bending black wedges BE CAREFUL

Recommended Posts

Only the second time in 20yrs I broke a club and both were black wedges, this one was a taylor black, took zero pressure snapped like brittle . I have a Scotland loft and lie and have bent thousands, I should have researched , I don't charge and now I am out a young fellas wedge, costly free business, and yes I replaced it.

The MBs are only a black coating that come off. The new wedges etc are DBM the black is mixed into the metal. Makes it stronger but more brittle.

Ive had dbm type clubs ok to bend upto 2* and others snap at .5* for those reasons id never buy DBM

A club head that cant be adjusted on loft or lie is useless, and TM say they are made of 8620 Carbon steel, the most common for Wedges, and no warnings about "No bending", so this does not sound right at all. Have you tried a mail to TM about it?

Something is off, I have bent a lot of black TM wedges and never had an issue. Was it a fake maybe? Now the black Adams irons...now we have an issue.

I agree with the theory that something is off here.

The DBM is supposed to increase the surface harness but actually will enhance the adjustability of the carbon 1035 according to all the information.

I would also second guess that the wedge could be counterfeit. I hope you did not throw it away.

Contact the OEM to see if they want to exam it.

If the wedge is indeed a counterfeit, then you're off the hook for replacing it.

The boy might be a good kid, but whomever bought that wedge for him might not know to be cautious buying from the internet. If it's bought in a brick and mortar retail store, return it.

I recently had my Adams Pro Black MB's and CB1's bent 2* in both loft and lie with no issues. Not even any cracking of the finish.

A few times i tried to adjust a low priced no name PUTTER, it snaps almost only by thinking about adjusting it, so the idea of this being a counterfeit head sound as a possible answer for why it happen. Like Krt22 say above, if this is a surface treatment only, there is no reason for why the hosel itself should snap, it should have been cracks on the surface layers, but not all the way strait trough, unless it was so hard to bend that when it started to move, it could not be stopped, but it did not sound like much force was needed, so the counterfeit idea is the one i think is right.

I have bent hundreds if not thousands of clubs, I know what force is needed, this took nothing, most likely is the blackening or it was cracked .

Golfworks had a problem where a good many of the early DMB clubs where breaking while bending. There are threads about it in the archives.

I sold my buddy a set of the Maltby MMB Blacks that I built (with the DBM finish). The 7-iron snapped when he tried to have it bent a couple degrees. These were sold as sets only, so needless to say, he is bummed. The shop is hoping they can find him a matching head.

Heating won't do anything unless you heat to red hot.

Regarding you guys busting those Maltby's, my condolences. I'd be really bummed if a club busted. No way a forged club should do that bending 2 degrees. That blacking process must be seriously affecting the molecular structure of the metal.

Do you really believe the heat made a difference?

304 Stainless steel alloy retains 100% of its structural integrity at 870°C (1679°F), but at 1000°C (1832°F) it loses 50% of its tensile strength, so we need more than 870 C* on the hosel to make it softer for bending, simply forget it, heating of Golf club heads before bending is a MYTH, dont keep it alive with posts like this.
