I understand the idea of appreciating great shotmaking and performance of a player in an individual sport. I don't care what anyone does or who they root for, but I wonder why someone cares if a certain player wins. Especially if they don't have anything wagered on it, or they have no connection whatsoever to the player.

 

The player isn't going to give you some money. They aren't going to write a thank you note for being a fan.

 

It's like professional sports teams. They're businesses. The owners and players make gobs of money and you get to pay for their place of business, pay for tickets, pay for hot dogs and beer, pay for parking, but get nothing, nada, zip if they win.

 

Hoping NBA team A beats NBA team B is like hoping Delta Airlines makes more money than Southwest Airlines. Why do you care if you have no financial or personal interest in the company?

 

I'm seriously curious about people who are fanatical fans of a college football team, but they aren't alumni and no one in their family goes to the school or ever went to the school. I don't understand it.

 

If you have no connection to the player, why do you hope they win? Why would someone want Dustin Johnson to win? Now, hoping Tiger wins if he gets in contention would be interesting because of the historical relevance of it and the comeback story involved.

 

But to say, "Oh, I hope (insert player's name) wins the Open" is baffling to me.
