What wedges do you keep in your bag?

Back in the day when I played a traditional weak lofted blade set, I'd have a PW that matches the irons (around 47 loft), a 54 degree sand and 60 lob. The 54 acted as my all purpose gap wedge, which was also useful around greens for longer bunker shots and chips. Today with stronger lofted, higher powered clubs, I need an actual gap wedge (called "attack" with my set which matches the irons). From there not much different than years past expect I got a pair of wonderful JDM wedges where what used to be my 54 is slightly stronger, and what used to be 60 is slightly weaker. I honestly don't notice any difference and won't bother adjusting the lofts for fear messing with bounce and grind on these best wedges I ever had.

Vokey SM6 49.07 F, SM4 54.11M and 58.09 S. MOI matched and specs verified. 58 is actually about a 57.5; I had it bent from the 59 spec it arrived at. All with Steelfiber i80 (senior with some thumb arthritis). The SM4's are so soft and responsivet. I recently found these SM4 heads on eBay, virtually new (the 58 was still in plastic). I have a more worn 54.11M, 56.11M (bent to 55), and 60.07 S as needed later on!

I tried the SM6 54 and 58 in a couple of grinds but I'm not near as comfortable with them. I still have a steelfiber - shafted SM6 54 and 58 in the closet, but at this point no plans to putting then in play again.

I just need a 46 degree PW and my current 52 and 58 degree Vokeys. There’s a significant gap in loft compared to the difference between the rest of my clubs but I can put weight on my front foot and de-loft the 52 and 58 when necessary.

For about 14 years, I played a 50* PW, a 56* SW and a 60* LW which were stock with my components iron set. (high loft set)

When I switched to X20 irons in 2009, I added an AW to 45* PW and an early Callaway Forged 56* SW (2003 model).

Switched to X20 Tours, and went with set 46* PW, and Cle CG14 50 + 54 + 58.

Then... I decided to get the 48 + 54 +60 shown below. for last season of X20 Tours and first season of CB Pros. Three wedges is a lot easier for me to manage than four.

Srixon z785 PW 46°, RTX4 50°10 and 56°10, and taylormade hi-toe 60°. I use them all on full swings, I use the 56 for most partial swings inside 85 and mainly the 56 and 60 for chipping around the greens with the 50 being used for occasional bump and runs. The Hi-toe is my green side bunker play 95% of the time.

I absolutely love all of these wedges. If I were to change anything I’d space them out 50,54,58 due to my OCD but I really have no problems with my gapping as they are now and I like the 56’s trajectory on most chip shots.

This is why I keep gaps in loft. Adding a bit of weight really does make up for the difference.

I still play my X20s. I really enjoy their feel and they hadn't been played much before I got them as they were in almost new condition. I've played a number of Cleveland and Titleist sets in the past and I always end up going back to my X20's. The MD's have a great feel as well. I'm just a stubborn lad about my loyalty to Cleveland wedges (as you can tell by the name).

I've played MD4 54s and 58x for the past 2 years. RTX3 58/8 in and out during that time as well as an RTX3 54/10

Had a falling out with the 54* recently and have moved to RTX4 in both the 54 mid and 58 mid just this past month....so far so good. Just getting the hang of the heavier s400 shafts in the Clevelands

Set up is: 45* PW -110-115, 50* GW -100-105, 54* 85-90, 58* 70 yards.

58* mostly greenside shots rarely full.

If I were to play two wedges would be an approach wedge around 52 with some bounce, and a 60+ that I can open up and get pretty with. Right now I have raw sm6 vokeys

46_8 -- will go back to set PW as it seems to be better yardage for full swings

50_8 -- Fine for approaches,

56_12 -- generally play square, use bounce for normal chips and hack outs

60_4 -- never full swings, almost always open and for finesse shots around the green, opening adds a fair bit of bounce

Assuming the PW doesn't count...I'd play Callaway Mack Daddy 50 and 54....perfect yardage for me for full swing approaches and I chip (and pitch) mostly with the 50.

