Atlanta Area Course Review and Conditions

Recommended Posts

Chicopee Woods is in great shape. All the green replacements have been completed and they are much harder/faster greens now which I like. This is where I play the most.

I just played Reunion last weekend and it was in great shape as well.

Riverpines is also in very good shape currently. It's layout is okay however it's one of the few courses that I walk as it's somewhat flat except for a couple holes.

I stopped playing TC of Appalachee earlier this year due to it's condition back then. Fairways had a lot of dirt spots and water run-off ditches. I've always enjoyed it's layout though so hopefully they have it back together now. I'll have to try it one more time.

Wanted to add and check if anyone has played the Lanier Course in Cumming lately. This used to be one of my favorite tracks but they went through some financial issues (sell or not sell). I played it about 5 months ago and the greens were good however the fairways were looking pretty bad.

Chicopee Woods is in REALLY good shape. It's definitely a hike but it's worth it.

Darius,

Check out Reunion in Braselton. Might be a little far, but GREAT course. Really tight layout and some really tough holes. Extremely well maintained.

thanks audio. yeah, people seem to have gotten a decent amount of use out of this thread. i'm in virginia-highland in atl, so usually stay closer to the city, but i'm up for a long haul every now and then. thanks for the info, it's always nice to know that a course is worth the trip before making the trip, haha.

I agree with the comments about Reunion, you get to use all of your clubs. It not just a bomb it off the tee on all the holes course. Also Chicopee Woods has 27 holes of great golf, especially the greens, which are the new Champion Bermuda. The Pro Staff is really friendly with a excellent Hamburger at the Grill. Another course that is allowing some outside play is Summit Chase in Snellville. I would highly recommend all 3 of these courses and they can be booked on GolfNow.com at pretty good rates.

i played the frog on 5/9. fairways were a bit spotty, but nice enough. the greens were perfect. firm and fast. overall i really liked the course. it seemed like a couple of the pins had been placed by non-golfers (i.e. in ridiculous spots on top of ridges, etc.). all were legal pin placements, but 2-3 were absurd.

it was not crowded and we finished the round in 4:15. the carts have really good GPS screen and software. you can touch the screen to get distances to any point on the hole.

i will definitely go back.

I think I have just found my new favorite public layout in the metro Atlanta area (if Braselton is considered that)...

REUNION

From tee to green, the conditions were excellent. The bent greens were in almost perfect condition - which is amazing to find these days in GA. As the summer progresses, I wonder how well they will hold up. For the most part, the course is in front of you. The 'blind' shots are predictable and really not unfair. There wasn't a 'goofy' hole to be found. Wide fairways, pleasing layout, super cute cart assistance and great clubhouse food and staff made for a great day.

I've got a 4some for Barnsley Gardens I bought at a charity event that's good M-Thurs till Sept 13th if any of you are interested in it. I'm not going to have time to use it (bought it last sept for me and some guys at work to go play then I got a new job and we're on different off days). Or if 3 of you want to go play one day I'm sure I'd have an off day sometime between now and sept I could make work, but not positive. We could split it for what I paid for it. It's a nice Fazio design I've played about 50 times. They just aerated again a week ago though as an FYI. Fast greens and a challenging layout.

played bear's best last sunday (2/28). fairways are overseeded and in solid shape, not great, kinda soft and sticky (due to overseeding) but they look good. greens are very nice, champion bermuda (or something similar) fast and very firm. i was having 9-irons and PWs pitch forward 20-30 feet.

overall the course was in great shape and my buddy got a deal for $49. can't remember what site he got it on but it wasn't golfnow.

Bear's Best changed to bermuda greens?

they haven't changed in the last 5 years. i'm not sure it's champ bermuda, but it's not bent. some sort of high-end bermuda i believe.

i played bradshaw farms yesterday. an annoying number of the holes were less than driver off the tee. that aside, the design was challenging and the conditions were solid. greens are super fast and firm (similar to bear's best, some sort of high-end bermuda). fairways were generally solid, rough was low, a couple tee boxes were sandy but nothing that had an impact. bunkers are redish and a little light on sand, but playable.

they just sanded some of the greens on the red course, we played blue/white.

It's going to be interesting to see what happens to the OTP American Golf courses, like Bradshaw, if they lose their lease with the ITP courses. The contract is up at the end of the month and the city has yet to sign the 3 month extension. Even so, American Golf thinks they're outta there after July anyways. Don't expect them to spend any maintenance money on North Fulton, Bobby Jones, Brown's Mill, or Tup Holmes if their lease contract is not renewed.

Rumor is that the city wants a management company to come in like Mosaic rather than leasing it out to American Golf again. A management company would create the potential for the city to make more money than in a leasing situation but it would also require the city to come out of pocket a great deal in the beginning. I still also believe that they are preparing to turn the highlands of the Bobby Jones back nine holes into condos and multi-family, thus creating only a nine hole course in the flood plain. That would make the most since for their land swap with the Underground developers.

wolf creek (7/30/16) - greens were suuuupppper slow, very soft, but rolled true. fairways were in decent shape, rough was long and lush. overall in decent shape although i probably won't go back until it gets a little cooler and they start cutting the greens a shorter.

bradshaw farms (8/3/16) - greens were punched two weeks ago, recovering nicely but still a little bumpy and sandy in spots. fairways were in very good shape. overall very well worth the $26 super twilight rate (after 4pm).

Played Bears best on 7/29. greens were in pretty good shape and rolled fast and true. They had the fans going on the greens due to the heat.

Played Chicopee Woods 8/3 (Miil/School) and the whole course was in great shape. I love their new greens, very fast and you can drop a wedge shot into them and barely leave a ball mark.

The Frog is in great shape. Played it a week ago. If you’re going to drive that far from Decatur, head to Echelon. Cobblestone is also in the best shape I’ve seen in years.
