Tiger with a new putter at Portrush

Recommended Posts

Portrush will be running at 10/11, maybe less. Could be a heavier putter for the week since the greens are slower. Quite a change up.

It sure doesn't hurt Scottys bottom line when it comes to churning out their mass production stuff to see Tiger generate some buzz on a new custom offering.

No wonder he's tinkering with it having to add that much lead tape. I assume the bottom has some as well.

He uses the lead tape to add weight to the putter. More mass behind the ball means that he doesn't have to swing as hard/long on slower greens. Using the lead tape allows his stroke to stay a consistent length for certain length putts. His stroke size for a 10 footer can be the same as it is at home if he adds some weight to it. I don't think that's exactly what he's going for, but it does make adjusting speed a bit easier.

Weird because in the past he has just put lead tape on the sole of his Scotty for the open. Seems like he is searching for something. I watched him spend 45 minutes hitting 4 ft putts and grinding on his stroke today

He's not in search mode struggling he's just trying to give himself the best chance possible and if that means fine tuning his putter (as another player might do with their driver, hybrid etc) then that's not having lack of confidence it's him trying to win the Open.

Exactly the same as when players swap 5 woods for 2 irons.

It does seem that Scotty might finally consider trying to monetize a retail release of retail designs.....the T22 and the protos above seem to signal that SC is finally going to do some of this...

Even if he released the exact SHAPE of Tiger's (without GSS), that thing would sell out in minutes. And, the time is now..... it's been discussed millions of times in here, but, the actual Tiger shape has NEVER been retail released. Aspects of his head, yes. ALL of the aspects in one head; never.

If the putters in the link, above, come to retail, game over.

Idk if you're familiar with the Torque Balanced Edel Putters that have adjustable weights, but it is suggested to use a heavier weight on a faster green. Instructions:

**Faster Greens - Heavier Weight

Slower Greens - Lighter Weight

Comes with:

3 Prong Wrench, Weights, Dispersion String and Durable Case

Choose Between:

6g & 21g

6g & 12g

12g & 21g

GUIDE:

Step 1 - Lay the provided string down on the green about 12 feet away on a fairly flat putting surface.

Step 2 - Roll a few putts and see where they end up in relation to the string. The first putt is truly your indicator on the green speed.

If you roll the putts short of the string; the greens that day are slower and you need to change to a lighter weight. This will speed up your stroke to hit it further.

If you roll the putts past the string; the greens are faster and you need to change to a heavier weight. This will slow down your stroke to hit it softer. **

Is this correct? or Is this theory more specific to Edel's TB putters?

agreed... how could you ever get a consistent feel for pace if you're changing the weights based on green speed of a given course/ day. Just ridiculous marketing to get you to buy a $100 weight kit I guess. Adjustable weight should be used solely for stroke tendencies and/or to get a desired feel.

Tiger has his reasons for doing everything that he does. I would still guess that it has to do with the Open greens being slower, or that it helps to get his glutes activated....

I'd add as much weight as possible to my putter on those greens over there too...would take me forever to get used to basically putting on fairways.

Switching head weight based on green is a terrible idea. This is probably why he tends to struggle on slower greens. He probably has to spend untold countless hours adjusting to the feel of a heavier head.

The heavier putters of today totally mess up the swing weight for me. I have to add a lot of counter weight to the butt end just to get the feeling adjusted back to what I'm used to.

It all makes sense just want to know what is correct. I’ve never said edel has all the answers but it’s just an opposing view to “heavier weight is for faster greens”.

Hope tiger goes low with whatever putter he uses

It’s always more enjoyed when TW is in contention on Sunday. It will be more interesting if it’s with a new putter...

Calling it now... he puts the new putter in the bag and wins with it.

Just watched round 3 of last year's Open. He putted well with the TM Ardmore putter in that round... looked like he was putting more "hit" into the putts to overcome slower greens... still coming up short badly on one or two holes in that round.

I'm guessing he just didn't like how the TM putters looked to his eye and wanted something as similar to the original as possible.
