Anyone Carry an Umbrella For Shade

Recommended Posts

I'm not a fan of swinging clubs with the large Greg Norman style hats. For whatever reason, I feel it's invasive at the top of my swing. Anyhow, on hot sunny days I like escaping the sun with an umbrella but don't necessarily love the massive 62" options that most "golf" umbrellas come in. Anyone using something not quite so huge for shade purposes?

I wear a 2-3/4" brim Tilley hat AND use an umbrella for shade.

Like you, I'm looking for an option not quite as massive as the 62" to 68" ginormous golf umbrellas I've always used for that purpose. Actually the one I use now is very heavy and awkward because it's got a telescoping shaft that makes it 4" longer (shaft) than most umbrellas. That way I can stand upright under it when it's on my SpeedCart, a normal umbrella isn't quite tall enough mounted on the SpeedCart for a six-footer to stand without stooping over.

The best part about the umbrella (beside the coolness of the shade) is being able to walk under the umbrella with my hat taken off for a couple minutes at a time. Just a minute or two of the breeze on my head while standing in the shade is very refreshing. As far South as I live pulling the hat off my bald head while standing in the July sun is like instant sunburn!

I use a “sunbrella” from SunTek on my push cart. Silver on top, green on the inside. I wish it WAS bigger. So maybe it’s closer to the size you’re looking for.

Skin cancer is no joke. Staying cooler on the course is an added benefit.

Bagboy makes an extender that raises the height of the umbrella holder on pushcarts for easier walking underneath.

other companies may have a similar product. might be a way to use some PVC bits and adapt something.

I had a brief visit to Denver 10-15 years ago for a work conference. I loved the city and the blue skies and the spectacular vistas visible in the distance. And it was in late October so the air was crisp and dry with a nice breeze.

But walking around downtown for like 45 minutes in the sun I could almost feel the sun turning any exposed skin crispy. Maybe it was all in my head but it sure felt like I could actually sense the damage that high-altitude sun does to your body.

Yes, I use my umbrella for shade all the time. I have a ClicGear, so it's no issue having a large 68" umbrella.

It isn't in your head, the most severe sun burns, I have every gotten were at altitude. I have bought an UPF rated umbrella to use with my Clicgear, but, I haven't used it, since, I usually play in the mornings.

Years ago when I first started using an umbrella on hot days, one of the strangers I was playing with gave me grief when I put the umbrella on my pushcart. A few holes later I was on the teebox, and out of the corner of my eye I could see him slide over under my umbrella. I stopped, turned to him, and said, "It's $5 rental for the shade."

I lived in Santa Fe NM for 4 years. The sun is deceptively harsh at altitude and with the dry air, even at modest temperatures. I would burn in 30+ minutes without sunscreen. But the modest summer temperatures and dry air make it seem almost cool at 75-80 degrees, but it is just as dangerous as here in East Texas at 100 degrees.

Used to have a Clic - now Motocaddy - and use one all the time, still use the silver Clic umbrella. Stopped caring about "how it looks" a long time ago. You have enough friends deal with skin cancer and you'll come to not care too lol. If you're going to be walking around on a hot sunny day not having the sun on you at all is 100x better than the best sunscreen.

Just looked at the BagBoy extenders - I would love it if those worked as advertised but I wonder if they would be sturdy enough.

This is a very popular method used by Asian folks up here. Long sleeves, umbrella up, and wider hats.

Here in East Texas it is 95-100*+ for most of July and August. That makes playing golf in the afternoon a real struggle. I typically have my umbrella on my bag regardless - so if I get too hot I don't have a problem sticking it on the Clicgear and using it for shade. I have the extender as well as the adjustable umbrella sleeve, so it makes it so that I don't have to duck to get out from underneath it. I don't always use it, but I am not opposed if needed.

This time of year I can look around at any random moment on a busy Saturday or Sunday morning and see at least three or four umbrellas in use, either in my own group or other groups playing adjacent holes. Occasionally there will be like three of us in my group and two or three more on the group ahead of us and some more on a group in a parallel fairway. In those cases it can look rather sinister, like they are multiplying before your eyes!

I'm actually a little amazed that usage of the Tilley hats (or similar wide-brims but Tilley is the norm) reached a certain level of popularity and then peaked. Fifteen years ago there was myself and maybe three or four other regular players at my club who wore them. Then about a decade back, the number of us seemed to increase all of a sudden. It's now probably around 1/3 or so of the 40-and-up contingent. but that percentage has stayed constant now for quite a while.

As for the sun sleeves, that peaked later (almost nobody was wearing them five years ago) and at a much lower proportion. Probably one in twenty or so at my course. Interestingly, perhaps because of LPGA Tour exposure, the younger junior ladies golfers (high school age, give or take) do often wear sun sleeves. Never wide-brim hats, though.

Shelta or Titleist Aussie hat (I'm in the minority but see others that wear similar hats), sun sleeves (I'm the only one I've seen use them when I play) and the occasional use of the Ping umbrella on my clic gear for my afternoon rounds (a couple of other guys will put their umbrellas up too).
