Yes I have. It’s no pushover but I still slightly prefer Old Homestead for bone-in rib.

Yes, please let us know where you played and ate and what you thought. A few tips on playing Bethpage Black:

1- I don't know how good you are but if you are a 10+ handicap then don't think about your score or have a score in mind. Accept that the Black will beat you up at some points during the round.

2- If you are in the rough and 180+ from the green, don't try to be a hero and go for it. Take an iron, make sure you get down the fairway, and set up position to take a wedge or short iron into the green. The length, rough, and protected greens will bite you if you go for the glory shots. BUT, the greens are not crazy and if you set up position you will have chances to save par or take a good bogie and move on to the next hole.

3- The course warms you up on the first three holes, and then the beast comes out on 4 and pretty much stays that way until 18. On 4, the triple elevation par-5, on your second shot don't go straight at the green, even for your lay-up. Play right of the greenside bunkers for a much easier approach to get a GIR and hold the green.

4- On 8, take enough club. Don't be fooled that it is downhill. Anything hitting the front of the green is in danger of rolling into the pond.

5- Consider 3-wood on 2, 6, and 18. On 6, if you don't thread the needle down the middle, you can drive into the right bunker or left into the rough past the left bunker. BUT, if you hit driver and hit the right spot you can carry the ridge and get a big boost forward.

6- The par-5s can he had if you keep it in play off the tee and set up your third shots with wedges or short irons.

7- On 5, don't cut the fairway bunker too much, you can easily drive it over the fairway if you are too far left.

8- The burgers at the clubhouse bar are great.

Good luck!

I'm local. Bethpage Black is the course to play-try to do it during the week, and keep an eye on the website--people drop their times day before and day of--I got on at 2 PM with a same-day website check.

If you can't get on the Black, you should be able to play the Red. Lots of times on the board for that, typically.

My weekly track is Skyway Golf Course. It's a little pricey for only 9, but it's an excellent course--slope is 142 from the tips, course rating is 35.7 (9 holes). It's extremely walkable, and you get excellent views of the WTC/Lower Manhattan. It's also the closest course to Manhattan--hop the PATH to JC or Hoboken, and then it's a $10 uber.

I'd put Galloping Hill next. It's got a lot of elevation change, thought it's not Bethpage. Prices are reasonable, and it's a challenge and very scenic. :)

I've heard great things about Hominy Hill and Neshanic Valley, but I haven't gotten out there.

If I didn't want to travel so far out from NYC, I'd probably try to get on as much as possible at Bethpage State Park, and toss on Skyway if I wanted to have a shorter day/do stuff in the city.

Food-wise, here's what I would hit:

1) Julianna's--Best Pizza in NYC, get there via a scenic walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Chocolate egg cream is also excellent.

2) Katz's Deli--get the pastrami sandwich. It's unreal.

3) Joe's Pizza (West Village)--go for the fresh mozzarella slice. Best slice in NYC, and my #2 pizza in the city.

4) Old Homestead--my favorite steakhouse. Dry-Aged Porterhouse for 2 is the way to go, if you can split it with someone.

5) Totto Ramen--best ramen in the city. East side location is easier to get into.

6) Barney Greengrass / Russ & Daughters -- best spots for lox/smoked salmon in the city. Russ & Daughters is more upscale, Barney Greengrass is more classic deli/old NYC. Barney Greengrass is also the place to go if you've never had sturgeon.

7) Absolute Bagels -- best bagel in the city. A bit of a hike uptown, but worth it. Can pair well with Barney Greengrass if you're already in the Upper West Side.

Thanks everybody for the tips and insight. I've had a slight change of plans and will probably only be there for 5 or 6 days now, so will likely cut out the NJ options. Will for sure play Bethpage Black and Red during the week and I'll look into some of the others you guys have mentioned. I figure even if I only end up hitting those two it will have made the trip.

I'll make sure to do a quick recap when I return!

Thanks also for the food tips!

Totally. If you need to keep it close to NYC, don't sleep on Skyway. Especially during the week--it'll be pretty empty and you get really great views.
