1 or 2 iron recommendations

Looking for 1 or 2 iron recommendations that won’t break the budget. Swing speed is in low 100s so I think I have The speed and consistency. Never had luck with hybrids in the past. I’m looking for something that may have a little more distance than a 3 iron off the tee on those holes that are less forgiving. One possibility is the taylormade RSI 2 iron? Any other recs? Thanks!

I've dabbled in a few 2i's and I feel like it's not so much about club speed as it is can you seriously strike the center (or very close) on a consistent basis. There's a few DI's like the U65/85 that will launch the ball pretty high so IMO speed isn't as big of a factor as middling it because you will lose massive amounts of distance on thin/toe/heel strike.

Anyway, look into the above mentioned Srixon, also there's TMB, GAPR, Apex UT, P790... quite a long list if you don't mind using Google. As far as which is "best", that will be totally user preference. I felt the U65 was the best mixture of looks, speed, forgiveness and feel, with P790 next (although I have not hit TMB, and I know a lot of people here love it).

I have been effectively using T-MB 17* 2 iron since it was introduced. Now and again put my old Mizuno Pro 16* 1 iron in the bag to remind me those clubs require a good swing. Good luck with your choice.

I have one. It's not as good feeling as the 790 UDI or 790 3i or OG UDI. I haven't found the right shaft for it so I can't tell how it is compared to others. I'm putting a Catalyst 80 like my 790UDI in hopes of getting a better feel for it.

It depends on how much you value consistency over distance. And of course what your handicap is. I don’t have an official handicap but am regularly scoring in the 70s at my home club, at most 85 if I have a really bad day. And I tried a UDI #2 a couple of weeks ago and sold it a day later.

Will stick to my G400 #4 Iron at power spec 19*. Gives me 195y carry consistently with run out according to ground hardness. So far it beats G and G400 Crossovers, Cobra King Utlity and TM UDI #2 hands down.

Currently playing Mizuno mp h5 2 iron and I absolutely love it! Feels good, easy to hit high and low and can be found for a good price.

It might break the bank, but the G410 Crossover 2i is really nice. Only reason I don't have it is I already bought a new set this year and, if I did buy it, my wife would probably start questioning HER life choices... That said, I have a Mizuno FLI HI - it does pretty well. A little harder to hit than I'd like... #needmorepractice

... I have played quite a few including Exotics, Srixon and Wilson but the UDi TP 2 iron is still my favorite. When I played the P790's I put the 3 iron bent to 18* in my bag, but after several rounds I went back to the original UDi. The combination of distance and forgiveness is hard to beat.

Bought a TM UDI 2 Iron off someone on this site and am loving it. the tour preferred not the newer one.

have a hole with water 275 yards out on my home course and i am regularly 10-20 yards from the water off the tee depending on wind. was 2 yards out the other day. thats very close to my usual driver distance.

off the deck i'm about 60% success with it (less than 10 hits in games) but the misses have been relatively straight which i love. my hybrid misses are much more left.

All good suggestions, however when I was considering the merits of putting a driving iron in the bag I coughed up 15 bucks for a Dynacraft Driving iron head. It's 18 degrees, I bent it to 16 with no problem. It's a hollow head but it feels great. I put a cheap shaft I had laying around in it (actually an unlabeled prototype Oban) and honestly it was shockingly good. I still have it though it has been replaced by a PXG 18 degree gen 2. If the PXG is a 9/10 I'd say the Dynacraft is a solid 7. Considering the PXG is 500 bucks and you can get a fully built Dynacraft for maybe 50... That's pretty impressive and it's shockingly good. Biggest difference is that I can keep the PXG much lower when I want.

I played a TM TP UDI 1 Iron throughout high school and loved it; wasn't the easiest club to hit though (obviously). I now play a P790 UDI 2 Iron that is a degree weaker but goes consistently 5-10 yards longer because of the hybrid shaft. I also find the P790 more forgiving. I still play the TP UDI 3 Iron (old trusty) and love it; it won't be going anywhere until I replace my 716 AP2s down the line (optimally a full set of driving irons).

Both are awesome off the tee and I have hit both into par 5s. Would reccomend as I have no luck with hybrids.

Go old school, Wilson Staff Fg51 or even the older models. They have a slightly higher lofts than newer irons and can be had for very low prices, letting you play with different shafts and no big deal if you need to do some bending for lies or lofts. Got a set of fg51's and the 1 is relatively easy to hit, also a set of 1967 staffs which is just as easy. Shafts are precision rifles from waaaaay back. And did I mention they are cheap. But they are also soft as butter when you hit them sweet.

The clubs mentioned above will all be $ 150+ so if you want a lower cost option see below. I noted you didn't want to break the bank.

Hirekogolf.com. Prophet CB irons - 3 iron (really is a 2 iron at 17 degree loft); perimeter weighted, hardened, forged face for butter soft feel. The is the same metallurgy and construction used in many name brand clubs. I am a senior player, use these irons and hit this club 200 off grass - not bad for an old guy

Pair this with a FST 115 stiff, add a grip, have Hireko assemble the club and you are out the door in the $50 range. Reasonable price for a test club: you can always go name brand higher dollar later.

Cheap option is to get an M1/2 iron head and just reshaft. Picked one up a couple years ago for $40 with a C-taper in it. Don't play it as there are better options out there, but for chits and giggles...
