would be correct. Left wrist flexion seemed a bit awkward so I started to focus more on right wrist extension. This game is difficult.

Sorry ive got a million questions.... But.....

Is your GAP wedge the same weight as the other wedges? How about swing weight? Shaft? Ect?

If its not ball position, check that transition.

I think they are all pretty close. Same head set and same shafts in each. I think shaft length from 60* to 50* is 1/4 inch. Can’t remember swing weights but around D4 if I’m remembering correctly

Ok, was just curious if a difference in wedges might have been influencing something. Doesnt sound like it.

Backing up a little though.... You talk a lot about not scoring well. Now add in a poor showing with the wedges, and its cant be great. How often do you take an extra club or 2 on 110yard and less shots and flight one into the green?

Probably not often enough. I can honestly say that I attempt to hit a full 100% wedge VERY rarely. But taking a an extra club or two is something I should consider more. For example, 54* is good for about 117 yards for me. If I had 110 I’d usually select 54* but maybe I should start practicing that shot with my gap.

No divots with wedges. Precision not power. Cast pattern. Extend that trail arm early, keep the retail shoulder higher, deliver bounce with a bit of shaft lean.

I take some flak for this but I had that problem and adjusted my wedge “system” to remove the big miss. For 90 yards I hit a 3/4 knockdown high spin PW lol. For 100-105 I do the same shot with a 9i. It’s almost impossible to screw up. In all aspects of my game I hate hitting the ball high. 50 yards out I use a straight arm putting stroke with my PW. Again, I can’t screw it up. I recently played around with more loft and a few of the best guys at my course called me crazy. One even is experimenting with my system. My game revolves around eliminating the big miss. Since making peace with using this system my up and down percentage has continued to rise. Just something to try if you think it might help but again it’s not popular here

Guy, timely videos. Thank you for sharing.

It’s somewhat ironic but my wedge play around the greens and out of the sand is probably the best part of my game right now... it’s from like 40 yards+ where things get dicey. Really need that shallow feeling.

If you’re using PW and 9i for those shots that means you have room in the bag for 2 or 3 drivers! Jk - you’ve found a shot that works for you, exactly what I need now.

Today I try to feel like my wedge swings were strictly Steve Stricker in mechanics and feel. I did hit some very nice shots doing this but there were others I screwed up royally.

I personally love taking the extra club (or more). My full PW is about 135, I use it for shots regularly down to about 90. Last time I hit a full SW I was carrying about 100, but I really use it from about 90 down to 70 yards regularly. I'm rarely in the window of 60-70 yards, but still usually wont use my lob wedge until I'm 60 yards or less.

Playing this way brings the ball in a touch lower and keeps me from spinning it way too much. These shots usually drop and stop. It's a truly rare occasion that I need to rip a shot back. My directional control is usually very good too.

Bonus hitting these shots it helps keep rhythm and transition smooth.

Trust your feelings Ebrasmus. If you think you’re getting steep and transition is poor with wedges, you’re probably right. Everything you’re describing matches that.

It’s so much easier with the shorter clubs to get steep. Shallow it out, with a really controlled, smooth swing, and you’ll start stuffing wedges again.

As an aside, it’s great to hear that you and the Mrs. are on a reconciliatory path. I’m not sure there are many things more stressful than a breakdown of a marriage, so I’m happy for you guys. I’m sure that stress somewhat off your plate will do wonders for your game and life.

Lucky for you, the only galleries you have are in your head...., (I kid I kid)

Contrary to popular belief, chicks don't dig the wedge ripping back 15 yards, nor do they dig the long ball. What chicks really dig is cashing tour checks. ?

Thank you, PTM. I’m hoping to never deal with those stresses ever again.

You have obviously not played golf in Wisconsin. I don't know where they come from or where they go after but if I had a nickel for every time I was flashed after driving a par 4 green or snapping one back 20'...

For example, 54* is good for about 117 yards for me. If I had 110 I’d usually select 54* but maybe I should start practicing that shot with my gap.

Last time I hit a full SW I was carrying about 100, but I really use it from about 90 down to 70 yards regularly. I'm rarely in the window of 60-70 yards, but still usually wont use my lob wedge until I'm 60 yards or less.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alright so I’d like to hear some opinions on a feel vs real scenario. The last couple of weeks I’ve been trying to feel like my shoulders are rotating on a steeper plane in the backswing. Feeling like I get more left side bend. A combination of that and getting pressure left sooner feels like a much more powerful swing to me. Does this make sense? Anyone else ever felt like you got your shoulders rotating too flat?

Game update: short game continues to be the best part of my game by far. I’m having to depend on it way too much.

Today I hit wedges so much better than the last couple of weeks. Improvement seemed to come from a combination of taking extra club and trying to feel like I’m using my body, not my arms, to hit the shot. I guess today my pivot and arm swing were synchronized better - probably because I tried to be very slow and deliberate in transition.

Anyways, hope these updates help fellow golfers trying to dig it out of the dirt like I am.

Flat shoulder plane has plagued me, I can't get my shoulder turn steep enough.

Shoulders down and under...

Wedges = body pivot more than arm swing.

P.S. make sure you take this advice from me because I don't work on my game as hard as you do nor shoot the scores you do either LOL