> > I used to do everything with my 56 & 60. I play blades with a PW @ 47. My wedges consist now consist of 50, 53, 56, 58. I been practicing a lot of short game in the last year or 2 and now use all my wedges. I mostly use my 50, 53 for bump and runs or inclines. my 56 is very versatile. I seldom use my 58 unless I'm playing very fast green and have little room to work with so essentially only certain courses. For my typical courses, I'm using a lot of 56 mixed in with 53 then 50 with almost no 58 usage. Now that I use less lofted wedges green side, I can play smaller swings and have less chance of blading across the green like I used to do a lot.

> > I don't carry a wood so I use that spot for an extra wedge. I play driver and 2 hybrid @ 18 degrees.

>

> Wow a 2hy is an interesting choice. I don't see that club talked about in many forums. I must imagine that your iron game is stellar if you have a gap between your 2hy and 4 iron with no woods between. I'm interested to try different wedges as I know my swing works great with them. My next purchase is probably going to be a 50. I try to keep a 4 degree loft difference between my wedges as I don't think the 2 degree difference affects my play enough to keep that deviation in my bag.

I hit my 2hy 18° about 225. I can choke down and dial it back to 200 from the fairway. I can tee it off about 225-240. I hit my 4hy @ 23° about 185 and 200 off the tee. I hit my brothers wood and realized its probably a 240+ club off the fairway and I've figured there's not much good trying those types of shots without much reliability. I look at the woods and just want to smash so its probably not the best choice for me. So I've concluded I'll have better results with a reliable 200- 225 club that I can keep straight. I've realized that attacking a pin from 225 out doesnt carry the highest probability so I vary the strategy depending on the layout.

For the past 20 years (or nearly so) I've preferred Vokey wedges with the stock DG shafts. They suit my eye, I like the weight and balance, it's what I've played more golf with than anything else by far. Nowadays they have tons of grinds to choose from but I usually stick to the boring old "Full" or similar grinds rather than the highly relieved ones.

But I have a hangup with my clubs that keeps sending the Vokeys to the closet for long spells. I like the weight of my irons and wedges to be more or less the same. Not swingweight but actual weight. Like 450 grams or whatever it is. For several years now I've been using irons with shafts in the 95-115g range, mostly right around 100g or so. And I just can't seem to find my tempo and feel when my PW and/or GW weigh 20-30g less than my SW and LW.

I either go through a period where I hit my iron solid but mishit too many (full swing) wedge shots or I'm just nailing the wedges but not making consistent impact with the 8, 9, PW from my iron set. Probably because I just play and seldom practice anything other than chipping and pitching.

So I just use the GW/SW/LW that are part of my iron set. Same shafts. The result is that sometimes I'm not totally in love with the way these wedge look behind the ball but I get used to it soon enough. And they can tend to feel a little light on short-game shots (sometimes I add 6-8g of lead tape to help that a little without messing up the full swing balance too much).

My current JPX 900 Hot Metal set has a 45-degree P then a 50-degree G then 55-degree and 60-degree S and L wedges to finish out the set. There are subtle differences in the shapes of the soles (basically a little more squared off in the PW trending toward slightly camber in the higher lofts) but they work good as basically a 10-iron/11-iron/12-iron/13-iron in my full swing. And I do practice the short-game shots enough that after a while I don't miss the Vokeys too much.

Taylormade Tour Preferred CB PW, AW, Cleveland 588 Gunmetal 56 and 60. Have played this setup since buying the Taylormade irons. The only thing I need to recheck is the lie on the 56 and 60. Last time out, full shots from the fairway with the 56 went left on me. The lie may be too upright. I primarily use the 56 for bunker shots. It has a 14 degree bounce. With all these new variations in bounce and grind, I'm wondering if I should change the 56 to a different bounce.
