Peter Oosterhuis update?

Does anybody know how Peter Oosterhuis is doing dealing with Alzheimer's these days? I tried a Google search but couldn't find anything more recent than about three years ago, at least nothing I could identify as more recent. I always liked him as a player & later as a broadcast personality, always thought he seemed to be one of the good guys. One of my best friends & long time playing companion since we were teenagers is dealing with this now.

The only certainty is he is pretty much doing a little worse with each passing month, would be very surprised if his family is putting much out in the public or his friends are talking about it in anything other than a supportive, but not too revealing way. He and his wife talked a little over a year ago about a drug trial program he was in that Jim Nantz was directly instrumental in getting him into. She was pretty candid at that time, he seemed pretty good when he was talking, but you aren't "you" 24 hours a day.

Simply insidious disease.

I have three friends who's wives are slowly being taken from them by dementia / Alzheimers. It's devastating to them. To see someone you have lived with and loved for 40+ years slowly become a stranger is a terrible row to hoe. If you live long enough I can guarantee that someone you know will go through this.

I feel bad for the man. Only announcer I could stand to listen to, and miss hearing his discussions. Hopefully, he is doing as well as possible.

My buddy has been relatively stable for the last couple of years. He sold his floor covering business & is essentially retired now. He is going to play with me next month in a four player best ball tournament. He organized our guys golf trip to Hilton Head that we take every February for more than 30 years, I took over the planning a couple of years ago. We are trying to keep his world from shrinking as much as we can, but I don't know how much longer he will be able to keep playing with us. We're going to bring him along with us as long as possible.

I own a healthcare company and we provide support for dementia and alzheimer's clients. In addition, we do the administration of several drugs that are in the trial phase for dementia and alzheimer's. If you haven't had your loved one see a senior physician (a very new and upcoming speciality) please do it. There are drugs currently available that can maintain the current condition or slow down the progression. One of the drugs is a cholinesterase inhibitor and we've seen positive results from it.

Also, there are a number of other clinical trial that are out there and you can get potentially have your loved one in the trial if they meet the requirements. [alz.org](alz.org "alz.org") is a site where you can research the various trials out there.

There are other non-medical thing you can do to assist your loved ones. One is to keep them moving. Physical movement helps keep the blood flowing and it also tires seniors out which assists with sleep and sleep is important and sometimes difficult in seniors. Another is to have a book of photos to go through with them. Ask them to share the stories of the people in the pics, where the pics were taken and tell you as much as they remember. Final thought...music is wonderful to calm moments of agitation. That Sinatra song will take usually invoke a very positive memory.

Or "Secret Love" - Doris Day in my mom's situation.

So much in such a relatively short post. Awesome.

nope ... people put off "trips" or whatever because they'll "do it later" ... whether it's yourself or someone you want to travel with, you don't know what the future holds ... my brotherinlaw died two summers ago from a massive heart attack at 62 yo ... all set to retire with his wife and live those "golden years" ... and he was a damn good man ... that's when i started planning some serious trips instead of worrying about who could go or how much it costs (to some extent) ... whatever the disease, whatever the condition, you don't know when it'll strike ... so make the trip ... even if you're only 30 ...

I was somewhat confused myself. “make the trip over”? Should I interpret literally or figuratively. Where am I going? Put myself in the shoes of others?

So true though. When our mission is complete he brings us home. Make the most of it, now.

This is so true. I just lost my older brother who was special needs on July 3. His health had been declining for the last two and a half years, but he died suddenly after throwing up in his sleep and aspirating. I was his guardian (our parents died in 2000 & 2002) & I'm having a difficult time right now.

I’m sorry for your loss. I lost my wife to Alzheimer’s a couple months ago. Was a long journey. I have some understanding how these diseases fill your life while trying to make your loved one comfortable and help manage their journey with some positive outlook. I always admired Peter for his insight and succinct style. Would love to meet him, but who am I? You will cherish your memories, nothing can bring our loved ones back, but you have a life to live, you’re stronger for the love you have given.
