Ella's journey

Recommended Posts

Ella and I just finished week 2 of the SuperSpeed training. We both hit our longest drives ever today! She has a new driver on the way (Ping Prodi G). She did some medicine ball training and exercises from JoeyDgolf on IG as well as a GG. She is worn out and I am so proud of her effort. I think the new driver will be a much better fit for her so possibly a big jump in distance coming!

Good job to both of you.

Keep going!!!!

Wonderful to read about this - sounds like she has some real passion for golf and the right drive and frame of mind to develop her game and keep improving. What a wonderful thing that you and she can share. I relish the time that I get to spend with my 13yr old son on the course or practice area.

One thing that I wanted to mention is that I think that you will see as much or more improvement in her distance through improving the technique of her swing and hitting the sweet spot more frequently with the right swing and launch angle than with building strength and swing speed. It’s always been my impression (albeit a novice impression) that time spent building speed and strength show the most benefit once the swing technique is sound. As my son grew and improved, at each stage when it came to distance, the greatest improvements came through improvement in technique first and then size/strength. Of course there is no issue in working both sides at the same time just that expectations on which side will produce more/earlier results should be balanced.

Rich...huge fan of you and Ella! In addition to the distance gains, the consistency in her swing from week to week with a different length driver is outstanding. Thanks for the vids and the best to you and Ella!

Thanks so much!! We are really bonding over the experience. We took some online lessons with Dan and she is working on the changes. Her 7 iron is just night and day straighter! Its going great! We are going to work our butts off this week and hopefully it shows on saturday

Rich, liking the speed you have with the driver.

Thought I would give you an update. Ella is doing great! She shoots mid 50's and is very close to breaking into the 40's. Having a lot of fun with the game and growing like a weed! It seems like she gains distance every time we play. She has to make 10 3-4'ers in a row before we do anything else. She is a better putter than me inside 5'. She is driving the ball 150-170 now and her 7i carry is 100 yards. We have worked hard on all the aspects of her game and she just keeps improving. A new girl joined our club and she plays in a ton of tournaments. I am meeting with her parents next week and will get Ella signed up in a few with this girl. Its been such a fun year so far doing this with her.

Ella played in her first PGA Future tour event last week. This was her first non scramble tournament. She shot a 53 and took 2nd! My wife sent me texts all day with updates and I was a nervous wreck. Two nights ago we played 9 holes. She was like a different person. It finally looked like she felt comfortable on the course. Almost like she belonged there. That 2nd gave her a nice boost of confidence. She shot a 52 that night on our toughest nine and that's her current low score. 40's are coming but we don't talk about score goals but when she breaks 50, I am ordering her a custom Scotty. She wanted to play another tournament so we signed her up for on next week. Her drive has increased and she spends a good amount of time every day chipping in the back yard onto towels at different yardages. She then goes to the course to play/practice in the evening.

Progress is progress! Keep up the great work Rich.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

That's AWESOME Rich...congrats to Ella and her team. Have you started working with her on course management skills?

We have spent a TON of time on course management. She is making very good decisions on the course. She is growing like a weed and seemingly gets longer every time we play. Her drives are around 180 now and she is reaching shorter par 4's in 2. She does not miss from inside 4' and if the rest of her short game was as strong as her short putts she would be mid 40's. Working hard on chipping and lag putts now. We really eliminated her low hanging fruit. The plan is to work hard on raw distance early winter then refine it before spring. I also think her clubs are holding her back some as she has grown so much.

Also in case I have not mentioned it, she only plays from the women's tees now. (5200 yds)

She is at the point where she can play on the course comfortably without holding up the groups behind us. She has a friend that lives on the golf course so they will be playing more now. My guess is that will accelerate her improvement.

Here is a video of her in the tournament last week:

> Holy Cow Rich...she really has grown! How tall is Ella now? 180 yards is nothing to sneeze at and if she keeps on the pace 200 yards off the tee will be in the rearview mirror soon.

She is about 5'4" but still growing fast. She has grown probably 6" since this post started. My wife is 5'7" and I think Ella will be at least that. My guess is that she will be 210-220 yards off the tee next spring. She is starting to use her legs more for power and like I said, her driver is too small so that will help as well.

You need to assess her upper body strength. In Girl's and young boy's that is the number one factor in how far they can hit the ball.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.
