Golf Ball for 10 Handicap with High Swing Speed

I'm looking for a new golf ball that fits my game and I am having trouble making sense of what's on the internet. I'm a 10 handicapper with a high swing speed (between 290-310 off the driver, 7 iron about 180-185) In addition to hitting the ball pretty far, I also hit the ball very high. Whenever I read about a ball on the internet it seems to be for either elite players, or for players who need more distance and help getting the ball in the air. Is there a ball out there that's good for average players with high swing speeds? To be clear the characteristics I am looking for in a ball are lower launch and controllability off the driver. One of the reasons I am a 10 is because I hit 2-4 drives a round that go wayward on me. Ideally it wouldn't be hard as a rock either, but I could make some sacrifices in feel. I am also willing to sacrifice distance and spin rates, because I never have a problem with distance or stopping the ball on the green. Price is also not a factor.

Couple things here, a ball will not make much difference off the driver as far as launch and spin is concerned, you will have better results adjusting your driver setup. High with the driver is not necessarily a problem. High and flat is great. A ballooning high ball is not desired. At a 10 handicap, i feel you could play as “elite” as a ball that you can afford. This is up to you. How many balls do you lose a round and is it worth the money. Performance wise you will like the premium balls. If your a high spin player i would first look at the titlesist avx and perhaps the tp5x. Im a high launch high spin guy too, with same distances you describe, only difference being im scratch. I play a tp5x mainly because of all the premium balls out there, it spins the less. Only one that would spin less is the avx. But it is too soft for my liking.

The range in ball performance within the urethane cover category doesn't amount to much. Feel is the biggest difference between them, not performance. The USGA sets ball limits on distance and speed and pretty much every ball on the market is made to max out to the requirements. That said, if price is no object just pick up some Pro V1X's and be done with it. They are overpriced as heck but if you don't care they are the safe bet.

I'm not sure it's elite players vs. distance/getting the ball in the air. There's basically a) urethane balls that spin more around the greens / on partial wedge shots (and maybe marginally more on full iron shots), b) surlyn balls that are lower compression / feel soft (some of these are targeted towards slower swing speeds although it's unclear to me if it really matters), and c) surlyn flying rocks that are either lowest cost possible and/or absolute maximum distance. Group a) tends to be associated with elite players (unlikely there are any pros playing a ball from the other groups) but there are also plenty of people here shooting bogey golf that insist they need a urethane ball or their game would be in shambles.

I'm not sure what to say on your desired characteristics. You can find a ball that flies somewhat lower (ProV1 is one) but I'm not sure that is any more controllable than others. Most balls are spinning similarly off the driver. Some of the flying rock may be marginally lower (a few hundred rpms) but I think some of these are also meant to fly higher.

Truthfully, I'm not sure anything is really going to matter much. I've been bouncing around between 8 and 10 index, and could play just about anything you give me with little impact on score. I certainly have preferences but give me 2 dozen of anything to play for several rounds in a row and I'll figure it out.

What do you play now? Maybe try a box of something on the other end of the spectrum and see if one seems any better or worse. Maybe others will have more helpful suggestions.

I'm a 10 handicap who's a bit behind you in the distance department, but for what it's worth try out the Bridgestone Tour BX? I find it to be decently decent. (Lower flight and lots of roll-out). But then again I find and play a lot of Z-stars, and proV's, and chrome softs... with the exception of not being able to putt a chrome soft, they all seem about the same. I just have brand loyalty to Bridgestone.

Snell blacks are what I settled on... similar game setup, but I’m down to a 6 from starting at an 11 this summer (I got laid off, so I’ve been playing a ton).

I’d also look at your ball striking and make sure you aren’t hitting up on your irons. I’ve significantly lowered my ball flight with a minor tweak to

My swing.

I definitely flip my irons through impact so that's the primary source of my high ball flight. That being said a little extra help from the equipment wouldn't hurt.

I've been playing the AVX, primarily because it is the only premium ball marketed as lower flight. I switched from a bridgestone E series last year when a pro told me part of the reason I hit the ball so high was my ball and the difference was noticeable. Like Red4282 I like the flight of the AVX, but it is a little weird feeling, probably because it is so soft. Maybe I'll try the TP5x.

Well the tp5x feel is great and also good if your putting too much spin in the ball, especially short irons. Now it is supposed to be a higher launching ball, but like i said for me its been high and flat(peak height isnt much different but initial launch is) which i like quite much.
