Measuring for shaft length & lie - what to choose?

JD3

Recommended Posts

I come out "standard" at 5'9" and 35" wrist to floor measurement.

But standard lie looks upright to me, by anywhere from 1.5-2.0 degrees.

Standard length (irons) seem about 1/4" too short to me.

What to go with? Measurements or what looks and feels good to me?

What you see and feel is a big factor. And should be always the swing vote in the end. That being said...when it comes to lie angle looks can be deceiving. Hit some shots with different lie angled demos to see what creates the best contact pattern. Length and lie work in unison. 1/4” on an iron is a lot, doesn’t sound like much but it affects overall weight and sw. Once again try to hit some demos or extend your current 8 iron to use as a test club if your current clubs are standard. Live testing gives you feedback if what you see and feel creates the best contact and ball flight. Those two factors rarely lie to us. If contact is consistent and ball flight is good and it feels right to you, it is. The only way to know is to try it though.

Quick note too...I’ve noticed in shorter players, not as much in players over 6 ft.

You may need short irons that are flatter and as the clubs get longer they blend to standard depending on the length you go with.

We should use tools in the works shop to quantify the specs that worked the best, we should not let club spec numbers lead us during fitting, we should go by "more or less" or "too little or too much" until we have found what works, then we quantify those specs, and duplicate them from the fitting club to the one you shall play.

We can play around with numbers pre-fitting to see some options we like to try out, and to see what limitation or possible issues there might be for a certain set up, but dont let this number lead you to much, we humans are not compatible with numbers, so do the fitting using "The Human Scale", and when done, quantify what works the best with Club maker tools.

Way to many club fitters has their focus on the tools, NOT the player, and its the player we does the fitting on, NOT the tool, we can never please a Trackman so dont even try it, let it help to find whats the best for the player.

It does not help much if numbers looks good on a few shots, and the player was swinging out of his shoes to make it, so the fitter shall pay close attention to THE PLAYER and how he respond to club specs, what happens to his stance, his swing, his timing and float, and as a sum of all them, his club speed and impact...

So look at the player, we can see it on him if it dont work for him, or if he need to compensate for the better or worse, since all club specs FORCES the player to make something different, the clubs dont change, so we have to change or adjust to make Club and Player as a team to work.

Go by how it feels and works, then quantify that club when it works like you want it.

Club fitting is like buying shoes, we might know what shoe # we have on now, but all brands is a bit different in both wide and length, so "10" is not always "10" in another brand or shoe model, so DONT go by the numbers, go by what fits the best, be it higher and lower number values then what you are used to, or though would be right. Is US who is the fitting object, it shall fit us, not a chart or a piece of paper.

Yes I've noticed the same....sometimes I've had wedges bent almost as much as 3 flat, whereas long irons only 1. What I find that makes me a little different in wanting 1/4" longer is that I tend to stand a little straighter at address....don't like feeling of being bent too much from waist. Which is another reason a flatter lie angle is needed for longer club.

Two words for you. Keegan Bradley

Go figure that out but that’s his stance and his posture. Your stance preference and comfort is a huge factor. If your setup feels good to you and isn’t causing you major issues than the club should fit that length and lie working together to get it right. My opinion, you are on the right track thoughtwise in what you are wanting to do but I would do a little trial and error before you take the plunge on either new or a rebuild of an existing set
